And don’t even think about that Sawyer girl…

Boone Cross was raised with three simple rules, and falling for Josie Sawyer broke every one of them. That is, until a year ago, when he did the unthinkable and she moved away.

Josie Sawyer never thought she’d be on a plane, flying back to Arkansas for the summer, only a year after her heart was crushed into a thousand pieces by the boy her parents forbade her to love. But her father is dying, and being stubborn isn’t an option.

In a town this small, it’s only a matter of time before she runs into Boone Cross.

A lot’s changed since she last laid eyes on him, but some things have remained exactly the same. Boone’s got designs on her and he won’t give up until he gets what he wants.

But as they give in to the need to be together once more, secrets come to light revealing a history of a hatred between their families that runs so deep that even the strongest love may not be able to survive.

Something tickled my feet, but I was too tired to move. I had stayed up most of the night, crying into my pillow. Once I realized I wasn’t going to sleep anytime soon, I packed my suitcase. I’d only fallen asleep three hours before.

“Josie,” someone whispered.

I knew by the smell of cigarettes and that raspy voice that it was Samantha. Opening one eye, I stretched my arms above my head. Samantha’s face was coated in glitter from brow to chin. Her belly shirt and go-go boots told me she’d just gotten in. Go-go dancing wasn’t her first choice to pay the bills, but neither of us complained when those tips started rolling in.

She threw her purple wig to the floor, revealing a nest of brown curls. “What the—” she said, picking up one of the wads of Kleenex that littered my bed. “Is something wrong with my Sookie?”

I sat up straight, feeling my puffy eyes with the tips of my fingers. “Yes,” I said, looking into her eyes for the first time. Bags hung underneath each painted eye, and her frown told me I looked as bad as I felt. “I’m going home. My mom called.”

Samantha arched a brow. She knew the relationship between my mother and me was rocky.

“My dad is dying,” I choked out.

Samantha’s arms flew around me. “I’m so sorry, Sookie. Are you okay? God, that’s a stupid question. When are you leaving? Do you need me for anything?”

I relaxed into her arms. I couldn’t have asked for a better friend. When I moved from Arkansas to California, I was as lost as a damn goose trying to get around. But then I met Samantha in freshman calculus. She took me under her wing and, three weeks later, rented me the empty bedroom in her apartment. We’d been best friends ever since. “I’m leavin’ at two. I just need a ride to the airport.”

She nodded against the crown of my head. “I can do that. In the meantime, how about some pancakes?”

I pulled away. The thought of eating made my stomach turn but I couldn’t say no to that hopeful face. “Pancakes sound nice.”

Fifteen minutes later, after I called the diner and told them I had to take some time off, we sat at our small kitchen table eating buttery pancakes.

“How long are you going to be gone?” she asked. She’d taken off her makeup and looked like an actual person now. Her high cheekbones and full lips were bare, and she’d never looked prettier. She was one of those girls who didn’t have to try to be gorgeous—she just was.

I shrugged, pushing the pancakes around on my plate. “They said he has a month. So I guess I’ll be gone a month.”

Sam’s frown deepened. “Sweetheart, I’m so sorry. So, so sorry. I can’t believe this is happening to you.” She kept her eyes on mine and I could see she wanted to ask something else.

“Go ahead and ask.”

The corner of her lip rose into a small smile. “I know you have to go, of course, but wasn’t there a reason you hadn’t gone back in the first place? I mean, you never really told me why you didn’t want to go home.”

More pain assaulted my chest, and it took everything in me not to burst into tears. I hated feeling so weak and helpless, but the memories were dancing at the corners of my vision, taunting me.

And all because of him. Because I’d fallen in love with a person that unlovable. Heartless. That’s the only reason I could think of why he would leave me. Alone. He’d been my anchor for an entire year. I’d spent a year in the woods, each night letting him hold me in that deserted treehouse of his.

Until one day—he vanished. Not literally, but emotionally. All those memories, stories, kisses—his touch. Those eyes. Everything had vanished from my life without as much as a goodbye. And as many times as I’d lain there, waiting for him to come back, he never did.

“It’s a long boring story, Sam. You don’t want to hear it.”

Genres: Superhero Romance

Everyone needs a hero.

That’s what Detective Molly Masters tells me. “What we need,” she says, “what the whole world needs,” she pleads, “is a champion.”

The only thing I want to talk about with Molly Masters is how I’d like to make her scream my name when I push her up against a wall, slide my hand up her thigh, and live out my wildest fantasies.

“Someone who will fight against injustice,” she says.

I’ll fight against anything you want, honey. Just come a little closer.

“Someone who will stand tall in the face of adversity,” she says.

I’ll do it standing, sitting, or lying down. See how easy I am?

“Someone who believes in the value of a good deed,” she says.

I believe in the value of me, sweetheart. Because I’m Lincoln Wade. Jaded genius, obscenely wealthy, capable of violence, and looking for revenge.

Molly Masters might have delusions of grandeur. She might see me as some superman capable of cleaning up the scum, filth, and corruption in Cathedral City.

But I’m not the hero she’s looking for.

I’m the dark alley where all her good intentions hide.

New Release Book Review: Corrupt by Penelope Douglas

Title:  Corrupt

Series: standalone

Author: Penelope Douglas

Publication Date: 11/15/2015

Genre:  Dark Romance

Rating:  5/5 stars

Where to buy:

Synopsis:   From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes a new dark romance…

I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.

His name is Michael Crist.

My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He’s handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.

But I noticed him.

I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away.

Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.

Because he’s finally noticed me.

Her name is Erika Fane, but everyone calls her Rika.

My brother’s girlfriend grew up hanging around my house and is always at our dinner table. She looks down when I enter a room and stills when I am close. I can always feel the fear rolling off of her, and while I haven’t had her body, I know that I have her mind. That’s all I really want anyway.

Until my brother leaves for the military, and I find Rika alone at college.

In my city.

The opportunity is too good to be true, as well as the timing. Because you see, three years ago she put a few of my high school friends in prison, and now they’re out.

We’ve waited. We’ve been patient. And now every last one of her nightmares will come true.

*Corrupt is a STANDALONE dark romance with no cliffhanger. It is suitable for ages 18+.

Review:  Penelope Douglas does dark romance like no other.  The author of the Fall Away series (Bully, Rival, Until You, Falling Away, and Aflame – if you haven’t read them, go do it…NOW…I’m serious!  Get your hands on those books…well, after you read this one.)

Corrupt is a dark romance…seriously, dark.  But oh, so good!!  Rika has secretly loved Michael for years, but was pushed together with his brother instead.  Michael shows no interest in Rika, until one night he takes her along with him and his friends for a night of mischief.  Michael and his friends are the town’s golden boys, practically untouchable.  Rika jumps at the chance, but things go badly.  Things happen (I can’t tell you what because I don’t want to spoil the mystery).  Three years pass and the boys return for revenge…on Rika.  What develops is a mysterious story of love, hate, misplaced blame and revenge…lots and lots of revenge.  Oh, and there is a deep, dark, forbidden romance, because it wouldn’t be a Penelope Douglas novel without a bit of dark romance and angry sex.

Warning…this is not a sweet, romantic book.  There are dark themes, borderline behavior and some steamy sex scenes.  I would not recommend this book for anyone under 18.

Book Review: Better When He’s Brave by Jay Crownover

Title:  Better When He’s Brave

Series: Welcome to the Point # 3

Author: Jay Crownover

Publication Date:  August 11, 2015

Genre:  Contemporary Romance, Romantic Suspense

Pages:  352 pages

Rating:  4/5 stars

Synopsis:  In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jay Crownover’s third novel in her sexy, thrilling Welcome to the Point series, a woman’s search for repentance leads her to the one man from her past she can’t forget as they join forces to save their city—and the explosive love neither can live without.

Titus King has always seen his world in black and white. There is a firm right and wrong in his mind, which is why as a teenager he left behind the only family he’d ever known to make a better life for himself. Now a police detective in one of the worst cities in the country, he can’t deny his life has turned into a million different shades of gray.

The new criminal element in The Point has brought vengeance and destruction right to Titus’s front door, and walking the straight and narrow seems far less important now. The difference between right and wrong is nothing compared to keeping those he loves alive. To add to his already strained moral compass, the beautiful and mysterious Reeve Black has made her way back to town. This girl might be as dangerous to Titus as the guy trying to destroy the Point but he can’t walk away because he needs her—in more ways than one.

Reeve knows all about the threat trying to destroy The Point. She knows how ruthless, how vicious, and how cruel this new danger can be… and instead of running away, she wants to help. Reeve knows that she has a lot to repent for and saving the city, plus the hot cop that she hasn’t been able to forget might just be the only way she can finally find some inner peace.

With an entire city poised on the brink of war, Titus and Reeve stand in the crossfire—and it will take two brave souls to fight for the ultimate love.

Review:   I like the Welcome to the Point series better than the Marked Men series.  There.  I said it.  So shoot me.  😉

I have now read all three books and I can’t wait for more.  I REALLY want Booker’s story.

Better When He’s Brave is Titus’s story.  Titus the mostly straight arrow cop who tries his darndest to keep the people of the point safe from all the big bad.  His brother, Bax, and Bax’s friend, Race, are part of the big bad, but they are also family and have this sort of agreement with Titus.  However, someone is threatening Titus and more importantly, the girl Titus cares about, Reeve.

There is a lot of threatening.  A lot of I want you but I don’t.  Even more I want you, so why don’t you want me.  A few murder attempts, some bodily harm and a lot of serious danger.  Of course, there is the romance between Titus and Reeve to tie it all together.  Titus and Reeve are my favorite of all the couples in the Welcome to the Point series.  I think it’s because Titus is more real that Race and Bax and his reactions are more real.

Better When He’s Brave is the best of the series and keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Synopsis:       A sexy category romance from Entangled’s Brazen imprint…

Playing dirty can be the best kind of fun…

Chloe Franklin wouldn’t call herself a commitment-phobe, so much as she’s allergic to anything long term. She loves the sexy, sweaty, and intensely hot hours of the night that come before the sun rises, though. Especially when those nights are spent with Search-and-Rescuer Gage McGraw…

Gage loves his job, but there is one thing he’s starting to like more than the rush of a mission—a stacked blonde with a mouth that haunts his dreams. Every time he steps foot in the sleepy town of Beaufort, he hooks up with Chloe. But he’s tired of hooks-ups. He wants more.

Just the sight of Gage gets Chloe’s blood going. Hot, bothered, and finally naked, she’s ready for their night to start. But before he takes her, he whispers what his intentions really are…and then the games really begin.

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Review:   Tell Me You Need Me is a steamy hot read from Joya Ryan.  Chloe and Gage hook up whenever he is in town, but he wants more.  Her…not so much.  The back and forth between the two characters was laugh out loud funny.  This is a short read at just 132 pages, but those pages are filled with fun, romance, and some serious hotness.

New Release Review: The Game Plan by Kristen Callihan

game on

Title:  The Game Plan

Series:  Game On #3

Author: Kristen Callihan

Publication Date: November 1, 2015

Pages:  323 pages

Rating:  4.5/5 stars

Synopsis:  NFL center Ethan Dexter’s focus has always been on playing football and little else. Except when it comes to one particular woman. The lovely Fiona Mackenzie might not care about his fame, but she’s also never looked at him as anything more than one of her brother-in-law’s best friends. That ends now.

Fi doesn’t know what to make of Dex. The bearded, tattooed, mountain of man-muscle looks more like a biker than a football player. Rumor has it he’s a virgin, but she finds that hard to believe. Because from the moment he decides to turn his quiet intensity on her she’s left weak at the knees and aching to see his famous control fully unleashed.

Fi ought to guard her heart and walk away; they live vastly different lives in separate cities. And Dex is looking for a forever girl. But Dex has upped his game and is using all his considerable charm to convince Fi he’s her forever man.

Game On

Review:   The Game Plan is the third book in the Game On series and features Dex’s and Fiona’s story.

This is a bit different than the other books in the series.  When I read it, there was constant feeling of a quiet storm on the horizon.  I knew something was going to happen, but I was just too engrossed to see it coming.

There is instalust between Dex and Fi, and if you have read any of my previous reviews, you know how much I despise the whole instalust/instalove thing in books.  But here it worked.  It worked because the characters had history and because Dex has been harboring secret feelings for Fi for quite some time.  When these two characters get together its explosive but not in a blow things up kind of way, more in a my-heart-might-explode-from-the-emotion kind of way.  The pace of the book was almost perfect and the ending was just right.  Oddly enough, this series is like Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  The Hook-Up (book 1) was Mama Bear, The Friend Zone (book 2) was Papa Bear and this book was Baby Bear…just right.

The Game Plan is a sweet and sensual read that you won’t want to put down.  There is a HEA and a satisfying epilogue that seals the deal.

Or will she turn away from the one man willing to do anything to save her?

I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Review:   This book has it all – mystery, danger, sex and romance. I found myself rooting for Natalie from page 1. There are a lot of layers to the book and I found myself reading in the wee hours of the morning just to figure out the mystery of Natalie’s stalker.  Natalie is a complex character who makes you feel a range of emotions.  Jake is the sweetest alpha male I’ve ever read and you can’t help be love him!  He is hot, sexy and swoon-worthy.   All-in-all, I enjoyed the book.  There were a few things that I wasn’t sure were necessary, like the romance between Jake’s sister and his friend.  I didn’t think is added anything to the story, but I wasn’t aware this was part of a series, so I’m assuming that the inclusion of their relationship is to set up another book Revealed to Him is an emotional rollercoaster with a twist and a HEA!

New release review: Missing Dixie by Caisey Quinn

Title: Missing Dixie
Series: Neon Dreams #3

Author: Caisey Quinn

Publication Date: October 27, 2015
Genre: New Adult & College Romance
Pages: 304 pages

Rating: 5/5 stars
Synopsis: Fighting for redemption . . .
I’ve lived most of my life in darkness, beneath the shadows of secrets and addictions. The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt the only girl I’d ever loved—the one who brought me into the light. In my entire life I’d made one promise—a promise I’d intended to keep. I’ve broken that promise and now I have to live with the fallout. Dixie Lark hates me, and I have to tell her that I love her. I also have to tell her a truth that might destroy us forever.
Can she love me, even if she can’t forgive me?
Learning to move on . . .
Gavin Garrison broke his promise to my brother and he broke my heart in the process.I may never love anyone the way I’ve loved him, but at least I won’t spend my life wondering “what if.” We had our one night and he walked away. I’m beginning to move on, but my brother’s wedding and a battle of the bands are about to throw us together again.
Our band is getting a second chance, but I don’t know if I can give him one. How do you hand your heart back to the person who set it on fire once already?

Review: I feel like I waited for this book forever. Finally, Gavin’s story. I was not disappointed. This third book in the Neon Dreams series is a story of redemption and never giving up on the one you love.

Gavin Garrison is one of the most misunderstood book characters I’ve ever read. In Leaving Amarillo (Neon Dreams book one), I just read Gavin as a troubled jerk who couldn’t make up his mind. Missing Dixie fills us in on all of Gavin’s troubled past, his history with Dixie and what happened in the year when Dixie was in Houston. (You don’t have to read book one to understand what is going on, but I highly recommend starting from the beginning of the series because the characters are pretty complex and their stories intertwine throughout the books.) Dixie is Gavin’s salvation, his motivation and his one true love.

Admittedly, I get really into a book when I’m reading it. I get lost in the characters and the story. This book pulled me in farther than most. I cried more than once. At one point I was openly sobbing. This book is that emotional.

The bottom line: Missing Dixie is an emotional and highly-charged story of coming back from the darkness, finally accepting help and finding redemption in the light of the love of your life. The book has a happily ever after that ties up not only Missing Dixie, but the entire Neon Dreams series. There is even a surprising short epilogue that made me smile. I’m sad that the series is over, but I am so glad I found it.

Review: Loving Dallas by Caisey Quinn

loving dallas

Title:  Loving Dallas

Series: Neon Dreams

Author: Caisey Quinn

Publication Date: June 16, 2015

Genre:  New Adult & College Romance

Pages:  320 pages

Rating:  5/5 stars

Synopsis:  In the second novel in bestselling author Caisey Quinn’s Neon Dreams series, a country rock band and its members embark on the rocky road to fame and find love along the way.

Every dream comes with a price…

I’m familiar with it.

I’ve had to leave behind everyone I cared about—my sister, my best friend, my band, and my high school sweetheart—in order to chase my dream of making it in Nashville.

But when Robyn Breeland walks back into my life, it’s as if the universe has decided to give me a second chance.  I’m just not sure it’s one I’m willing to take.

I practically majored in it.

Dallas Lark was the first boy I ever loved and the one who’d shattered my heart into pieces.  But I’ve moved on. Working in promotions at Midnight Bay Bourbon, I’m too busy to sit around moping over my ex. But when my company decides to sponsor his tour, I’ll have to face him whether I’m ready to or not. Dallas is determined to drive me to distraction, and my body begs me to let him.

Trouble is, my heart can’t tell the difference between a second chance and making the same mistake twice.

Review:   I realize this novel has been out for several months, but it bears revisiting since the latest book in the series was released last week.

A little background about the Neon Dream series – the series is about the members of the band Leaving Amarillo.  The band is made up of Dallas, his sister, Dixie, and their best friend, Gavin.  They are a complicated group of people who come from difficult backgrounds and are family to each other.  Each book in the series focuses on one of the band members.  The first book, Leaving Amarillo, is about the three of them collectively, but mostly focuses on Dixie.  Book two is Dallas’s story and book three is Gavin’s.

Loving Dallas is an emotional story of second chance love.  Dallas and Robin were high school sweethearts.  They were everything to each other, until Robin broke it off without explanation.  Dallas kind of went off the rails a little after the break up, but he never forgot Robin, or stopped loving her.  In Loving Dallas, they are unexpectedly brought back together and their love is given a second chance.  Of course, with all great books, the path to happily-ever-after is paved with speed bumps.

I wasn’t a big fan of Dallas in book one.  Oh, you know it.  I kind of love Dallas now.  Poor, understood Dallas.  He really redeems himself and who knew he had such alpha tendencies in him.

Loving Dallas will make you swoon, laugh, cry and cheer.  This book had one of the best HEAs of the books I’ve read of late.
