New Release + 4.5 Star Review of Rushing In by Lexi Blake

Title: Rushing In
Series: The Blackhawk Boys #2
Author: Lexi Ryan
Genre: New Adult
 Release Date: August 30, 2016
Blurb

The favor seemed simple: Keep my new stepsister out of trouble for one summer.

I’ve never met Grace Lee, but Mom tells me she’s a quiet and artsy college student with a troubled past. When I agreed to let her stay with me, I thought it was no big deal. I expected to share my apartment with a sullen girl who’d spend hours locked in her room.

I didn’t expect a walking fantasy determined to make me lose my cool.

I didn’t expect a woman with secrets so dark, so deep, I’d throw away everything if it would save her from the past.

Rushing in to do this favor is turning my life upside down—and not just because Grace needs her ass spanked. Keep her out of trouble? Grace is the trouble. And I want in.

My Review:

4.5/5 Stars!!

Rushing In is book two in the Blackhawk Boys Series and it is so, so good.

We met Chris in book 1 and he was sweet and kind and the poor guy got duped and even though he was not the hero in book 1, you couldn’t help but love him.  Now he gets his own book and dang it, I love him even more.  He is a little bit jock, a little bit brain and a whole lot Prince Charming.

Grace, on the other hand, it a bit of a mess.  It took quite a ways into the book to get the whole of her back story, but when it came out, her personality and mannerisms made more sense.

This is an emotional read.  It isn’t emotional on the level of book 1, but I don’t think it was meant to be, at least not in the first half.  Once things pick up half way through, it will blow you away!

I should warn you…grab the tissues and set aside a block of time, because once you pick up the book, you won’t want to put it down and you will feel all the feels.

A must buy!

Rushing In Excerpt © 2016 by Lexi RyanChris arches a brow and skims his gaze over my body—correction, my dress and Chucks. “You’re gonna go hiking in that?”

I shrug. “It’s not like it’s full-length and gonna get tangled around my legs or anything.”

His gaze drifts down my body again, this time landing on the thigh visible beneath the hem of my dress. “It’s certainly not,” he mumbles, and the way he says it has my cheeks burning and me reaching for my water.

So damn thirsty.

We finish packing up our lunch together, and after we put the cooler back in the car, I grab the park pamphlet out of the front seat. “Come on,” I say, nodding in the direction of the outlook. “It’s my turn to be in charge.”

The park is beautiful, but as soon as we enter the woods and I see the overlook, my breath catches. From here, we have a view of the ravine below and the creek rushing through the bottom. Mossy rock faces make up the ravine walls, and trees protrude from them. It’s possibly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.

I head past the overlook and take the stairs down into the ravine. It’s shady back here and feels ten degrees cooler than our picnic table in the sun.

At the bottom of the stairs, the trail splits in three directions, and when I follow the sign with the three, Chris puts his hand on my arm. “Hey, this one has ladders.”

I arch a brow and drop my gaze to my shoes. “I can handle it.”

Something passes over his face I don’t understand, and then he sighs and nods. “Okay, but I’m climbing the ladders behind you. If any creep is going to be looking up your dress today, it’s gonna be me.”

My cheeks heat, and my brain instantly diagrams his words and starts analyzing the nuance of each. Just comedy or more? Stupid brain. “Fair enough.”

He mutters something that sounds like “Dreams really do come true,” but I can’t be sure.

The trail leads down into the ravine and along the creek bed. It’s so much cooler down here, and I love the sound of the creek rock crunching under my feet as we walk along.

By the time we come upon the first ladder, there’s no one else around.

“Ladies first,” he says, gesturing toward the ladder.

“Pervert,” I mutter, but I move forward and begin my climb. The rungs are coated in mud, and when I’m halfway up, one foot slips and suddenly Chris’s hands are there, holding me steady, his hands strong and warm against the backs of my legs.

My breath catches, and I force myself to breathe and find my footing. The feel of his hands against my skin causes something to swirl hot and tight low in my belly.

“Are you okay?” he asks, his voice as thick as the forest beyond the trail.

I’m not okay. I’m afraid to move. Afraid not to move. Trapped by a fear that has nothing to do with a slippery ladder and everything to do with falling.

Then, slowly, his thumbs begin to slide over my skin. His hands inch up my thighs until his fingertips skim the bottom edge of my underwear and slip under to trace the bottom curve of my ass.

I cannot breathe.

I force myself to turn my head and look down at him. His jaw is set tight, a picture of self-control, but when his eyes meet mine, his face relaxes and he shoots me a boyish grin. I attempt my best poker face. “Are you copping a feel, Christopher Montgomery?”

His grin goes wide, putting his dimples on full display. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he says, his Southern accent drawing out his words. “I’m just trying to perform a necessary rescue mission.”

“Do I look like I need rescuing?” I ask. Under the lace edge of my panties, his thumb strokes again, a long, slow motion that makes me want to close my eyes and moan. I resist and hold his gaze.

“Who said you’re the one I’m rescuing? Maybe I’m trying to save myself.” He drops his hands and grabs a hold of the sides of the ladder, then he climbs up behind me so his body is pressed against mine, my back to his front. His mouth hovers above my ear, his breath hot and uneven. “Because I swear if I have to go much longer without touching you, I’m going to implode.”

His lips skim my earlobe, and my eyes float closed. My brain has no room for sight when it’s overloaded with sensations. His lips on my ear. His hard chest against my back. His breath against my neck. “I need to know, Grace.”

I open my eyes and swallow hard. I don’t want to talk. Not right now. I’m too afraid I’ll ruin this moment with my choppy stutter. “What?”

“I need to know . . .” He leans his forehead against my shoulder, and I watch his knuckles turn white as he tightens his grip on the side of the ladder.

On the ground beneath us, someone clears his throat. “You two heading up or down?”

Chris mutters a curse and takes a step down so I have the freedom to move. I scramble up the ladder with him behind me. When we reach the top, I can’t look at him.

“Sorry about that,” he calls to the people below, then he grabs my wrist and pulls me off to the right toward a rocky alcove just off the trail. A wooden sign tells me this is “The Devil’s Ice Box,” and beyond the sign, a thin waterfall drizzles into a pool of crystal-clear water. Chris leads the way, following the rocky edge around to the backside of this semi-secluded space and stopping by the waterfall. I pass him, feigning interest in the rocks and water so I don’t have to meet his eyes. There’s a cavern behind the waterfall, a haven from the falling water.

“I have to know,” Chris says, his words nearly drowned out by the falling water. “Is it just me? Everything I feel when you’re close to me? Tell me you feel it too.”

Genre: New Adult

Blurb
We were like two stars orbiting each other—dancing around the possibility that one day we might collide. When we finally did, we opened up a black hole, obliterating everything around us. No one would be the same.

Least of all, us.

Waking up in Vegas married to the guy of your dreams sounds like a good thing, right? Not when you’re Thea Montgomery and said guy is your brother’s best friend.

Thea and Xander have always avoided the connection between them because her brother would never approve. Now, they’re married— the strongest bond you can have as a couple—and they’re not even a real couple…unless they want to be.

Thea wants an annulment immediately, but Xander’s waited too long to see her become his and he won’t let her go easily.

If she wants a divorce, fine, but he wants the summer to convince her that he’s the one. If at the end of the summer she still wants to end their marriage he’ll sign the papers, but until then…

All is not fair in love and war.

My Review:

4.5/5 Stars!

I should start by saying that I have never read a book by Micalea Smeltzer I didn’t like.  Honestly, I’ve loved all of them.  I have read everything she has written.

That being said, When Stars Collide is in my Micalea Smeltzer Top 3.

A lot of authors have written the whole “woke up in Vegas married” trope, but this one is different.  This one is better.

Thea and Xander wake up married.  Xander is thrilled, Thea not so much.  That is all of the story I will give you, because I don’t want to ruin it for you.  It is just so good.

If you have read a book written by Micalea Smeltzer, this is a good one to cut your teeth on.  It is sweet and romantic and funny and Xander…oh, how I love Xander!

I really can’t say anything negative about When Stars Collide.   It is pretty close to perfect.

Unedited and subject to change.

Holy mother of all hangovers.

I’d succumbed to the lure of Vegas and gotten completely wasted. Granted, that’s what everyone did in Las Vegas but I like to think I usually have more sense than the social norm.

I rub my eyes and blink them open. The hotel room comes into formation around me. The walls are a warm golden color and the flat screen on the wall plays some home improvement show. I can see the bathroom from the bed, the tiled walls and large soaking tub.

I roll over onto my side, hoping I can sleep off the hangover, and reel back.

“Oh my God,” I cry, flailing in bed.

My legs kick the sleeping guy beside me.

Not just any sleeping guy.

Oh no.

Xander Kincaid, my brother’s best friend, lays in the bed beside me.

His dark hair tumbles over his forehead and his cheeks are covered with several days worth of scruff. His chest is bare and…holy shit. He’s naked.

I look down.

Oh God, I’m naked too.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, reaching his left hand out to pull me closer to him. That’s when I see it.

“Is that a wedding band?” I scream shrilly.

His eyes narrow. “You don’t fucking remember?”

I shake my head and look at my own hand. A thin silver band rests on my finger. “What did we do?”

He sits up in bed and I try to ignore how adorably rumpled he looks with his hair sticking up.

Everything begins flooding back to me in quick bursts.

Drinks. Kissing.

Laughter.

Confessions of love and desire.

A wedding chapel.

Vows.

Rings.

A contract.

“We’re married,” I whisper. “Holy shit.” It’s all I’ve ever wanted—to be with Xander, but not like this. Never like this. “My brother is going to kill us.”

New Release + 4.5 Star Review: Chasing Castles by Jiffy Kate

Title: Chasing Castles
Series: Finding Focus #1
Release Date: Aug 30, 2016
Add to Goodreads
Long before Dani Reed and Micah Landry, there was the story of Deacon and Camille.
Camille Benoit loved to express herself on canvas and was a dreamer at heart. The small farm she was born and raised on bordered the Landry Plantation, providing her with prime real estate for daydreaming. Even though she spent a lot of time with her head in the clouds, one thing she was always certain about were her feelings for Deacon. He might’ve been two years older and one of her brother’s best friends, but none of that mattered to Cami.
Deacon Landry, older brother to Micah, was the local football star. The town might’ve put him on a pedestal, but he always had his feet firmly planted in the rich Louisiana soil. With all of his skills on and off the field, a good head on his shoulders, and a heart of gold, he was quite the catch, and everyone knew it, especially his long-time best friend, Cami.
I know we’ve done things slowly, but I’ve loved you since I knew what it meant to love someone. “

He is all her heart has ever known. Her past, present and future.  But will the future live up to her dreams?
Join Jiffy Kate in this second book of the Finding Focus series as they take you back to where it all started.

My Review:

4.5/5 Stars!

Chasing Castles is a beautiful love story of best friends who take years to realize their feelings for each other.

Chasing Castles is told from both Deacon and Cami’s POVs and the chapters alternate between past and present.  I am not really a fan of this type of story-telling, but in Chasing Castles it worked.

Deacon is the golden boy, the literal boy next door and the boy Cami has loved since she was eight.  He is pretty near perfect.  Cami is the sweet, sensitive, girl next door who has been Deacon’s best friend all their lives.  He sees her as his friend’s little sister and, therefore, off limits.

I loved this book from start to finish.  I loved that we know they end up together and that we get this perfect story telling us how they finally came to be.

I highly recommend this friends-to-lovers story!

Sitting in front of a half-painted easel in the middle of my little studio with the window shades drawn for the perfect lighting, I stop painting and lay my brush to the side. As I wipe my hands on my smock, I listen closely as a siren from an emergency vehicle draws near.
Any sort of action is noticed in a town the size of French Settlement. If Ms. Becky burns a cake, the whole town knows about it. And the day Mr. Johnson’s truck got stuck in the pond, practically every person was there to witness the fire department getting it unstuck.
Yes, the fire department, because, generally, they don’t have a lot to keep them busy.
So, sirens this close to town, especially on a Saturday morning, are a rare thing.
I watch out the window and listen for a minute or two as the sirens seem to get closer. Unable to curb my curiosity, I walk from the back of the studio, through the gallery, and out onto the sidewalk.
No one is around. My SUV is the only vehicle on the street. So, it doesn’t surprise me when the sirens get further away. There must be something going on out on the highway.
My heart skips a beat because I hate thinking about anyone being in a wreck or anything like that. As I walk back into the gallery, I say a quick prayer for whoever it is. Normally, that’s enough to help me relax. I always pray when I drive by a wreck or see an ambulance fly by.
But, as I sit back down at my easel and pick my paint brush back up, my heart still feels like it’s in my throat.
As I wait for another minute, still hearing sirens off in the distance, I decide to calm my nerves with a call to Annie. Carter is staying out there with her and Sam this morning because my daddy and Kay went into Baton Rouge to buy a new sofa.
“Hey, honey.” Annie’s voice sounds calm and chipper, so I try to make my stomach take a cue from her.
“Hey, Annie.”
“How’s it going this morning? Everything alright?”
“I was calling to ask you the same,” I say, laughing at my paranoia. Since Carter came into my life, I have a tendency to be a bit over-protective. I now understand why my daddy was always keeping a tight rein on me when I was little. It would kill me when he wouldn’t let me do everything the boys did. But now I get it. I don’t know how I’d feel if Carter had been a girl. Being the mom of a boy is bad enough. It might be worse on some levels because boys can be such little dare devils.
“Everything is right as rain out here,” she says, with a clang of a pot in the background. “Me and Carter are whippin’ up some banana nut muffins.”
“Sounds delicious.”
“We’ll be sure to save you some.”
“Don’t let Deke eat them all.”
“You’re in luck. He went into the restaurant to finish up some paperwork.”
“I thought he was takin’ the day off.”
“Well, he said if you were gonna be busy all day at the gallery, he might as well get ahead on some ordering.”
“Okay,” I say, the nervous ball back in my stomach. “Did Micah go in with him?”
“No, Micah’s in Baton Rouge this mornin’. He must’ve stayed at the apartment last night.”
“Okay.”
“I think these muffins are ready to go in the oven. What do you think, Carter?” I can hear Carter telling her they’re ready. He loves being in the kitchen with Annie. I think he takes after his Uncle Micah in that sense. “Will we see ya for lunch?”
“Yeah, I should be done by then.”
After I hang up with Annie, I still can’t get the worry to go away. I think about taking a drive out to the highway just to check things out myself, but that would be silly. I’m not sure what’s going on, but whatever it is, I doubt they need an extra rubber-necker.
So instead, I sit back down on my stool and hit send on Deacon’s number, smiling as his handsome face comes up on the screen of my phone.
“It’s Deacon Landry. Sorry I missed your call. Please leave a message.”
I pull the phone away from my ear and frown at the screen, hitting end and immediately hitting the button to call again.
Voicemail.
Maybe he left his phone in his truck?
He does that sometimes.
Taking a deep breath as I try to stay calm, I begin to pace around the room as I call the restaurant. Normally, if Deacon’s doing paperwork, he won’t answer the phone, but if he’s at his desk and sees it’s me, he will.
After five rings, the long message for Pockets comes over the phone.
“Thank you for calling Pockets, Home of the Gator Pocket. Our hours are Monday through Thursday, eleven to eleven. Friday and Saturday, two to two. We’re located on Highway 16. You can’t miss us. Hope to see you soon!”
I don’t know why I listen to the entire message. It’s not like Deacon can answer once the voicemail picks up.
Staring at the phone, I hit redial for the restaurant, letting it ring until the message starts over.
Hang up.
Redial.
After three more tries, I call Deacon’s phone again.
Still no answer.
I can’t ignore the feeling in the pit of my stomach. There’s no way I can paint like this, so I might as well drive out to the restaurant and see for myself. I’m sure everything is fine, and I’ll have wasted fifteen minutes of my day, but I can’t relax until I know he’s okay.
As I pick up my purse and keys, my phone rings in my hand. I let out a relieved sigh until I see that it’s not Deacon who’s calling.
“Hello?”
“Cami.” Sam’s voice comes over the phone, and he sounds worried, which makes my heart beat even faster, and my knees feel weak. I don’t even need him to tell me something’s wrong. I know it. I can feel it deep in my bones.

In case you didn’t notice, there are two of us.

We’re both from the south, one just a little further than the other.

Jiff was born and raised in Louisiana. She’s now living in Texas with her two teenagers and a bulldog named Georgia Rose. She loves purple and 80’s movies and geeking out at Comic Cons.

Jenny Kate was born and raised in Oklahoma. She’s the mom of a twelve-year-old and two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Wrigley and Oliver. She also loves Kris Bryant, the Chicago Cubs and coffee.

Some people think we’ve been friends forever, but in reality, we’ve only known each other for five years. Four of those years, we’ve spent spinning tales and writing words. Our first published book, Finding Focus, was released in November 2015.

If you like a romance set in the south, then you’ll love our southern fried fiction with heart and soul.

And I’m too addicted to her taste to walk away.

 My Review:

5/5 Stars!

Oh.  My.  Nathan is one dirty-talking, no scratch that, a filthy-talking hero and he will scorch your panties right off your body.

You’ve been warned!

This book is some kind of genius.  If you don’t like dirty talk, stay away, because this book is pretty much one verbal orgasm from start to finish and it is brilliant!

Nathan is a no holds barred, sex machine and he loves to pleasure a woman.  He is cocky and mouthy and hysterically funny, but under all that front is a real, honest and big-hearted man.

I am not even going to go into the heroine, because that might give too much away, but suffice it to say, she is Nathan’s equal, possibly his superior in the game he plays.  She is brilliant!

The real beauty of this book is the writing.  One moment I needed a fan and the next I’m laughing hysterically.  The one-liners in this book are pee-your-pants funny.  I opened this book because it was next on my list to read.  That was a 11:30 p.m.  I did not put the book down until it was finished.  That was some around 5 a.m.  I didn’t sleep that night and it was so worth it.  Dakota Grey is going to be a name you won’t forget!

“Since you seem to know everything about me, tell me something.”“Tell me my name.” She raises a brow.

Fuck.

I pull a hand through my hair and figure shit is going south anyway. I lean down so my mouth is right on her earlobe. “Stealth.”

She puts a hand to my chest and laughs. “What?”

“You put your tits on the counter to get the bartender’s attention. That’s stealthy so…Stealth and Heels.”

“And or in?” There’s amusement in her tone and she hasn’t pushed me away.

“And.”

“So you’re admitting you have no idea what my name is?”

“Yup.”

To my surprise she leans into me, leaving no room between us. My cock perks to attention. Her dress is a second skin. I can pretend for a moment she’s bare against me, and though I’m not a tits man, hers are full and soft—I want to lick, bite and suck them until her eyes roll back.

She tilts her head and we’re cheek to cheek. “I know what you are, Nathan. I know what you need.”

She’s speaking words, but all I can hear in her low, sultry tone is fuck me hard. And I’m an accommodating man. “Are you going to give it to me?”

What? I’m not going to say no. Or talk her out of whatever she’s planning to do.

“You torture women, you know that, right?” The huskiness in her voice is the best friction.

“Torture?” I ask.

“Mind blowing head. And then they have to somehow live the rest of their lives cold turkey or with second best. That makes you an asshole.”

“Not my fault I’m good at what I do.”

She shifts and her skin brushes my cheek again. “It is when you know damn well the woman is looking to settle down.”

“I never lie.”

“You never turn a woman away either.”

“They’re all adults.” I don’t fuck women who need help. Genuine help. Telling her that feels too much like defending my life choices. I don’t make a woman believe I can love her. That’s cruel.

She huffs. “You have every intention of destroying her world.”

Red flashes over my vision at the accusation. “And what are you going to do about it, Sugar?”

She laughs—I’m not sure if it’s at me—and I fucking feel the sound in my every bone. “You want a taste of me, Nathan?”

Yet he unearths not a monster, but a smoldering and secret desire – one that has always terrified Willow, and may be her undoing. His touch sets her alight. His strength burns through her like flame. And his control melts her each time he binds her virgin body, possesses her, teaches her the strength in weakness and the passion in submission. But that passion may be her damnation, and in the end Willow must choose: Priest’s love, or her own life.

When his every kiss is pure sin…can she resist damnation long enough for Priest to find his way to redemption?

My Review:

3.5/5 Stars!

I don’t know how I feel about this book.  I guess that’s my honest opinion on this one.

I finished it about a week ago, but due to the Amazon issues, I held off on my review.  There are a lot of happy people out there now that it is available on Amazon.

So, I think my issue with this book is how dark it is.  I’m okay with BDSM in books, but this was…different, but I’m not quite sure how to describe my feelings on it.  Don’t get me wrong, I know it’s fiction, but maybe this one doesn’t speak to me as much as others I have read.

That being said, the writing was phenomenal.  The characters were so complex that at times I felt myself being drawn into their world and their heads.  So, despite my hesitation at the subject matter, the fact that I could get pulled in like that tells me it is more than a good book.

I warn you, it is dark, it is dirty and it is deep.  So, if that’s not something you are into in your books, then this may not be for you.  However, if you are willing to suspend belief, or maybe your beliefs, then try this book.  You may find yourself surprised.

His fingers grazed the curve of her waist. With a gasp, she snapped her eyes open. He met her gaze, fox-gold turned hot as melting amber, fierce and animal and stripping her more bare than that exposed, naked flesh. She felt like a butterfly pinned to a board, held by his gaze, her limbs going slack and her struggles stopping against her will. She hardly felt it, when he hooked a fingertip under the bunched edge of her tank top—then ripped with such effortless strength, the threads of the side seam snapping apart one after the other, until there was nothing left of her tank top but rags of cloth. No, she hardly felt that…but she felt it when he teased those rags from underneath the ropes, as every scrap of cloth stroked and washed against her skin until she was nothing but a trembling tangle of sensitivity and frozen breaths building tighter and tighter in her chest.

And she felt it when that taunting, teasing fingertip hooked in her panties, slipping into the opening just above her thigh, and she realized just what he intended to do.

“Don’t touch me.”

Suddenly she could move again—and she writhed against the ropes, fighting to squirm away. But she had barely an inch of slack, nowhere to go but against the ropes, hanging in midair and so fucking helpless she would scream with sheer rage if she didn’t want to cry with sheer hopelessness. Was he enjoying this? Enjoying watching her struggle? Enjoying how her skin tightened and pulled and her nipples swelled and her breaths came shallow with every touch, her fucking disobedient body whispering dirty thing, dirty thing, give me more of that dirty thing while her mind and heart screamed no, no, not like that, never like that?

Was he enjoying having her at his mercy, unable to escape his every touch?

His fingers dug into the fabric of her panties. Clenched it against his fist. Pulled. Cloth creased, bit, burrowed into her dirty, dirty thing, her wet dirty thing, her pulsing dirty thing, and she was a fucking dirty thing when she arched off the seat and cried out and whimpered and mewled, as he dragged the cloth against her and all she felt was sweet-rough friction and that slickness, sickness, wet and running like a licking tongue.

“D-don’t,” she cried again, and yet he only pulled harder, the panties so much worse than the rope when every fold and crease molded to her flesh like liquid fire and left nothing untouched. “Don’t!”

He paused, held that steady pressure, keeping her on the end of a taut-stretched wire. “Are you a virgin, firefly?” he growled.

She spat in his face.

Panting, body heaving, she drew back and spat in his face, and watched with a sort of foggy, dazed satisfaction as it landed in a wet streak on his cheek, dripping down his bronzed skin like a tear. He remained unmoved, watching her steadily, waiting, holding her dangling from the one hand as if he hardly felt her weight and those damnable fingers pulling her panties against her flesh.

“My body is not your business,” she hissed.

“Right now, your body is my property.” He slid a fingertip down into the crease between her hip and thigh, the place where the seam of her panties normally cut in whenever she sat, moved, shifted; there was something too personal about that touch, so close and yet so far, a threat that made her shrink back even as that feeling inside her nearly exploded, that hollow feeling that seemed like a rapacious beast, a dragon with an open maw and empty gullet that was hungry, so hungry to be full. “I want an answer.”

He bunched her panties into his hand again, curling the fabric in stretched wrinkles against his palm—and this time when he pulled he gave no quarter, a single sharp rip and a sound of cloth tearing like tape pulling off the spool, high and shrill. There was a moment’s painful bite, a muted cry welling in her throat, and then the pressure eased as the tatters of her panties fell, forgotten, to the floor.

Still he watched her. And she, naked with nowhere to hide, curled into herself; she felt her nudity like a presence, like a thing touching her and twisting over her flesh to force her to feel every moment of her exposure, every moment of her vulnerability and helplessness. Priest said nothing. He didn’t need to. He never needed to. When he wanted an answer, he got one, and would wait her out as he had before, implacable and unmoving and relentless. She had always imagined men like him to be all force, all bluster, all violence and snarling and threats.

She was quickly learning that silence—silence and careful, metered application of just enough strength to drive his point home—was just as effective as force.

And just as frightening.

Dangling from his grip like a puppy, she hung her head. Anything not to meet those piercing eyes; anything not to feel the shame of giving in to the quiet demand in his gaze; anything to make this end, so he would stop tormenting her and leave her alone.

“…yes,” she mumbled. Still he didn’t speak, or put her down. Defeat sparked into frustration, and she glared at him from under the fall of her hair. “Yes, all right? Are you happy? Is that what you fucking wanted to know?”“Yes,” he said simply, and lowered her to the floor.

He spends his days as a suit-and-tie corporate consultant and business writer, and his nights writing contemporary romance and erotica that flirt with the edge of taboo—when he’s not being tackled by two hyperactive cats.He also writes genre-bending science fiction and fantasy tinged with a touch of horror and flavored by the influences of his multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual background as Xen Sanders. He wavers between calling himself bisexual and calling himself queer, but no matter what word he uses he’s a staunch advocate of LGBTQIA representation and visibility in genre fiction. Kat inched away, although what she really wanted to do was move closer and lick those tattoos on his chest. The familiar rush of heat that she experienced every time she was in his proximity returned.

“Alex, what do you think of romantic relationships between younger women and older men?” Kat blurted out, the filter in her brain incinerated by the strong urges she felt.

Alex closed the space between them. His breath filled her lungs. “I’m not sure how I’m supposed to answer that question.”

“The movie we’re watching… it’s about the president and his relationship with a younger woman. What’s your opinion on that?”

Wow, that was a smart comeback.

“She wants to kill him,” Alex said, dryly. “That’s my opinion.”

“But what do you think about the relationship? Do you think this type of relationship has potential?”

“Wouldn’t bet my money on it.” Alex rocked his head in sympathy for the fictional president.

“But does it always have to be this way? Couldn’t two such people have a good relationship?” Kat urged.

Instead of asking a simple, Do you want to do something about this atom bomb of an attraction between us? she was asking these useless questions, hoping he’d get the idea that she was referring to him and her.

Which he totally wasn’t, by the way.

“A morally corrupt politician and a psychopathic killer are hardly relationship material.” Alex balked.

Note to self: I suck at being indirect.

“No, that’s not what I meant.” Raising her hands in the air, she clapped. “For a minute, imagine this scenario. Suppose things were different. Suppose neither of the two people involved are psychopaths or evil power-mongers. For argument’s sake, let’s assume there is a fourteen-year age gap between them. And they’re mature enough to—”

Alex cupped her face, arresting her with his gaze. The hunger that she saw in his eyes threw her off balance.

“Kat, just say you want to kiss me.”

She didn’t have to think.

“I want to kiss you.” It was a hoarse, needy whisper that sounded as painful as it felt.

Wrapping one arm around her waist, he pulled her into his lap. “Good, because I want to kiss you, too.”

Pressing into her mouth, the hard lines of his lips enveloped her soft, rounded ones and his hand teased her breasts, sending sensations circling up her thighs into her core.

The gentle suckling grew into a war between their tongues, then into a full-blown mouth orgasm. They fought to savor each other’s lips and tongues, but impatience made it impossible for either of them to get enough.
