The highest stakes…

My father gambles every night, falling deeper and deeper into debt. When he hits the bottom, he places a new bet: his daughter. I’m his entry bet to the biggest underground poker game.

Every kind of danger circles the velvet-covered table, but only one man makes me tremble.

A trailer park princess.

The son of a criminal king.

We don’t belong together, but I’m caught in a twisted game.

His eyes meet mine with dark promise. And when he puts down his cards, I know I’m going to lose more than my body. I’m going to lose everything.

THE KING is the first book in the new Masterpiece duet about risking your heart and finding yourself. It’s a spin-off from the USA Today bestselling trilogy but can be read separately.

My Review:

4.5 Stars!!

Well, Damon Scott did not disappoint!

The King is another dark and dramatic read from Skye Warren. Not as dark as The Endgame series, but there is a reason for that. I suspect it will pick up its darkness in book two.

I very much enjoyed The King. I’ve been curious about Damon Scott since he appeared in The Endgame series. I read the prologue book, The Prince, which is an introduction to Penny and Damon (it is also included in this book) and gives their background story from way, way back. The King moves forward 8 years. Eight years that Damon and Penny have been apart.

The series is written entirely from Penny’s POV, so we never really get a look into Damon’s psyche and boy would I pay for that. The book moved along quickly and kept me interested. It is a short and quick read. (The f/u book will be a full length novel). I was a little disappointed in the length, but I understand why the author broke the books up like she did, or at least I think I do, but won’t have confirmation until The Queen.

Here’s the thing, there is an inappropriate age gap between Damon and Penny, which I believe limited the direction the book could go in and I think limited the connection between the two characters. I was a little disappointed in that at first, but after a little thought, I realized it would not have worked as well if we didn’t get this set up for what is to come.

I am rooting for Damon and Penny. I loved this start to their story and can’t wait to find out where it goes from here.
