“Hey, you know what? You didn’t let me finish my pitch before, when I asked you to go on a date with me.”
She sighed, her eyes losing a little brightness and her smile dimming as she turned away to look at the reception guests on the dance floor. He tilted his head to see her better, and though he didn’t know her well enough to read her expression with accuracy, he saw wariness as her eyebrows knitted together. But when she sucked her lower lip into her mouth, he perceived a little bit of longing too, which made him press his advantage.
“Didn’t you wonder how I knew all that Shakespeare stuff?” he asked.
“Yes, actually,” she said, looking surprised by his question. “Come to think of it, I did wonder, but then you distracted me.”
He grinned. “Good distraction, right?”
She rolled her eyes, but her lips tilted up a little, which made him happy. “You were saying?”
“The OSF is twenty minutes from my house. I worked there taking tickets over spring break last year. So, if you’d like to go with me sometime—as a date—I might even be able to take you backstage. I’m sure Julia would give us a tour of the Allen Elizabethan Theatre.”
“Julia?” said Hannah, raising an eyebrow.
He saw it in her eyes, the way she was mentally backing away from him at the mere mention of another woman. Is that how she saw all men?
As players? As someone who’d hurt her and cheat on her if she let her guard down? He couldn’t help the way his feelings for her surged as he watched her—how much he wanted to be the person to prove to her that she could give her heart to someone who would keep it safe.
Julia is my Mom’s friend who works in group sales, is married, and has two kids.” He pulled Hannah’s hand behind his back, holding it hostage and drawing her closer until her chest pressed against his.
“And to be clear? I wouldn’t ask you out if I was seeing someone else. I don’t do that. I’m not with anyone right now, Hannah … except you.”
She flinched, and her face went utterly blank, except for her eyes, which looked worried and uncomfortable.
“You’re not with me,” she said softly, loosening her hand from his grasp and stepping away from him.
“I didn’t mean—”
“I have to use the ladies’ room. I’ll find you in a little bit, okay?
She turned and started walking away, while he babbled incoherently at her back:
“Wait. Hannah! No. I didn’t…I just—I just meant…Crap!”
He stopped talking when she was out of sight.
Dang it, Liam! Why do you have to be so freaking intense?
Probably because it bothered him that she kept trying to friend-zone him when he didn’t feel friendly toward her and pretty much hadn’t from the moment he’d laid eyes on her.
There were some girls he met—especially the shallow, self-absorbed ones—who turned him off the moment he met them. Most of the popular girls at his high school thought he was trouble, and even after he’d straightened himself out, they didn’t give him a chance. Not really. They’d fool around with him at a party—there was never a shortage of popular girls who wanted to make out with a bad boy—but on Monday morning, they’d act like they were too drunk to remember kissing him. And it sort of sucked, because Liam Callahan was one of those guys who quietly longed for a girlfriend, even though his reputation had pegged him inaccurately as a player.
He wanted to date someone. He wanted to leave a party with her on Saturday night, and hold her hand when he walked into school on Monday morning. He wanted to be the first person she texted when she was happy or upset about something. He wanted to invite her over for dinner with his mom. He wanted to introduce her to his friends:
You guys, this is my girlfriend.
He’d imagined saying those words about a thousand times, but he’d never had the chance to say them, and it bothered him. A lot.
But tonight? Meeting Hannah? Somehow it felt like maybe what he wanted was actually, finally, possible.
When Hannah looked up at him with those huge, vulnerable, dark brown eyes, he felt hopeful.
“Damn it,” he growled softly, frustrated that he’d pushed her too hard.
Maybe he was being pushy, but he liked her, and for all he knew, she was driving back up to Brookings in the morning. He wanted her to say yes to a date—his heart needed to know that he’d see her again.

Fans of New York Times bestselling authors Samantha Young, Sylvia Day, and E. L. James won’t want to miss this modern—and deliciously wicked—take on a classic fairy tale . . .

Even as I see the same longing for me in her oh-so-blue eyes, I know she belongs to another—one who does not deserve her. But it’s just a matter of time before the tension between us breaks. For this beast will have what he desires. To hell with the consequences. This is my world . . . and I will claim my beauty.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

A modern day Beauty and the Beast re-telling.

This one is a little different that what you will remember of Beauty and the Beast. There is a Beauty, Lilly, and a Beast, Grayson, but instead of books and a library, this one is art and a studio. The general plot of the book is pretty much the same as the familiar fairytale. Unfortunately, I just didn’t connect with this one. There wasn’t the angst that the original fairytale had and I felt like it took too long for them to give in to their attraction. But, they do get their HEA.

An okay book, just not my favorite.

A HORRIFIC RECURRING NIGHTMARE IS THREATENING TO STEAL HER SANITY…

Dr. Corinne Cabot is living the American dream. She’s a successful ER physician in Chicago who’s married to a handsome husband. Together they live in a charming house in the suburbs. But appearances can be deceiving—and what no one can see is Corinne’s dark past. Troubling gaps in her memory mean she recalls little about a haunting event in her life years ago that changed everything.

She remembers only being in the house the night two people were found murdered. Her father was there, too. Now her father is in prison; she hasn’t been in contact in years. Repressing that terrifying memory has caused Corinne moments of paranoia and panic. Sometimes she thinks she sees things that aren’t there, hears words that haven’t been spoken. Or have they? She fears she may be losing her mind, unable to determine what’s real and what’s not.

So when she senses her husband’s growing distance, she thinks she’s imagining things. She writes her suspicions off to fatigue, overwork, anything to explain what she can’t accept—that her life really isn’t what it seems.

5 Stars!!

Holy wow! This book… twisty, dark, psychological… amazingly great read!

This review will be short, sweet and too the point so as to avoid any and all possible spoilers.

Nothing is as it seems in this book. Nothing. It is edgy, erotic. It is shocking.

Title: DEMONS
Author: J.L. Drake
Series: Devil’s Reach
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release: March 27th
Cover Designer: Deranged Doctors Design
Cover Model: Josh Mario John
Photographer: Lane Dorsey

About DEMONS

Trigger
I thought the light would bring redemption. Salvation. But it only brought the Devil to my doorstep. My demons are breaking through, and the reaper is moving closer. My weakness has been exposed, and there’s only one person who can calm this hell…

Tess
I broke a promise to myself, and now I’m paying for it. I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be a part of this hell. But I don’t have a choice…

My Review

4.5 Stars!

Oh my, she did it again. Left me hanging, anxious for the next book. That little, teeny tiny snippet of book three at the end of this one has me on book three watch. ??

Trigger and Tess’s story continues in Demons and Demons is the perfect name. Both our surly hero and our fir heroine deal with their past demons in book two. There is a fair amount of Time Trigger and Tess spend apart, which gives us a deeper look into their backstories and how they are affected in the present by their past. The mystery of the mole continues until the last chapter of the book and I have tell you, I did NOT see that coming. I had my suspicions, but that actual mole never crossed my mind. Poor person. I loved their character and it is going to suck when have to read about their ultimate demise.

The book ends on another cliffhanger. JL Drake warns of this but calls it a small cliff. Love your books. Lady, but small cliff it was not. Lol! Drake pulls us deeper into the world of the Devil’s Reach and what a world it is.

This is one of my favorite MC series and I can’t wait to see what comes next!

Silence fell. The only things screaming were the demons inside my head. My anger rose rapidly.

“Jace!” I barked. “Clean this shit up.”

He and the newest prospect, Rich, started to push the human waste down the industrial drain with a shovel.

Blood dripped from the tips of my hair and ran down my face. I grabbed the razor we used to skin the heads and moved over to the mirror. I gathered the hair in the center of my head and lifted it up then buzzed the sides.

I left the mohawk long.

Better.

I flipped my hair out of my face and spun around to face my men. They seemed unsure what to think.

“Like the new look.” Rail said, trying to break the tension.

Gus nodded in agreement, but I caught him glance to where Morgan stood off to his side.

“Fuck, I would give my left nut to have Tess back,” Rail muttered to Brick.

Brick remained silent, which was good, as I was moments from flipping my fuck switch.

I grabbed a bottle of whiskey on my way out and stuck it in my saddlebag before I kicked my bike to start the engine. The air was cold and whipped through my hoodie as the smell of the rain to come made memories come thick and fast about the last time it poured.

Her lips shivered, but her eyes told me she had a lot more fight in her.

“You’re cold.

“I’m fine.” She pulled the joint from my lips.

I shook that thought from my head and turned down a side street. I cut the engine and found Mud outside his surf shop.

“Evening.” He grinned when he saw the bottle dangling from my fingers. “You want to keep going?”

I nodded and removed my hoodie and tossed it on

the table, but carefully laid my cut on the leather couch away from the mess.

He motioned for me to take the chair. I flopped back and looked up at the naked posters that littered the ceiling.

Mud lit a joint before he spoke. “This new?” He pointed at his head.

I nodded.

“You want a glass?”

I wiggled the cap off with one hand and drank the neck before I set it aside. Mud huffed with a grin, and smoke poured out of the corners of his mouth. He tapped his phone, and The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” played through shitty speakers. I eyed him, curious if it was meant for me, but he just clicked the machine on and went to work on my pec.

I focused all my energy on the needle that drilled tiny pinpricks into my flesh, but sadly, it didn’t last long. The pain subsided, and I was left with my demons gnawing on my memories.

Nolan was nowhere to be found.

My Review

4 Stars!!

FYI – I am reeling from the cliffhanger! OMG!

I love a good MC book as much as the next reader, but lately, I have found that they have let me down a bit. However, THIS book… LOVED it! A deliciously dark hero and an equally dark yet so strong heroine. Tess was a little bit crazy, a lot damaged and yet fearless. Trigger is one of the darkest heroes I’ve read and yet he was more real than most. The story was really good. The writing was fantastic. I am a little upset with myself that I haven’t read more from J. L. Drake before now.

J. L. Drake really excels at character development, giving us little bits and pieces of Trigger and Tess’s pasts as memories and then developing their present selves from there. She expertly evolves them into some more, something better alongside each other. The cast of secondary characters are great and include characters you love and characters you love to hate. She immerses the reader into the world of the Devil’s Reach MC. The story builds, the relationship between Tess and the MC and Tess and Trigger grows and builds and then she ends the book on a mouth-gaping cliffhanger that you somehow know is coming but don’t see it when it arrives.

Addictive, dark and sexy, Trigger is a great read!

New Release ~ 4 Stars for The Social Affair by Britney King!

Title: The Social Affair
Author: Britney King
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Release Date: January 18, 2018

In the tradition of Gone Girl and Behind Closed Doors comes a gripping, twisted, furiously clever read that demands your attention, and keeps you guessing until the very end. For fans of the anti-heroine and stories told in unorthodox ways, The Social Affair delivers us the perfect dark and provocative villain. The only question—who is it?

A timeless, perfect couple waltzes into the small coffee shop where Izzy Lewis works. Instantly enamored, she does what she always does in situations like these: she searches them out on social media.

Just like that—with the tap of a screen— she’s given a front row seat to the Dunns’ picturesque life. This time, she’s certain she’s found what she’s been searching for. This time, she’ll go to whatever lengths it takes to ensure she gets it right—even if this means doing the unthinkable.

Intense and original, The Social Affair is a disturbing psychological thriller that explores what can happen when privacy is traded for convenience.

My Review

4 Stars!

Britney King is quite talented. I think we all knew this already. (Hello, Water Under the Bridge series anyone?) So, in case you don’t know what you’re getting into with this, just think deep, psychological thriller.

King outdid herself with The Social Affair. It is twisty and full of crazy turns that you will never see coming. I finished the last line of the book with my mouth agape and my head spinning. I turned and looked at my husband and said a few choice words followed by a long exhale. I was lucky to be on vacation from work with this one, because once I picked it up, I couldn’t put it down. And it is NOT a fast read by any means. There is too much to pay attention to, to remember and to learn as you read along. I stayed up all night and into the morning to finish it and I do not regret it for a second.

The writing is amazing. The plot is crazy twisted and so unique. The characters will intrigue you. Some you will despise, others you will feel pangs of sympathy for, but none of them is really as they seem. However, cleverly enough, this IS a romance with a HEA. Believe it or not. And, it is quite a satisfying HEA.

This is not a book you want to miss! Take a ride on The Social Affair train. You will NOT regret it!

Britney King lives in Austin, Texas with her husband, children, two dogs, one ridiculous cat, and a partridge in a pear tree.

When she’s not wrangling the things mentioned above, she writes psychological, domestic and romantic thrillers set in suburbia.

Currently, she’s writing three series and several standalone novels.

The Bedrock Series features an unlikely heroine who should have known better. Turns out, she didn’t. Thus she finds herself tangled in a messy, dangerous, forbidden love story and face-to-face with a madman hell-bent on revenge. The series has been compared to Fatal Attraction, Single White Female, and Basic Instinct.

The Water Series follows the shady love story of an unconventional married couple—he’s an assassin—she kills for fun. It has been compared to a crazier book version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Also, Dexter.

Around The Bend is a heart-pounding standalone, which traces the journey of a well-to-do suburban housewife, and her life as it unravels, thanks to the secrets she keeps. If she were the only one with things she wanted to keep hidden, then maybe it wouldn’t have turned out so bad. But she wasn’t.

The With You Series at its core is a deep love story about unlikely friends who travel the world; trying to find themselves, together and apart. Packed with drama and adventure along with a heavy dose of suspense, it has been compared to The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and Love, Rosie.

The Social Affair is an intense standalone about a timeless couple who find themselves with a secret admirer they hadn’t bargained for. For fans of the anti-heroine and stories told in unorthodox ways, the novel explores what can happen when privacy is traded for convenience. It is reminiscent of films such as One Hour Photo and Play Misty For Me.
