JAKE
“You want to know why I train? It’s because it’s the only time I’m not thinking about Tyler and the fact that I killed him.”

Jake Pennington is a hockey super star. Hot. Rich. Gorgeous. And super talented. But when a series of personal tragedies rock his world, Jake’s life is ripped apart and he is brought to his knees. Broken and completely devastated, he retreats to his family cabin in Canada desperate to forget the world and something he once knew as happiness.

MACKENZIE
“My therapist would say it was me trying to reclaim my life back. To recapture the girl I had once been—frightened of nothing and living life on a whim.”

Mackenzie Eden is battling her own demons. Following a horrific incident in college, Mackenzie throws herself into her job as a means to outrun her pain and her litany of phobias. When her path crosses with Jake Pennington she sees a way to bring them both out of the darkness and back into the light.

Only, Jake’s not buying it. He doesn’t want a sports agent and he doesn’t want a hockey career. Not that Mackenzie is willing to listen. She has a point to prove, not to mention, a bet to win.

Come Undone is a story of two people finding each other in the darkness. A sports romance, it will make you laugh, cry and fall head over heels in love.

EXCERPT:

Mackenzie

When I came out of the bathroom, Jake had changed into a clean pair of sweats that hung low on his slim hips. He was shirtless and when he turned around, his spectacular torso came into view. I stopped in my tracks. Holy hell!

He grinned when he saw me in his flannel shirt.

I shifted self-consciously from one foot to the other. “I guess I was thinking it would be something a little more . . . hockeyish.” I said, holding down the short hem.

He rolled his eyes. “Because that’s what we hockey players do—save our hockey jerseys for sleepovers.”

I exhaled deeply, wondering about the sleeping arrangements. There was only one bed.

As if he could read my mind, Jake said, “Relax, Z. I’ll take the couch.”

It was a good, decent offer in theory. But in practice, it was a frustrating fail. Jake was way too big for the squeaky two-seater sofa, and every time he tried to get comfortable the springs moaned and groaned beneath his weight.

Lying rigid in his comfortable bed, I finally had enough and sat up. “Oh, for Christ’s sake, you can hop into bed with me.”

But Jake decided to play the martyr. “I’m fine. I will fall asleep soon.”

“When? Dawn?” I sighed. “Will you please just come and share this bed with me, Jake?”

The two-seater sofa wheezed as he sat up. “Fine. But just so you know, I’m not having sex with you.”

I watched him cross the room. “You’re hysterical.”

“I mean it. I’m not that type of guy,” he said, standing next to the bed in all his six-pack glory.

“Trust me, I’m not that type of girl.” I sank back into the pillow. “You’re completely safe with me.”

The mattress sank beside me as Jake climbed in and moved about until he was comfortable.

Awkwardness hung between us as we both lay there and stared up at the ceiling.

“Want to cuddle?” Jake finally asked, totally breaking the awkwardness between us.

I broke into laughter but threw a spare pillow at him as a warning. “Stay on your side. I warn you, I bite.”

He shoved the pillow I’d thrown at him behind his head. “Now you’re just coming on to me.”

I chuckled. “Pervert.”

He looked over and grinned, and goddamn if I didn’t want to kiss him.

I quickly turned away to study the ceiling.

Yep. I was in trouble.

Author Bio:

I have always written stories for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first book when I was five years old. It was called ‘The Goodies’ and it was a short story about driving to the shops to get some milk. Needless to say, it was a very short book and hardly the page turner. It was also illustrated in orange felt tip pen because it was the only felt tip pen left in the pencil case that wasn’t dried up and useless.

My first attempt at writing romance was in high school when my athletic ambitions were replaced with Sunday sessions in my bestfriends bedroom, smoking cigarettes and writing smut about the hot guy at school. They were dreadfully crude stories. Lots of awkward fumblings in the dark or a series of awful first kisses. They were also very straight forward. Very straight to the point. Because I didn’t have a clue about what I was talking about. And I used terrible words such as “shaft”, “her moist warmth” and “velvet cavern”…yeah, they were awesome!

In following years I wisely gave up the cigarettes, became Mum to the “best kid in the world” and married a vastly understanding and supportive soul who tolerated the complete absence of my inner domestic goddess. Through a lot of trial and error, I think I may have started to write stories other people would want to read … without an orange felt tip pen in sight…

Oh … and you can find me in Australia.

Blog Tour: 4 Stars for Scored by Marquita Valentine

Title: Scored
Author: Marquita Valentine
Publication Date: June 20th, 2017
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Scored, a sexy all-new STANDALONE from Marquita Valentine is available now!!!

Dallas Drake has a big salary and an even bigger…ego…and he’s not afraid to use either of them to his advantage. As infamous as he is attractive, Dallas has all the equipment necessary to bring home the win.

The first time I met him, I was in handcuffs.
The second, he saved me when I fell off a ladder.

Now? Now we’re working together to plan a charity event.

I may not be interested in what Dallas has to offer, but as the game goes on, I’m becoming more open to his passes.
Is he looking for the win, or just determined to score?

My Review:

4 Stars!

Ok, please don’t hurt me, but I have to be honest. It took me some time to really get into this book. I didn’t really like Dallas or Paige. I got to a point and convinced myself to read just one more chapter. If it didn’t get better, then I would DNF the book (which I very, very rarely do). Well, low and behold, it got better… and then I couldn’t stop reading!

Dallas is a pro-football player–sexy, cocky and has a fan club called Dallas Dolls. I know, right?! Paige is a “quirky” (her word, not mine. Read goofball) librarian with a whole host of issues when it comes to romoance. These two are complete opposites. Dallas is attracted to Paige from the get go. Paige blows him off because her sister is his PR rep and has warned her off him. Does he pursue her anyway? Sort of. Not really. Not until the QB makes this weird bet where Dallas has to date a good girl and if he does then the QB will mentor/coach the back up QB. That part didn’t flow well with me, because in my brain it didn’t really make sense and the bet wasn’t really even an issue.

However, once Paige and Dallas really get into their relationship, it turns out Dallas is good guy and Paige is freak in the bedroom. It was so backwards I couldn’t help but love it. If fact, the whole story is backwards. The conflict is completely backwards from the usual romance novel conflict. That, right there, was what sold me. I loved that Valentine told this story outside the usual confines of a romance novel. I liked that the characters only appeared a certain way, because once we really get to know them, they are so much more.

So, if you find yourself in my situation and unsure of how you feel about the book, just keep reading. It moves along a great pace, the characters will grow on you and the ending… swoon!

Excerpt:

The one good piece of advice my mom gave me concerning men is that their egos are huge yet fragile and it takes the delicate, yet strong touch of a woman to handle them.
Leave it to a man I know only by reputation to drive that point home.
Dallas sits in my office, an ice pack on his lip and the back of his head. To be nice, and since it was my fault he’s in pain in the first place, I’m holding the one on his head, so he can have at least one hand free.
“Sorry,” I say for what has to be the tenth time in the past twenty minutes. “I didn’t get to explain myself before, but I wasn’t laughing at you…well, it was at you, but not your pain. Pain is not funny. When I fell out of a tree and broke my wrist at the growth plate, I laughed the whole way there because that’s the only way I could deal with the pain. Finley didn’t order to me stop either.”
Dallas glances at me, his normally warm eyes icy. “Not sure how that helps.”
“Hopefully, it lets you know that I’m not laughing all willy-nilly.”
“Willy-nilly,” he mutters. “Who says willy-nilly?”
“I do, and to be honest, you’re not that soft. It actually hurt to fall on you.”
He arches a brow. “You weren’t exactly a pile of feathers.”
“Yeah… that’s not helping either.” I take the ice pack away and gently inspect the back of his head. “There’s a tiny,” he hisses, “bump here, but um, I’m sure if you go to the doctor that you’ll get fixed up in time for your next game.”
“You do realize that if I have a concussion, I can’t play this week.”
Slowly, I shake my head. “I didn’t know that.” Now I feel even worse for freaking out when I fell off the ladder. The dang thing is only three feet off the ground. I wasn’t falling to my death or into a pit of snakes.
I shiver.
Pushing away the thoughts of snakes and pits, I focus on Dallas. Although, I plan on making it up to him, I do need to say something about his sneaky ways.
“This could have been avoided altogether if you hadn’t sneaked up on me.”
His jaw works. “I spoke to let you know I was there, so I wasn’t sneaking up on you.”
This time, I’m the one arching a brow. “Next time, do you mind waiting until you’re standing on the ladder with me, or I don’t know… wait until I’m done with said ladder before scaring me to death?”
Dallas tosses the ice pack on my desk. “I guess you have a point.”
He’s agreeing with me? From my Google snooping, or Snoogling as I like to call it, everything about Dallas screams he is a cocky, confident man who has been known to argue with a referee a time or two. Then again, according to the article I read, Dallas argued with the ref over not throwing a flag for unnecessary roughness due to player being tackled after the whistle was blown. That kind of behavior, the other player’s, I mean, is considered very poor sportsmanship and worth some sort of penalization.
So maybe he was right to argue… and maybe I’m wrong to assume the worst about him. Even Finley says he’s not that bad, which for her is practically an endorsement.
But not for us to date—I’m not that stupid.
Or am I…?
“Is there any way I can make it up to you?” I ask. Yes, that is a hopeful tone in my voice. I do want to go out with him, try something new, and see what happens. Besides, it’s not like he’s going to ask me out again. That ship has sailed based on his grumpiness.
“Have drinks with me tonight at 451,” he says.
The ice pack I’m holding plops onto his head, and he grunts. “Sorry. Dang it.” I grab the pack and toss it onto my desk, where it slides precariously close to the edge. “Yes, I’d love to have drinks with you. My treat, of course, since I’m the cause of your injury and… you can send me any outstanding bills.”
“Why would I do that? You didn’t make me try to save you, and I sure as hell could have finessed my approach better.”
“Drinks only, then?”
“Appetizers, too. My treat.” His infamous grin curves his lips. “Don’t want you to think I’m trying to take advantage of you due to an empty stomach.”
So smooth. I eye him. “You might want to get your head looked at first because I’m pretty sure that alcohol and concussions don’t play nice together.”
He salutes me. “Will do.”
I fist my hands on my hips. “Did you come by here to see me, or to see the event space?”
He bites the unbruised side of his lip. “Would it bother you if I said both?”
My stomach flips at his answer. “No. I like honesty.”
“Then you’re going to love this,” he says with a serious look in his eyes that is in direct opposition of his tone, “because I need you to help me win a bet so a fellow teammate can get some mentoring.”
Intrigued, I reach across my desk and drag my office chair around. The floor is smooth and the feet have wheels, so it’s relative easy to do. Plus, I’m pretty sure Dallas is checking out my butt right now and I kind of like it.
Plopping down, I cross my legs and lean forward. “Tell me more.”
“You might not like it,” he warns.
“Do we have to kill anyone?”
His brows shoot up to his hairline. “No, but it’s kind of scary and insulting that you’d go there first.”
“Had to be asked.” I shrug.

LOVE ISN’T A GAME . . .
I’ve given up everything for the chance to play major league baseball. Everything. Now I’m so close I can practically hear the crowd chanting my name. There’s nothing that could take my dream away from me . . .
Unless I lose focus. And Ainsley Burke is the most beautiful, distracting woman I’ve ever met. When I’m with her, I can’t think of anything else.
But no matter how much I want Ainsley, there’s no room for love in my game plan. I can give her a quick tour of the bases, but that’s it. Then I have to let her go. If she wants to think I’m a love ’em and leave ’em player, fine.
All dreams require sacrifice. I just wish this one didn’t mean tearing out my own heart.

My Review:

4 Stars!

This happens every single time I read a book by Heidi McLaughlin, I get completely sucked in and end up in a book hangover. Which is a good thing, people!

This second book in the Boys of Summer series about some sexy baseball players was good, really good. McLaughlin seems to have added depth to these characters that wasn’t necessarily there in the first book. Plus there was humor and I like some humor in my romances. Sometimes too deep is just too deep, but McLaughlin has done a great job of balancing out the deep with some fun. There real stars of the book are Cooper and Ainsley. Cooper is relatable with big goals and realistic worries trying to deal with making big decisions. Ainsley is dealing with some major baggage, but still manages to be this likable girl with a kind heart.

I think this book will appeal to anyone who is a romance fan and especially those who love sports romances. You can’t lose with these characters and the depth of the writing is spot on!

Excerpt:

“Where are we going?” I ask. I turn my ball cap around to prevent it from flying away since her convertible top is down and it looks like we’re heading toward the parkway.
“I thought we’d go to the beach.”
“Isn’t that like thirty minutes away?”
Ainsley glances at me quickly before turning back and focusing on the road. “Do you have a curfew or something?”
I shake my head. “Nope, drive on.” I may not have a curfew, but six a.m. comes very early, and it’s our last practice before we start pre-season play. I suppose, since I went without much sleep in college, one night now isn’t going to hurt me. Besides, it’s for a good cause. I’m into Ainsley, and if she wants to take me to the beach, I’m going to let her.
She turns up the radio and starts singing along to the song. I know it as well so I join in, and before I know it, we’re having our own karaoke party while we’re cruising down the road. When we hit a stoplight, I expect her to stop singing, but she doesn’t, and the people pulled up along the side of us start singing too.
Before I know it, we’re at the beach. The car is shut off, the music has stopped, and the only thing you can hear are the waves crashing onto the shore.
“Coming here at night affords me the ability to sit and think without too many people around.”
“Is it safe?” I ask.
“I don’t know. I never thought about that. I suppose in some aspects it’s not, but there are always a few other people around so…” She gets out of her car before finishing her sentence. She shouldn’t walk the beach alone at night, but who am I to tell her otherwise? I quickly follow her, catching up with her in the sand.
We walk side by side until the dry sand turns wet, and then we both sit down.
“When I was little, my mom used to bring me here all the time. I’d swim and play while she read her book or she’d come in the water with me. It’s funny, when you’re a kid, you have no worries in life, but the minute you become an adult, everything changes.”
I wish I could relate. “My life was the opposite. I’ve always had the pressure to succeed in baseball on my shoulders. My dad, he was strict about everything. In fact, if he knew I was out here now and not sleeping, he’d have something to say about that.”
“That’s sad.”
Shrugging, I slip off my socks and sneakers, burying my toes into the cold sand. “It is, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without that kind of structure.”
“Do you like playing baseball?” Ainsley slips off her shoes and pulls her legs to her chest, wrapping her arms around them tightly.
“I love it. I love everything about the game.”
“Do you ever wish you had done something else?”
I think about her question and wonder what else I could’ve done. If my dad and I hadn’t turned to tossing the ball in the backyard, where would we be? For us, it was therapeutic and a way for me to express how angry and hurt I was that my mom had died. The harder I threw, the better I felt. The more my dad cringed when he caught the ball, the more satisfying it was that he was hurting as much as I was.
“I don’t know what else I would’ve done, honestly. Baseball is what I know. My dad used it as a tool to help me cope with my mom’s passing, and before I knew it, I was trying out for these elite baseball clubs and making all-star teams. College and major league scouts would come watch my games in high school, and I thought ‘Wow, this could be a career for me.’ I was drafted out of high school but chose to go to college first. I wanted something to fall back on in case baseball didn’t work out.”
“What’s your degree in?” She turns and looks at me. The moon is casting enough of a glow that I can make out her facial features. Now would be the perfect time to lean over and kiss her, but I have to keep reminding myself that it’s not what she wants from me.
“Well, the only thing that made sense.”
Ainsley holds her hand up. “Don’t tell me, it’s something to do with sports.”
I nod, holding back laughter. “Yeah, broadcasting. I figure I can become a commentator or something when I retire.”
“Interesting,” she says, turning back toward the ocean.
I lean into her, bumping her with my shoulder. “Don’t be like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like I took the easy way out with my degree or my career isn’t the same as a doctor or whatever.”
“Is it though?”
“Baseball is America’s game. It doesn’t know social class, race, or any other classification. It’s a game every one can play and afford to participate in. You don’t have to have straight A’s to go to college to play ball. Hell, most players come to the majors right out of high school. It’s a game for everyone.”
“A game that you make millions of dollars at.”
“It’s no different than being an actor. We bring entertainment to people.” I counter her claim.
“I don’t like this argument,” she says.
“Me neither. I think we should talk about something else.”
“Like what?” she asks.
Taking her hand in mind, I kiss the top of it before meeting her gaze. “Like you going out with me.”
She shakes her head.
“I know, you don’t date athletes, so think of me as a sports broadcaster.” I waggle my eyebrows at her, and she laughs.
“You’re hard to resist, Cooper Bailey.”
With those words, I pull her closer. “Then stop resisting me, Ainsley.” This is my chance, and I take it. My lips brush against hers lightly, testing her resolve. She’s either going to punch me, push me away, or let me continue to kiss her.

When the family dog trots in with my diaphragm in its mouth—in
front of my date, his parents, and his adorable little girl—you would think I’d
hit rock bottom.
WRONG.
Let’s back this up a sec…
Brendan Daniels is the sexiest man alive. The captain of the
Badger’s NHL team is also clever, kind, funny, and was my good friend…until we
cruised out of the friend zone one weekend with a red-hot fling. Come Monday
morning, I wanted to keep riding the Big O train to happy town, but Brendan
wanted someone who was “stepmom” material.
A.K.A, not me, apparently.
The problem? I’m crazy in love with him and his daughter. So when
he asks me to be his pretend girlfriend for a long weekend with his former
in-laws, I say yes. We’re still friends, after all, and friends don’t let
friends fake it alone.

Laura Collins is the last woman I should be thinking about taking
in the back seat of my car, in the woods behind my in-laws’ house, or in a
hotel room where we’re sharing one very small, very squeaky bed.
I need a steady, stable influence for my daughter, not a fling
with this too wild, too young, too impulsive red head. So what if she’s
beautiful and intense and passionate and has the biggest heart I’ve ever known?
I don’t want to fall in love. I really don’t. The whole “pretend
girlfriend” thing was supposed to solve my problems, buy me a little more time.
But when it comes to Laura?

Hell,
maybe I’m just not cut out for faking it.

But one thing’s for sure: Brick can’t block this shot straight to his heart.

My Review:

4 Stars!
Who doesn’t love a first time father/bad boy hockey romance?  No one, that’s who!
When a five year old girl shows up on Brick’s doorstep with a note claiming he is her father and that she is all alone, he doesn’t exactly react well to the news.  By chance, Amelia ends up as Brick’s nanny.  It is supposed to be temporary.  They don’t exactly hit it off what with Brick hitting on Amelia and Amelia seeing how Brick acts.
It was hard to like Brick in the beginning.  He was cocky and a bit obnoxious.  I did recognize his issues and gave him that, but it took me nearly half the book to really warm up to him.  Amelia, on the other hand, I liked right away.  She was strong, opinionated and didn’t back down from Brick or his behavior.  The star of the book is Macy, Brick’s 5 year old.  Davenport did a great job of writing a scared little girl who just wants to be loved.
I’m not a fan of third person storytelling in romances, but this one was done well.  I felt connected to the characters and could feel their emotions as I read.  I rooted for Brick and Amelia and I wanted little Macy to have the family she so desperately wanted.
A great sports romance!

Win the game. Lose your heart.

Everyone knows who I am and that I could have any female fan I want. That’s supposed to be the “perk” of playing left field for the Boston Renegades. But I don’t want just any woman; I want her.

She should be just another face in the crowd, but I can’t stop thinking about the one night we spent together-and her look of regret the morning after.

Because Saylor Blackwell is the kind of woman who haunts a man. Smart, sexy as hell, and one of the best managers in the business. She’s every ballplayer’s dream woman. And I’d do anything to make things right with her.

I’m done sitting on the bench when it comes to Saylor Blackwell. Time to swing for the fences.

My Review:

4.5 star!

Heidi McLaughlin hits one out of the park with the newest in The Boys of Summer series! Filled with emotion, drama and even a little suspense, Grand Slam is a must read!

If you’ve been reading the series, you’ll know Travis Kidd is a player both on and off the field. He is unapologetic about his ways until one night changes everything. In that one night, something bad and something equally good happen.

Heidi McLaughlin does this book right! She doesn’t force the story, but instead let’s it play out naturally allowing you to fall in love with the characters and root for their happy ending!

Get your hands on this book! You’re going to love it!

New Release: 4 Stars for Fighting for Redemption by Nicole Flockton

Title: Fighting for Redemption
Series: The Elite: Book Four
Author: USA Today Bestselling Author, Nicole Flockton
Genre: Adult, Sports Romance
Published: May 23, 2017

From USA Today Bestselling Author, Nicole Flockton, the final book in The Elite Series.

Bad Boy Brett Hunter is on a downward spiral after a poor performance at the Rio Olympic Games. His sponsors are threatening to drop him and trouble seems to find him wherever he goes. He’s comfortable with his bad boy image, it’s what he deserves after what he’s done. The last thing he wants to do is change the public’s perception of him, but his agent tells him, change his image or lose his sponsors.

Cassandra Fielder doesn’t like working with diva athletes – she’s been there, done that and has the divorce decree to go with it. When she finds out her new client is Olympian Brett Hunter, for the first time in her career she wants to tell her boss no, unfortunately, saying no isn’t an option. What she isn’t prepared for is the unexpected attraction flaring between them. She has no plans to play on that particular field again. As she spends time with Brett, she begins to see there is more to him than what he shows the public. But why is he trying so hard to hang on to his bad boy image?

Being with Cassandra has Brett facing old foes and a past he is desperately trying to forget. When the truth comes out, a fledging love is put to the test. Can it survive or has trust been irrevocably shattered?

My Review:

4 Stars!
Brett Hunter gets his redemption!!!
I have loved Brett since book one, where things aren’t well for him.  Now, he has pretty much hit bottom.  No publicist, an agent threatening to drop him, and really no friends.  When his agent goes to bat for him, a new publicist is hired to clean up his image.  Enter Cassandra.  She can hold her own with bad boy athletes.  When she meets Brett, sparks fly and suddenly he is all she can think about.
This was hard to read at times, not because of the story or the writing, but because I wanted Brett to be happy.  Cassandra was good for him and I loved how their relationship developed.
Fighting for Redemption has all the right pieces to make a great read!

USA Today Bestselling Author, Nicole Flockton writes sexy contemporary romances, seducing you one kiss at a time as you turn the pages. Nicole likes nothing better than taking characters and creating unique situations where they fight to find their true love.

On her first school report her teacher noted “Nicole likes to tell her own stories”. It wasn’t until after the birth of her first child and after having fun on a romance community forum that she finally decided to take the plunge and write a book.

Apart from writing Nicole is busy looking after her very own hero – her wonderfully supportive husband, and two fabulous kids. She also enjoys watching sports and, of course, reading.

An NFL player with a secret past, and the one woman with the power to turn his world inside out…
Former actress Emma Rothschild is partying in Vegas in disguise. But I’m not fooled. Five years ago, I knew that body better than my own, and I haven’t forgotten a single detail—not the curve of her hip beneath my hand or the hitch in her breath when I kiss her neck.
When Emma’s unexpectedly left alone in Sin City, I agree to spend the weekend with her. As friends. Why not? If I can knock down the toughest guys in the NFL, I’m strong enough to keep my hands to myself, even if she is the sexiest woman I’ve ever met.
Emma is part of my past—years so shrouded in secrets that not even my best friends know the truth about who I am. I’m a single dad now and not interested in revisiting my old ways or trying to win back the only woman I ever let close enough to break my heart.
But this is Vegas, where all bets are off, and with Emma, nothing ever goes as planned…

My Review:

4 Stars!!

Keegan gets his book!!!!

Nope.  Not excited.  Okay, I was totally excited to read this.  The whole baby storyline and then Keegan being Keegan and the second chance romance.  Boom!  I was hooked.

Lexi Ryan (a fellow Hoosier, so I love her already) did not disappoint with Keegan and Emma.  I am going to give very little detail because spoilers suck.  Suffice it to say, Lexi Ryan has written an emotional ride of love, lies, secrets, redemption, second chances and did I mention love?  Lots of twists and turns here.  I also like that she expanded beyond the college.

Another great edition to The Blackhawk Boys series!  Keep ’em coming, Lexi!

Excerpt

“You’re too beautiful,” I tell her. I run my thumb along her jaw. “Too fucking beautiful.”“I’ve missed you. You’re the best man I’ve ever met.”

My stomach clenches and I shake my head. “Don’t think that. It’s a lie. It’s what I wanted you to believe. Don’t bring that lie into tonight.”

“How was it a lie?” She grins up at me, and I know a full confession would erase all the happiness from her face.

“When we were together before, I wasn’t the man you thought I was. I wasn’t good.” It’s the closest to the truth I’ve ever given anyone about my past.

“So you don’t want me believing you’re good?”

I pull her hips tightly against me as I exhale in frustration. She still thinks this is some kind of joke. “I’m different now, but then…”

She lifts onto her toes and flicks her tongue against my ear. “Don’t be so different. I like you a little bad.”

I groan and stop dancing. I don’t know how much longer I can do this without diving over the line. “Is that permission to stop being your friend?” I’m obsessed with knowing if she tastes as sweet as I remember. And if I swipe my tongue over the sensitive spot beneath her ear, will she gasp like she always did?

She shrugs and grins, and the dance floor tilts off balance. It’s crowded, and we’re surrounded by writhing bodies, cocooned in the crowd. I turn her in my arms so her back is to my front and settle my hand against the soft skin of her midriff. She arches her back and rubs against me.

I sweep her hair to the side, and when I press my lips to the long, smooth column of her neck, she trembles against me.

“Are you okay?” I ask against her ear. “Is this okay?”

“I—I’m not sure…”

“Tell me what you want. Not five years ago. Not tomorrow. What do you want right now?”

She reaches back and threads her fingers through my hair to guide my mouth back to her neck.

I don’t hesitate. I kiss and suck on that tender skin while we move to the beat.

The rest of the room fades and one song blurs into the next. A waitress comes by selling shots, and I buy two, one for each of us, and we lock eyes as we throw them back. At some point, I’m vaguely aware of Bailey checking on me, but my focus is one hundred percent on Emma, on this night that takes me back to when I was eighteen and so fucking in love it hurt. Tonight, Emma isn’t the woman who once broke my heart. She isn’t the girl who wrote me off with a simple goodbye note and apologies I didn’t want. Tonight, she’s a dream, my fantasy in the flesh, my reward for surviving the hardest year of my whole life.

When her face begins to blur, I realize I’m way more drunk than I ever intended. I need to sober up or I’m not going to remember a minute of this night. “Want to get out of here?”

She nods, takes my hand, and leads me out of the bar and down the hall to the elevators. My watch reads a quarter past two.

“Let’s get some food,” I suggest, but at the same moment, an elevator dings and the doors slide open.

Emma grabs my hand and drags me inside. “I don’t want food,” she says, punching a button.

I spin her around and press her against the wall. “What do you want, Em?” I drop my hand to her side to skim my knuckles over her skirt, and she widens her stance to part her thighs. “Fuck,” I whisper. I shouldn’t do this. Not here, not when any moment someone could join us on the elevator, not when we’re both so damn drunk it’s a wonder we can stand upright. But shouldn’t is so much weaker than want, and I want to touch her more than I want anything right now.

I’m faintly aware of the soft beeping of the passing floors as I slide my hand up her skirt and cup her between her legs. She gasps, and I rub my fingers over the damp lace of her panties, teasing her swollen flesh.

When the elevator stops and the doors slide open, she grabs my wrist and holds me still. “Please,” she whispers in my ear. “Please. Don’t stop.” Then she tilts her hips and rocks against my hand. I couldn’t refuse her if every person in the hotel was watching us.
