My Review

3.5 Stars!

What the holy heck did I just read?!

Dark, twisty, and did I mention dark? This highly suspenseful read was intense! You get just enough kernels of information at the beginning to set the story and then V. F. Mason really takes off and the rest is a thrill ride.

If you like dark romantic suspense then this is for you.

About the Author:
V.F.Mason always loved reading books and had quite a few fights with her momma over the genre she liked (romance, duh!) She studied filmmaking and thought that would feed her desire for stories, but that didn’t happen. Finally, when she was tired of all those voices in her head, she sat down and wrote a book. It was a huge decision to make and she thanks her friends and family for supporting her in it. When she is not writing, she can be found with her friends doing all sorts of crazy things or reading recent romance books that were written by her favorite authors.

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Roman by Heidi McLaughlin & Amy Briggs!

Title: Roman
Series: The Clutch Series: Book One
Authors: Heidi McLaughlin and Amy Briggs
Genre: Vampire Romance

Release Date: March 29, 2018

What a fabulous collaboration! Amy and Heidi rocked the paranormal romance world venturing into the unknown with their first go ahead. Roman was so much than I expected.” ~ Amazon Review

Amy Briggs and Heidi McLaughlin are a duo to watch! Roman was intense, romantic, sexy, and beautiful, but it was also so much more than a love story.” ~ Amazon Review

Everything about him tells her to stay away, yet she can’t seem to get the vampire out of her mind.

For Roman, humans are the bane of his existence always having to follow their rules. In all his years, he’s never needed one, until now.

For Fiona, vampires are off limits, evil members of society, until the one known as Roman crosses her path and shows her he’s no different than her.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, but the fact that Heidi McLaughlin wrote it was enough for me to want to read it. I was pleasantly surprised. But, I am picky about my PNRs and this one had less PNR than I would like, but the romance aspect was pretty spot on, so I’m good.

Roman is a vampire who has little use for humans, until he needs one to get approval from the gaming commission so that he can purchase and open a casino. He is alpha, has a temper and is sexy! Fiona is the human Roman needs to help him. Her father is the head of the gaming commission. Roman’s opinion of Fiona is rather low in the beginning, but she certainly grows on him. I liked Roman. Fiona, not so much.

The story flows nicely and is entertaining. It isn’t what you normally would think of as a vampire story. There really isn’t much danger. The book leans much more toward the romance side.

A good read that kept me entertained, but was a little lacking.

BLURB:

Welcome to River Hill, where the only thing more intoxicating than the wine is the man who makes it.

With movie roles for “curvy best friend” drying up fast, actress Angelica Travis is happy to be leaving Hollywood behind for a project she’s truly passionate about: renovating an historic bed and breakfast in peaceful wine country. She’s got plans and power tools ready, but an inconvenient attraction to her obnoxious new neighbor is NOT on the agenda.

Winemaker Noah Bradstone wants nothing more than to cultivate his grapes and win awards for his wine. But when construction on the B&B next door threatens his vines, Noah goes on a rampage – and comes up hard against the sexiest starlet he’s ever seen. Exactly the sort of woman he’s vowed never to get involved with again.

Angelica and Noah might be able to resolve their differences over a glass of some very fine wine, but when her opportunity at breakout stardom comes calling, all bets are off.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

A little bit opposites attract and a whole bunch of sexy fun. Noah and Angelica steam up the pages with their witty banter and intimate moments. The natural progression from neighbors who don’t like each other to friends to more was seamless and engaging. Noah is all man – alpha, grumpy, but with a big heart underneath that exterior. Angelica is just happy-go-lucky and she lives life to the fullest. They learn from each other. They really end up bringing the best out in each other. I really enjoyed the writing from this team and look forward to more.

New Release ~ 3.5 Stars for Advanced Physical Chemistry

Title: Advanced Physical Chemistry:
A Romantic Comedy
Series: Chemistry Lessons #3
Author: Susannah Nix
Genre: Romantic Comedy
 Release Date: March 16, 2018
Blurb
After four
lousy boyfriends in a row, chemical engineer Penny Popplestone swears off men
until she can figure out why they keep cheating on her. But her no-men
resolution hits a snag when the mysterious and superhumanly hot barista at her
favorite coffee shop strikes up a friendship with her.
Penny strives to keep things platonic, but when Caleb gives her the kiss of her
life, she realizes he wants to be more than just friends. Tired of always being
“good little Penny,” she throws caution to the wind and pursues a no-strings
fling with the hottie barista. It’s not like they have anything in common
beyond scorching physical chemistry, so what does she have to lose?

Only her heart.

Now, this fanfic-reading, plus-size heroine faces an unsolvable problem. What
do you do when being apart is unbearable…but being together is impossible?

Advanced Physical Chemistry is the
third in a series of standalone rom-coms featuring geeky heroines who work in
STEM fields.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

A fun, very sweet, friends-to-friends-with-benefits romance with a quirky heroine and a swoonworthy hero.

Penny has been described by a lot of other reviewers as nerdy or geeky. I didn’t read her that way. I read her as quirky, sure; but just because she was in a STEM field, I didn’t automatically assume she was a geek. However, in the beginning, she was definitely awkward, but then again, aren’t we all some times? Caleb was the hunky barista. His development was less than Penny’s, but his character didn’t really need it. The book is a romance, but it is also more. It is Penny’s awakening or transition, if you will, to self-awareness and self-sufficiency when it comes to her relationships. Of course, when you pose a no strings attached relationship, there is bound to be trouble.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and will read more from Nix.

Excerpt
“Can we
talk?” Penny tilted her head toward the back. “Privately.” Was it her
imagination, or did Caleb’s eyes widen momentarily in fear?
He wiped
his hands on a dishtowel and nodded. “Sure.”
She trailed
after him down the back hallway, past the restrooms. He halted in front of the
office door and turned around to face her. It was quieter back here. The voices
of the businessmen had faded to a dull murmur, blending with the white noise
hum of the refrigerator case at the end of the hall.
Neither of
them spoke. They were standing close enough that she could see the gold in his
eyes. As they stared at one another, the memory of the kiss floated in the air
between them. Their fevered breaths. The way he’d moaned into her mouth. Penny
licked her lips.
“I owe you
an apology,” Caleb said.
The words
punctured her thin bubble of hope. “I see.”
“I
shouldn’t have kissed you like that.”
“Why not?”
she heard herself say a little too loudly.
He flinched
at the challenge in her tone. “What?”
“Why
shouldn’t you have kissed me?”
The bell on
the front door jangled, and there was a murmur of voices as more customers came
in. Malik was out front. He could handle them.
Caleb
shuffled his feet like he was itching to escape. “Um…”
“Do you
have a girlfriend?” Penny asked.
He shook
his head at the floor. “No, nothing like that.”
She rested
her hands on her hips. “Did you not mean to do it? Am I supposed to believe it
was some sort of accident? That you tripped and fell onto my face?”
“No, of
course not, I—”
“Because
I’m trying to understand why you’d do something like that and then run off and
leave me standing there. And why you’re apologizing now for kissing me instead
of for running off.”
“I’m sorry
for that part too,” he said quietly.
“It wasn’t
very nice.”
“You’re
right, it wasn’t. I’m sorry.” God, he was beautiful when he was being contrite.
It made it impossible to think straight.
Penny
stared at his collarbone, which was also stupidly attractive, but not quite as
distracting as his face. “So why did you do it?”
“Run off?
Or kiss you?”
“Both.
Either. Why are you being so weird about all of it?”
“Um.” He
shifted his weight, lowering his eyes to the floor. If she hadn’t been standing
between him and escape, he might have actually bolted like a horse.
She crossed
her arms. “Did you not want to kiss me?”
“No, I…” He
trailed off, rubbing his palms on his thighs.
Penny
waited. She was prepared to wait all day if that was what it took.
He looked
up. “I’ve wanted to kiss you for a long time.”
That
stopped her in her tracks. “W—what?”
His eyes
looked into hers. “You heard me.”
Something
burned in her chest, constricting her voice to a whisper. “But you don’t even
like me.”
“That’s not
true.” He looked pained.
How long
was a long time? Since last summer when he’d started working here? Did that
mean—could she have been dating Caleb instead of Kenneth? She tried to
picture it. Caleb asking her on a date, taking her out to dinner. Smiling
across the table as he tried to charm her, hoping for a goodnight kiss at the
end of the evening. She couldn’t even picture the smiling part, much less the
rest of it.
She tried
to clear her throat and made a choking sound instead. “You acted like
you didn’t like me.”
“I was
trying to keep my distance.” His expression turned reproachful. “You had a
boyfriend.”
“Who was a
cheating jerk. Which you could have told me at any time.” If Caleb had ever
given her even the slightest hint he was actually interested in her, she would
have dropped Kenneth like the flaming bag of dog poop he’d turned out to be.
“I was
afraid you’d hate me if I was the one to tell you.”
Unbelievable.
Literally, it was impossible to believe this man who’d barely acknowledged her
existence had actually been attracted to her all this time. It was
inconceivable, and not in the Princess Bride sense of the word.
And yet…he had
kissed her. It hadn’t been a half-hearted kiss either. That was a serious kiss
he’d given her. Deadly serious.
Penny
swallowed. “I don’t have a boyfriend anymore.”

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Sweet Revenge by Natalie Wrye!

About SWEET REVENGE

Men. Manuscripts. And Manolos…

I was failing at two of the three.

Dating life aside, when you’re an agent for a successful publishing press, climbing the corporate ladder isn’t your biggest problem… Staying there is.

So, when the biggest football star in the world wants to write a tell-all about his life and career, I put my bid in right at the top.

My only issue?

Mr. Playboy Pro is none other than Colton Evans, my CEO’s step-brother.

A walking wet dream with dark features and an even darker past, I find that behind the fan-favorite smile is an arrogant bastard.

The worst part? I think I like it.

But when getting to the truth of Colton’s sordid story takes an unexpected turn to trouble, everything I love will be on the line, including my job… and my heart.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

I think this one had a ton of potential, but I just couldn’t like the hero, Colton.

Colton grew up poor, while his half-brother grew up rich. His father didn’t acknowledge him. His mother was his father’s mistress and he paid her to go away. Apparently, that gives you license to grow up to be a giant douche canoe. Colton is a rich, football player and wants for nothing. He takes whatever he wants consequences be damned. He sleeps around… a LOT! So, forgive me if I found him a bit too over the top. Oh, and everything single thing he thinks or says is aggressive. In my head, the guy just went around shouting everything.

Ana is Colton’s object of desire and she just so happens to be his hated brother’s sister-in-law, a fact he is well aware of. She, on the other hand, has no idea he is the long lost brother. She’s a literary agent and he has a tell-all book that needs to be promoted. A book that exposes her brother-in-law and sister’s family. Ruh roh, Shaggy.

The writing is really good. It is fast-paced (maybe a little too much at times, but not so much it detracts from the story), clever and witty. While I didn’t like Colton, I did like the witty banter between him and Ana. Ana is pretty sarcastic herself, so sometimes it is a bit overwhelming, but overall I liked their back and forth. The revenge plot was soapy and campy and I loved that. The book sort of steamrolls along but you do get a satisfying HEA in the end, so it’s all worth it.

Not my favorite of Natalie Wrye’s books, but if you can get past Colton’s obnoxiousness then you should find a pretty entertaining read.

About RISKE & REVENGE

Love is the strongest emotion in the world…next to hate.

I knew hate. Had known it since I was seventeen. For me, it was love turned on its head, a product of hurt and fear—twisted, tied up…and placed on the sculpted shoulders of Ethan Riske.

***

Dayton, Tennessee.

Home to the best cow-tipping in the world, the biggest hot dogs, and the lousiest sex.

Or so I’d heard…

They were right about the first two. Ethan Riske proved them wrong about the third and at seventeen, he and I spent a summer under the stars, squeezing our way out of trouble, sweating and panting among the haystacks.

Until he left.

Nine years later, when a huge publishing house tries to buy my small press, I storm into the office of the CEO to find him.

Same cocky grin. Different name.

And suddenly all I can think about is exacting revenge on Ethan Riske for breaking his contract…and my heart.

But there’s someone who wants revenge even more than I do. As I begin to fall for the new Ethan, will the sins of the old one come back to haunt us?

About PERFECT REVENGE

My name is Lukas Griffin, and I put the “cock” in the word “cocky”…amongst other things, of course. The only exception to this rule…is her.

***

I’d simplified my life into a three-part process:
I binged. I screwed. I came…right up until the moments when I would come to.

And I was content with it staying that way.

Until I met her. For the first time. At the engagement party…we both planned.

Mouthy dancer.
Blonde bombshell.
Elena.

My best friend’s soon to be sister-in-law.

Enemies before we’d ever laid eyes on each other, we were a match made in Hell—a cautionary tale of how not to get along.

But when we unwittingly enter a game where enemies are lovers, family can’t be friends and friends become enemies, can we prevent the spark between us from turning into a deadly inferno?

Blog Tour ~ 4 Stars for Dropping In by Carrie Quest!

Today, we have the blog tour for Carrie Quest’s DROPPING IN! Check it—and the free prequel—out today and grab your copy!

Title: Dropping In

Series: A Snow-Crossed Lovers Novel

Release Date: February 8th

About Dropping In:

Natalie Berensen has one short summer to ace her writing class and convince her parents she’s not a hopeless screw-up. No more changing her major once a month, taking time off to travel, or random friends-with-benefits. She doesn’t have time for distractions or hook-ups, not even if her longtime crush is in town for the summer and living in her basement. Who cares if he’s a snowboarding god with six pack abs and a hashtag devoted to his apparently magical penis? She’s not interested.

Until she is.

Ben Easton’s focus and self-discipline is legendary. He’s built a career as a professional snowboarder by training harder than anyone else on the mountain and steering clear of anything that doesn’t take him one step closer to his goal: Olympic gold. Then his best friend crashes in the half-pipe and Ben drops everything to take care of him. No more training. No more competitions. No more snowboarding. It’s over.

He’s back in Boulder to help with Adam’s rehab, not fool around with his little sister’s best friend, no matter how much he loves her laugh or the way her ass looks when she walks up the stairs. There’s no way in hell he’s going anywhere near Natalie.

Until he does.

Contains: a grumpy guard cat with a taste for blood, discussions of Ents as phallic symbols, and plenty of sexy times.

My Review

4 Stars!

This book was fun, sexy and perfect to cuddle up on the couch and settle in. Natalie is kind of a mess, but she is a lovable mess. Ben is sexy, funny and hot as fire! Together, Natalie and Ben grow so much throughout the book. Their very first encounter in the book was laugh out loud funny and ended with a sexy encounter that set in motion the rest of their story. There were a few heartbreaking moments, but in general the book was lighthearted and sexy. I loved Piper and Adam, as well, and I am looking forward to their book. The single best “character” in the book was Chuckles. You’ll have to read to find out who Chuckles is and to enjoy the magic that is Chuckles!

Once that’s done, he’s going to disappear. Snowboarding’s bad boy is tired of the phony photo ops set up by his media mogul father. Getting hounded by reporters and pretending to date supermodels while running errands for Power News cost him the only girl he’s ever loved, and now it’s time to walk away.

Quitting his father will be easy. Bailing on snowboarding will be slightly harder. Getting Belle to forgive him may be impossible, but he has to try.

Isabelle Garland’s Olympic dream died the night a drunk driver plowed into her car and crushed her leg. Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for The Rebound by Winter Renshaw!

The last time I saw Nevada Kane, I was seventeen and he was loading his things into the back of his truck, about to embark on a fourteen-hour drive to the only college that offered him a full ride to play basketball.

I told him I’d wait for him. He promised to do the same.

But life happened. I broke my promise long before he ever broke his. And not because I wanted to.

We never saw each other again …

Until ten years later when Nevada unexpectedly returned to our hometown after an abrupt retirement from his professional basketball career.

Suddenly he was everywhere, always staring through me with that brooding gaze, never returning my smiles or “hellos.”

Over the years, I’d heard that he’d changed. And that despite his multi-million dollar contracts and rampant success, life hadn’t been so kind to him.

He was a widower.

And a single father.

And rumor had it, he’d spent his last ten years trying to forget me, refusing to so much as breathe my name … hating me.

But just like a rebound, he’s back.

And I have to believe everything happens for a reason.

I realize being the new kid makes people give you a second look, but I don’t think it should give them permission to stare at you like you have a second head growing out of your nose. Or a monstrous zit on your chin. Or a period stain on your pants.
At this point it’s all the same.
Not to mention, I don’t think anyone can prepare you for what it feels like to eat lunch alone, like some social reject.
The smell of burnt tater tots makes my stomach churn, and the milk on my tray expires today. I’m pretty sure the “chicken patty on a bun” they gave me is nothing more than pink slime baked to a rock-hard consistency. I’m unwilling to risk chipping a tooth, so I refuse to try it.
Checking my watch for the millionth time, I calculate approximately 3 1/2 hours left until I can go home and tell my parents what an amazing first day I had. That’s what they want to hear anyway. Dad moved us here from California with the promise that we were going to be richer than sin, whatever that means. But if Missouri is such a gold mine then why doesn’t the rest of the world move here? So far, Lambs Grove looks like the kind of place you’d see in some independent film about a mother trying to solve her son’s murder with the help of a crooked police department, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, JK Simmons, and Frances McDormand.
Okay, I’m probably being dramatic.
But this place is pretty lame. I miss the ocean. I miss the constant sunshine and the steady stream of seventy-five degree days. I miss the swaying palm trees.
I miss my friends.
Forcing your kid to move away from the town they’ve grown up in their entire life—in the middle of their sophomore—year is cruel. I don’t care how rich dad says we’re going to get, I’d have rather stayed in Del Mar, driven a rusting Honda, and paid my own way through a technical college if it had meant we didn’t have to move.
And can we talk about my name for a second? Yardley. Everyone here has normal names. Alyssa. Monica. Taylor. Heather. Courtney. If I have to spell my name for someone one more time I’m going to scream. My mom wanted my name to be special and different because apparently she thinks I’m special and different, but naming your daughter Yardley doesn’t make her special. It just makes it so she’ll never find her name on a souvenir license plate.
I’d go by my middle name if it weren’t equally as bad, but choosing between Yardley and Dove is akin to picking your own poison.
Yardley Dove Devereaux.
My parents are cruel.
I rest my case.
I pop a cold tater tot into my mouth and force myself to chew. I’ll be damned if I’m that girl sitting in third block with a stomach growling so loud it drowns out the teacher. I don’t need more people staring.
Pulling my notebook from my messenger bag, I pretend to focus on homework despite the fact that it’s the first day of spring semester and none of my teachers have assigned anything yet, but it’s better than sitting here staring at the block walls of the cafeteria like some loser.
Pressing my pen into the paper, I begin to write:
Monday, January 7, 2008
This day sucks.
The school sucks.
This town sucks.
These people suck.
After a minute, I toss my pen aside and exhale.
“What about me? Do I suck?” A pastel peach lunch tray plops down beside me followed by a raven-haired boy with eyes like honey and a heartbreaker’s smile. My heart flutters in my chest. He’s gorgeous. And I have no idea why he’s sitting next to me. “Nevada.”
“No. California. I’m from Del Mar,” I say, clearing my throat and sitting up straight.
The boy laughs through his perfectly straight nose.
I can’t take my eyes off his dimpled smirk. He can’t take his eyes off me.
“My name,” he says. “It’s Nevada. Like the state. And you are?”
“New,” I say.
He laughs at me again, eyes rolling. “Obviously. What’s your name?”
My cheeks warm. Apparently, I can’t human today. “Yardley.”
“Yardley from California.” He says my name like he’s trying to memorize it as he studies me. I squirm, wanting to know what he’s thinking and why he’s gazing at me like I’m some kind of magnificent creature and not some circus sideshow new girl freak. “What brings you here?”
He pops one of my tator tots between his full lips, grinning while he chews.
Nevada doesn’t look like the boys where I’m from. He doesn’t sound like them either. He isn’t sun kissed with windswept surfer hair. His features are darker, more mysterious. One look at this tall drink of water and I know he’s wise beyond his years. Mischievous and charismatic but also personable.
He’s … everything.
And he’s everything I never expected to come across in a town like this.
A group of girls at the table behind us gape and gawk, whispering and nudging each other. It occurs to me then that this might be a set-up, that this beautiful boy might be talking to this awkward new girl as a dare.
“Ignore them,” he says when he follows my gaze toward the plastic cheerleader squad sitting a few feet away. “They’re just jealous.”
I lift a brow. “Of what?”
He smirks, laughing at me like I’m supposed to ‘get it.’
“What?” I ask. If this is a joke, I want to be in on it. I refuse to add butt-of-the-joke to the list of reasons why this day can go to hell.
“They’re jealous because they think I’m about to ask you out,” he says, licking his lips. Nevada hasn’t taken his eyes off me since the moment he sat down.
“Should I go inform them that they have absolutely no reason to shoot daggers our way?”
His expression fades. “Why would you say that?”
“Because …” I laugh. “You’re not about to ask me out.”
“I’m not?”
I peel my gaze off of him and glance down at my untouched lunch. “Why are you doing this?”
“Why am I doing what? Talking to you? Trying to get the courage to ask you on a date?”
I glance up, studying his golden gaze and trying to determine if he’s being completely serious right now.
“You’ve never seen me before in your life and then you just … plop down next to me and ask me on a date?” I shake my head before rising. If I have to dump my tray and hide in the bathroom until the bell rings, then so be it.
“Where are you going?”
My lips part. “I … I don’t know. I …”
Nevada reaches for me, wrapping his hand around my wrist in a silent plea for me to stay. “Do you have a boyfriend back in California? Is that what this is about?”
“What? No.” This guy is relentless.
“Then go on a date with me,” he says, rising. “Friday.”
“Why?”
His expression fades. “Why?”
The bell rings. Thank God.
“I was new once. So I get it,” he says, fighting another dimpled smirk. God, I could never get tired of looking at a face like his. “And, uh … I think you’re, like, really fucking hot.”
Biting my lower lip and trying my damnedest to keep a straight face, I decide I won’t be won over that easily. It takes a lot more than a sexy smile, some kind words, and a curious glint in his sunset eyes. If he truly wants me … if this isn’t a joke and he honestly thinks I’m “really fucking hot,” he’s going to have to prove it.
“Bye, Nevada,” I say, gathering my things and disappearing into a crowd of students veering toward two giant trash cans.
I don’t wait for him to respond and I don’t turn around, but I feel him watching me—if that’s even possible. There’s this electric energy pulsing through me from the top of my head to the tips of my toes. I’m not sure if it’s excitement or anticipation or the promise of hope … but I can’t deny that it’s real and it’s there.
Making my way to the second floor of Lambs Grove High, I find my English Lit classroom and settle into a seat in the back.
For the tiniest sliver of a second, I imagine the two of us together. We’re laughing and happy and so in love that it physically hurts—the kind of thing I’ve never had with anyone else.
The tardy bell rings and a few more students shuffle in. My teacher takes roll call before beginning his lecture, but I don’t hear any of it.
I can’t stop thinking about that beautiful boy.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Second chance romance between former high school sweethearts Nevada and Yardley. Nevada returns to town after many years and he still hates Yardley for what she did to him. Yardley still has hope that he will forgive her and has feelings for her.

So, I love Renshaw’s books, but this one was a bit of a letdown. It was significantly shorter than her other books; although, there was a prequel of Nevada and Yardley’s story after the end of the book. The book felt a bit rushed. The writing was good, as usual and I could feel the characters’ emotions while I read the book, but again, it just seemed short and rushed.

Is it just me or does Renshaw have the most unique non-paranormal characters names? Yardley, her sister is Bryony and, of course, Nevada. I literally had to google Bryony to figure out how to pronounce it.

Overall, a good read, just a bit shorter than I expected.

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Reckless by Michelle Horst!

I was in love with the boy. I’m obsessed with the man.

Logan is my older brother’s best friend.

My teenage years were spent dreaming about our future together.

He taught me how to kiss. He stayed up late with me while I studied. He escorted me to the prom.

But he is one of the Screw Crew and they only have one rule. I’m off limits.

I went to college and he started working. The secret messages stopped and I lost my first love before it even had a chance.

I’ve spent the past four years trying to forget the only man I’ll ever love. Just as I start to make a life for myself, guess who comes barging back into my life?

My Review

3.5 Stars!

I was a huge fan of book one in this series. I mean #screwcrew just kind of turned me off. BUT, the plot was good and the characters were likable enough, so I was looking forward to reading Reckless, if only to give the series a second chance. I’ve read a lot of Michelle Horst’s books and I am a fan, so I’m wondering if it was just this series in particular, but while Reckless was an improvement on book 1, I still had some issues with things.

The book takes place several years after book one. The Screw Crew are all grown up and have started a business. (I have no real idea what they do, but that’s neither here nor there). It seems the business was largely funded on Rhett and Mia’s trust fund, so that was a weird. Anywho…

Logan is Rhett’s best friend. Mia is Rhett’s sister. The trope in this one is obvious. It took me a few tries to get past say the fifth chapters or so, because I was honestly confused. My confusion was eventually cleared up when things are explained, but let me tell, those first few chapters, I spent a lot of time asking “what the heck?” Seriously, Rhett and Logan are idiots and Mia just freakin’ gave up and moved on with her life? Yeah, that didn’t really work for me.

However, once that whole confusion bubble was cleared up for me, the book improved greatly. It was a little tamer than I thought it would be. I mean, they are all grown up now. But, that’s just my hang up. Things moved along nicely until Logan, the ding dong, just puts up a big old barrier and slows the whole dang thing down. Ugh!

A nice ending and pretty good story make for an okay book.

Feeling dejected I walk to my room. I hate being the odd one out. Nicole didn’t stop gushing about her first kiss with Derek. Soon all the girls were comparing their kissing experiences and all I could do was hope no one would notice that I had nothing to say.
“Hey, did you have a bad day?”
My head snaps up at hearing Logan’s question. My heart skips a beat like it always does whenever he’s around.
“It’s nothing. Did you all skip class again?” I ask, wondering why they’re here so early on a Friday afternoon.
“No, it was cancelled. There’s a game tonight.” Logan tilts his head and his eyes search my face. When he looks at me like that I can almost pretend he might see the real me. “Want to talk about it?”
I want to talk to him but not about what happened today, so instead of answering I just shrug. I walk into my room and drop my bag on the floor.
Logan comes in and I’m surprised when he sits down on my bed. Suddenly I’m nervous as hell and all I can do is stand like a pillar of salt while awkwardly wondering if he would think it’s weird if I sit next to him.
“Talk to me, Mia. I might be able to help and worse case I can listen.”
My thoughts go back to how stupid I felt while the girls were all laughing.
Secure in the knowledge that Logan has no idea how I feel about him, I look down at my feet and mumble, “I haven’t kissed anyone yet and today all my friends were talking about their first kisses. It felt like …” I let the words trail away, too embarrassed to continue.
“You felt like?” Logan stands up and walks to where I am. When I don’t answer him, he gently places a finger under my chin and lifts my face so I have to look at him.
“It felt like …” I swallow hard, feeling more sad than embarrassed that I’m having this conversation with Logan. “I’m fat and ugly. I know that’s why none of the guys will even look at me. Today it just felt like it was out there for everyone to see.”
Logan leans around me and he shuts the door. I glance at the closed door and then look back to him, a thankful smile on my face. I didn’t even think about the other guys being in the house. I don’t want them to hear about my day.
When Logan tucks some hair behind my ear my heart flutters. I have such a huge crush on him.
“You’re not fat and you sure as hell aren’t ugly, Mia.”
I try to keep the smile on my face and nod. Of course, he’ll say that. I’m Rhett’s baby sister.
“Don’t do that.” He brings both his hands to my neck and with his palms he nudges my jaw so I’ll look up again.
“It’s okay. It just sucks that I don’t know how to kiss. What if I meet a guy who wants to kiss me and I mess it up?”
“Is that what’s really bothering you?”
He’s so patient with me that it warms my heart.
“Yeah. I don’t want to look like an idiot.”
I can see he’s thinking hard about something, but I’m not complaining because his hands are still on my neck. I love it when he touches me. I resist the urge to close my eyes so I can just bask in the feel of his hands on me.
“Do you want to learn how to kiss?”
I think about his question, not sure what he’s actually asking me.
“It’s not like I can go for lessons somewhere,” I whisper.
“I can show you.”
For a second I can only stare at him. Did he just offer to teach me how to kiss? I have to remind myself to breathe as excitement rushes through my body.
I nod and almost stutter, “Would you be okay with that?” I’m so thankful when the words come out sounding normal.
He drops his hands from my neck and smiles. It’s not his usual friendly smile. This time there’s a softness to it that actually makes me feel more nervous.
“Of course I’m okay with it.”
Duh … I want to kick myself. Logan’s just offering to help because he’s friends with Rhett. It’s not like it means anything to him. It doesn’t stop me from feeling excited. Even if it means nothing to him, it will still be a dream come true for me.
When he takes a step closer to me and places a hand on the back of my neck, my mouth instantly goes bone dry. My whole body tenses as I wait for his next move.
“It’s normal to feel nervous when you’re about to kiss someone for the first time, but try to relax. If you worry too much about it you’ll end up missing out on the whole experience.”
I nod, unable to form any coherent words right now.
Tilting his head to the right, he leans closer until I can feel his breath on my lips. I stop breathing and stare at his mouth as if it holds the answer to all the mysteries of the universe.
My insides are quivering with nerves and I can feel my hands shaking. My heart is beating so loudly it’s all I can hear.
Slowly he closes the distance until his lips press softly against mine. Everything stops. The loud thumping in my ears, the quivering inside of me, and even the shaking of my hands. There’s only the perfect silence surrounding us as I feel the warmth of his lips on my own.
I jerk when I feel his tongue on my bottom lip. I didn’t expect it and I flush bright red when he pulls away from me.
“I’m sorry,” I blurt out, both embarrassed and sad that I ruined the moment.
Logan shakes his head as a sexy smile plays around his mouth.
“There’s nothing to be sorry about,” he says in a low tone that makes the quivering return with force. “This time open your mouth slightly and focus on what I do.”
Again I can only nod, ecstatic that he’s going to kiss me again.
This time he moves much quicker. He brushes his lips against mine as he takes a step that presses his body right up against me. It’s a sensory overload as I try to take in what his body and mouth feel like all at once.
His tongue traces my bottom lip again and I almost don’t remember to open my mouth. When my lips part he slips his tongue into my mouth and it makes tingles explode in my stomach. It’s so overwhelming that I can’t focus on anything.
He starts to caress my tongue with his own which makes my hands grab at his sides so I have something to hold onto or else I’ll drop to the floor.
Softly, he bites my bottom lip and I take a shuddering breath in response to the incredible feelings engulfing every part of me.
He brings his other hand to my jaw and with his body he pushes me back until I’m up against the wall. This time when his tongue slips into my mouth, I’m not as overwhelmed and I try to mimic his movements.
Soon I’m so lost in kissing Logan that I forget it’s not real. I move one hand up his body until I reach his neck, and I drink in the feel of his skin under my fingertips. This moment is everything … it’s heaven.
It’s over too soon as he starts to pull away, pressing one last soft kiss to my tingling lips.
He pulls me into a tight hug and whispers, “You’re beautiful, Mia, and you’re going to make some lucky bastard very happy.”

My Review

3.5 Stars

A story of regret, heartbreak, misunderstandings and finding your way back to true love. This is a well-written book with tepid characters. I enjoyed the story and the plot was a mix of second chance romance and enemies-to-lovers, which are two of my favorite tropes. The second chance part worked for me – teenage heartbreak leads to rekindled romance, but the frenemies with benefits (as the book calls it)? Yeah, not so much. However, I did like that Drake continued to pursue Azalea despite the many, many times she acted like a child and pushed him away.

Overall, a pretty good book with a decent a good plot.
