New Release ~ 3.5 Stars for Doggie Style by Piper Rayne!

Title: Doggie Style
Series: Dirty Truths #2
Author: Piper Rayne
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Release Date: November 20, 2017

Rumors never bothered me. If people want to guess at my sexuality because I design dog clothes for a living—let them. I know the truth.

I’m a red-blooded heterosexual male and just because I don’t have my tongue hanging out of my mouth around every female like my dog Cooper, doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate the female form.

Now with Teegan Lowery in my life I’m suddenly panting right next to Cooper, hoping for a taste.

I hired her for her stellar PR skills, but she’s slowly weaseling her way into a spot I’ve kept a NO VACANCY sign on for years. Everything about Teegan screams unavailable. The last thing I need is another dramatic, high maintenance woman in my life. Believe me, been there and done that.

But the sexual tension between us is like a game of tug-of-war and neither of us wants to lose.

I love dogs.
She hates them.
Turns out, we both love doggie style.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Doggy Style is a cute, fun romance between Leo and Teegan, but the real star of the book is Cooper, the dog.

This, the second book in the Dirty Truth series, is well-written, has a bevy of fun characters, an alpha hero and a strong heroine. But, that was about it for me. It isn’t that I didn’t like the book, I did, but it wasn’t my favorite. The drama was high and then it was just resolved, just like that and at about the midway point in the book. There wasn’t a fluid transition from the drama to the sexy times. Also, I didn’t feel the sexual tension that has been present in the other books. The sex scenes were good and hot, as I have come to expect from this writing duo, but even then they are few and far between. Lots of great secondary characters. Teegan was great, but I wasn’t sold on Leo. Cooper the dog… he was the star. That dog was hilarious!

Entertaining with a good plot, but just falls a little short in the execution.

Piper Rayne, or Piper and Rayne, whichever you prefer because we’re not one author, we’re two. Yep, you get two established authors for the price of one. You might be wondering if you know us? Maybe you’ll read our books and figure it out. Maybe you won’t. Does it really matter?

We aren’t trying to stamp ourselves with a top-secret label. We wanted to write without apology. We wanted to not be pigeon holed into a specific outline. We wanted to give readers a story without them assuming how the story will flow. Everyone has their favorite authors, right? And when you pick up their books, you expect something from them. Whether it’s an alpha male, heavy angst, a happily ever after, there’s something you are absolutely certain the book will contain. Heck, we’re readers, too, we get it.
What can we tell you about ourselves? We both have kindle’s full of one-clickable books. We’re both married to husbands who drive us to drink. We’re both chauffeurs to our kids. Most of all, we love hot heroes and quirky heroines that make us laugh, and we hope you do, too.

Blurb
Some would say I have a privileged life. Daughter of the current President of the United States, wealthy, famous, and all things that some girls wish they had.

Only I’d dream of having a simple life. A life where I wasn’t marrying the scariest man I have ever met. Well, I thought I had just met him, but it turns out, there’s so much I don’t know about myself. That’s all thanks to a past so twisted, so warped, that no amount of money, or presidential status could wipe it clean.

I’m the rebel child. Or as some may see it, the disappointment. I’ve never cared about expensive wedding gowns, or how much someone paid for a tailored suit. I don’t care if your wedding dress is from Walmart, or if it’s from some fancy, upscale designer line.

So why am I marrying the devil dressed in a thousand-dollar
suit?

I’m about to find out how I got here. To marrying one of the most powerful men in the country. The road to finding out, though, is paved with darkness, painted with the blood of innocents, and it leads my ass straight to hell. Only this hell is a multi-million-dollar penthouse suite in New York City where Bryant Saint Royal, sits on his throne.

My Review

3 Stars!

Amo Jones brings back her dark, twisted story-telling with this dark, twisted first book in her new Crowned trilogy.

I have read all of Amo Jones’s books to date and have enjoyed them. She has a real knack for dark and twisted story-telling, but this one was just too much for me. I finished the book with a giangantic WTF hangover. Seriously. I have no idea what I just read. No worrying about spoilers, because I’m not sure what is a spoiler and what isn’t. Despite that, the tale is dark and twisted and I finished the book. I felt like I had to, because I was sucked in. As I’m sure you can figure out (since this is a trilogy), the book ends on a clusterF of a cliff-hanger. I gave the book 3 stars because it is Amo Jones and I know she will reveal all in time and because who else can write this kind of stuff and still be entertaining!

If you’re looking for dark, twisted and slightly insane, then this will be the book for you.

Blog Tour: 3.5 Stars for The Proposition by Elizabeth Hayley!

Professional hockey player Ben Williamson doesn’t quite know how he got himself into this situation; hiring someone to be his date to his brother’s wedding is way out of character for him. But with family pressuring him to settle down, going stag just isn’t an option. It would just be one more thing his polite, cultured family uses as ammo against him.

Ryan Cruz is having a bad day. Wait, make that a bad year. Broke, technically homeless, and living on a friend’s couch, she’s now also unemployed after her sharp tongue gets her fired from her job. So when a handsome stranger approaches her out of the blue with a proposition–he’ll pay her to be his date to his brother’s wedding for the weekend–accepting his offer is a no brainer. She needs the cash and figures it wouldn’t be in the best interest of a professional athlete to murder her.

What starts as a simple business arrangement soon becomes more as these opposites attract and get caught up in the wedding magic. Will Ben and Ryan be able to turn their relationship into something more? Or is love based on a proposition too much of an obstacle to overcome?

My Review

3.5 Stars!

A fun read about finding lovely unexpectedly!

Ben, a hockey player, is stressing over going to his brother’s wedding. He has to find a date, but time is a-tickin’. He has an accidental run in with Ryan, a newly out of work, former stripclub waitress in need of cash. Ben hires Ryan to be his date. I bet you can figure out what happens next.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It has characters you can get behind and a familiar trope that is still successful and Hayley worked it well. The book moves along quickly and I got involved in the story, until the end. For some reason, things didn’t quite click for me in the last 4th of the book. However, I enjoyed the wedding scenes and the HEA was satisfying.

A little disappointing at the end, but overall a good read.

“All right, all right,” Gabe said. “I’ll be serious and help you.”

“Thank you,” Ben said, happy he had the support of both his best friends. The three had been practically inseparable since they’d met in college and roomed in the athletic dorm. All three had been lucky enough to play professionally, Gabe as a shortstop for Philadelphia and Jace as a quarterback for New Jersey. His friends’ close proximity to one another was the reason Ben chose to get an apartment in Philly and spend his time here in the off-season. “I knew you were kidding when you mentioned the bet, but—”

“I wasn’t kidding. I have an idea that might work.”

“No,” Ben said sternly.

“Didn’t you learn anything from me, Torres?” Jace asked Gabe. Now that the bet they’d made last summer was behind them, they could all joke about it. But a year ago, it would have been a different story. Jace had nearly lost Aly when the three friends had competed to see who could bring the hottest date to an awards ceremony. Jace had unexpectedly fallen hard for the beautiful doctor, but all of that had almost crumbled when she’d learned he’d initially asked her out because of a bet.

“Okay, I get why doing a bet again would be a bad idea, but I do think that finding some arm candy as a distraction is a solid plan. A buddy of mine brought some chick he met at an airport to his parents’ anniversary party, and everyone thought they’d been dating for months.”

Ben was skeptical. “Like a fake girlfriend? There’s no way that’ll work.”

“I don’t know, man,” Gabe said. “It might. The secret to a good lie is you gotta believe it yourself.”

“You’re so wise,” Ben said flatly.

“I’m serious,” said Gabe. “The chick I was telling you about ended up getting my buddy’s grandmother’s crab cake recipe, and that shit’s for family only.”

“Just to make sure I’m understanding you right, I should believe you because of a crab cake recipe?”

Jace raised his eyebrows at Ben and Gabe. “It’s actually not a bad idea.”

Ben rolled his eyes. “Not you too.”

“You got any better ideas?” Jace asked. When Ben was silent, Jace continued. “I didn’t think so. There’s a decent chance this could work. We just need to figure out who to get to pretend to be your girlfriend. You’re gonna be up there for a few days.”

Ben rubbed a hand over his forehead in frustration. “I don’t know. Fuck. No one’ll want to spend that much time with my family. A few hours with them is more than enough.”

“She doesn’t have to want to spend time with them,” Gabe said, a look in his eyes that told Ben he was up to something Ben was probably going to want no part of.

“Should I even ask what you’re talking about?” Ben said.

“Probably,” Gabe said. “Because I have the answer to your problem.”

Ben looked at him expectantly, but when he realized that wasn’t enough, he said, “Fine, you’re really gonna make me ask, aren’t you? Why doesn’t it matter if she doesn’t want to be there?”

A smile spread across Gabe’s face. “Because you’re gonna pay her,” he said simply.

“Like a prostitute?” Ben replied.

“Not a prostitute,” Gabe said. “An escort.”

Elizabeth Hayley is actually “Elizabeth” and “Hayley,” two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. The product is Pieces of Perfect, their debut novel. They learned a ton about one another through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly (much to their husbands’ chagrin).

They live with their husbands and kids in a Philadelphia suburb. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

Elizabeth Hayley’s writing motto is best captured by the words of Patrick Dennis: “I always start with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind.”

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Hangry by Lily Kate!

Today we have the blog tour of Hangry by Lily Kate! Check it out and grab your copy today!

Title: Hangry

Author: Lily Kate

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Hangry:

han·gry

adjective

informal

  1. bad-tempered or irritable as a result of hunger.

Ladies & Gents,

I sold my soul for a hamburger.

And I have no regrets. When a girl is trapped indefinitely in an elevator with a smoking hot burger and an empty stomach, even the strongest of women will crumble.

The story goes like this: Bradley Hamilton, the most frustrating human alive, offered me half of his hamburger in exchange for a date. I took him up on the offer—while under duress—and now I’m stuck with the consequences. Specifically, the scorching kiss at the end of our date that has me drooling for more.

However, there’s one whopper of a problem. This man has been a thorn in my side for the last twenty years—ever since he moved next door and became my older brother’s best friend. We’ve gone head to head for years, and now, he’s trying to buy out my restaurant in order to plop one of his big fat gyms there instead.

I refuse to let him ruin my business. Unfortunately, Bradley Hamilton is like an order of french fries: you just can’t have one. It appears our lips are addicted to kissing. He’s alarmingly handsome. Deliciously confident. And worst of all? Underneath that salty exterior he’s starting to show signs of sweet.

Brad Hamilton is my guilty pleasure, my cheat meal, my greatest craving.

Which is why he’ll be one habit that’s hard to kick.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

A friends to lovers romance that will make you smile.

Lexi, Brad and her brother, Lucas, used to be the best of friends until they had a falling out. They haven’t spoken in three years. When Brad and Lexi get trapped in an elevator, things change.

I liked the premise of the story, but the characters were a bit lacking. I didn’t really connect with Brad or Lexi. This isn’t to say I didn’t like the book. I did. I read through to the end and the HEA was sweet and a perfect ending. I enjoy Lily Kate’s books, this one just wasn’t really my favorite. There were some LOL funny parts and you can feel the emotions between Brad and Lexi.

A sweet story of friends to lovers that all can enjoy!

New Release ~ 3.5 Stars for Colby by Casey Peeler

Colby Drake is Mr. Fix It and likes to take things into his own hands. Working in Aunt Tootie’s shop, Dixie is always taking matters into her own hands, and Colby is determined to solve all her problems regardless of whether she wants the help or not. But she’s no damsel in distress looking to be saved.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Self-proclaimed bachelor, Colby, meets fiery Dixie and sparks fly. He wants to save her and she doesn’t need saving. There’s a lot of push and pull leading to a very sweet, very sexy moment when Dixie finally gives in! I enjoyed this one, a lot. Colby is not my favorite of the Drake brothers, but he was still lovable. Dixie made this story, for sure. Lots of fun to read, Colby is a hit with me.

The moment the door to the store flies open, it takes all of two seconds to see that ginger walk back in here like she’s done a minimum of two times a week since she arrived into town three months ago. Dixie is a spitfire with hair to match, emerald eyes, and is fucking independent as hell.

“Mornin’, Colby. I got a leak at the shop. Can you tell me if you’ve got one of these?” she says as she tosses the spray hose on the counter. Looking at it, it’s an easy fix, and I know I’ve got the Belvedere hose that should easily fix it.

“Yeah, come on. It’s on aisle three.”

“Thank goodness! How the hell am I going to shampoo hair without a freaking sprayer?”

“You could use a cup,” I say as I try to refrain from laughing.

Rolling her eyes, she places her hands on her hips. Shit. Here it comes. “Drake, you listen. I will not have folks getting shampooed with a freaking cup. This ain’t some five-dollar mall beauty parlor. I’ve got a good thing going, but damn, every time I turn around something’s falling apart.”

New Paranormal Romance ~ 3.5 Stars for Night’s Caress by Mary Hughes!

Title: Night’s Caress
Author: Mary Hughes
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Release Day: September 25th

Night’s Caress Synopsis:
When artist Brie Lark left her vampire ex and her straitjacket of a hometown to breathe free in New York City, she promised herself two things: she’d never go back to Meiers Corner, and no more vampires. The last thing she expected—or wanted—was to be sent back home on an assignment. But her boss at the FBI needs her undercover on a murder case, working with a black-haired, black-eyed giant god of a man who’s her idea of perfection, except for one thing—he’s a vampire.

FBI Special Agent Seb Rikare is an ancient vampire hardened by loss. He’s cut all emotions to protect himself and leads a deliberately steady, almost sterile life. The brash young woman forced to pose as his lover irritates him, with her jangling bracelets and colorful hair. But as much as she irritates him, he finds himself drawn to her lively spirit and he’s tempted to make fantasy a reality.

My Review

3.5 Stars!
A paranormal romance about the uncanny partnership between an ancient, alpha vampire and sassy female who is his reluctant partner.
Mary Hughes has written an immersive novel that makes you feel as though you are right in Meiers Corners yourself. Very well-developed scenery. Unfortunately, I did not feel the characters were given as much due. Seb is difficult to warm up to. Brie is better, but it still took me some time. Then there is the way the book was written – Seb’s part was written in 3rd person and Brie’s in first. It was too distracting for me. It also took a bit of time to really get into the book.
Once Hughes finished her story and character development and really let herself go wild with the story… that’s when I really got involved. Once I got there, I was involved and ready to see it through. There were a few tense moments that had me biting my nails while I waited to see what happened.
A little slow to start, but don’t give up. The rest of the book is totally worth it!

Jennifer Blackwood

The Proposal meets Two Weeks Notice in Ann Marie Walker’s new standalone romantic comedy, Black Tie Optional, which New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Probst calls, “a fun, sexy romp that will keep every reader entertained!”

Everything about Coleman Grant III oozes power and sex. And not the perfunctory kind either, but the sheet clawing, heart stopping, gasping for air after you’ve screamed so loud you can’t breathe kind. From his dark wavy hair that stands in an artfully rumpled mess, to the blue eyes that sear your skin, to his full, sensual lips – on the surface he’s pure perfection.

Too bad he’s an asshole. An arrogant, uptight corporate raider hell bent on destroying the environment one species at a time.

Everything about Olivia Ramsey screams hippie humanitarian. From her blond hair tied in a sloppy bun, to her faded jeans with the Bonnaroo patch sewn on the thigh, to her combat boots still splattered with mud from the previous day’s site visit.

So it makes perfect sense that they would get married. In Vegas. Stone-cold sober.

Cole needs a wife. Olivia needs to save an endangered species. But what starts as a marriage of convenience soon turns into a battle of wills and sexual tension. Love is a game, and Olivia and Cole are ready to win.

Excerpt

Chapter One

Just like clockwork, Olivia thought. She watched the gas-guzzling SUV roll to a stop alongside the curb, its hazard lights blinking as if some sort of justification for bringing a full lane of Chicago’s morning rush hour to a grinding halt. Every day the sleek black car stopped in exactly the same location so the almighty Coleman Grant III could get the same extra hot, double shot Americano from the same big-chain coffee shop, bypassing the smaller, neighborhood establishments trying to stay afloat as corporate America runs them into the ground.

A mountain of a man in mirrored aviator shades jumped out of the front seat to open the rear door, giving Olivia a clear view of the luxury vehicle’s interior. Two leather captain’s chairs with fold down keyboards and armrest tablet holders sat facing several television monitors mounted above what appeared to be a full-service bar. Forget running a business, it looked as though Coleman Grant ran NASA from his back seat. Honestly, what could possibly be so important that it couldn’t keep until he got to the office? The commute from his Gold Coast penthouse to his Loop headquarters was less than two miles. Hadn’t the guy ever heard of just chilling out with some tunes?

Olivia approached the car just as Grant climbed out of the back seat. He paused to button the jacket of his navy blue Tom Ford and for a moment she forgot he was an arrogant, self-righteous prick hell bent on destroying the environment one species at a time. For a moment, she allowed herself to take in the physical perfection standing in front of her. From his dark wavy hair that stood in an artfully rumpled mess, to the blue eyes that seared her skin, to his full, sensual lips – everything about Coleman Grant oozed power and sex. And not the perfunctory kind either, but the sheet clawing, heart-stopping, gasping-for-air-after-you’ve-screamed-so-loud-you-can’t-breathe kind. But then his eyes narrowed and his lips curved into a knowing smirk and Olivia remembered exactly who she was dealing with.

“Mr. Grant,” she began.

The bodyguard moved to step between them but Grant waved him off. “Ms. Ramsey, what a surprise,” he said, not at all surprised since this was the eighty-third day in a row she had approached him. Not that it mattered. She had no plans to stop these sidewalk sessions until he either agreed to her demands or filed for a restraining order.

He made his way toward the coffee shop with Olivia tight on his heels. “You know, most people simply make an appointment with my assistant.”

“I’ve tried that, Mr. Grant. But for some reason your schedule is always full.”

“Pity,” he said, his voice void of all emotion. When he reached the glass doors, he yanked one open. “Please, after you.”

Bastard. Normally he charged in like he owned the place, never mind if she or anyone else got a face full of door. How dare he try to throw her off her game by acting chivalrous. As if the man had a courteous bone in his body. Olivia stood frozen in place, debating how best to handle this latest twist in their balance of power. As she did, Cole’s gaze raked her from head to toe, from her blond hair tied in a sloppy bun, to her faded jeans with the Bonaroo patch sewn on the thigh, to her combat boots splattered with mud from the previous day’s site visit.

She hated to admit it, but the scrutiny of his gaze was unnerving. And it wasn’t just the laser like focus. There was something about his expression, as if he wasn’t looking at her fully clothed in a shop brimming with customers, but rather undressing her with his eyes. She shifted in place, debating if she should call him out for his piggish behavior or simply stick to the topic at hand.

“Suit yourself,” he finally said, stepping through the doors and leaving her alone on the sidewalk.

Not so fast. She took a deep breath and joined him at the service counter. “Mr. Grant, as I’m sure you’re aware, the northern long-eared bat was recently granted protection as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.”

“Rather difficult to forget given your daily reminders. Although I must say, Ms. Ramsey, you disappoint me. No visual aids today?” He turned away from the counter with his extra hot, double shot Americano to find Olivia standing behind him with an 8 x 10 glossy in her hand. “Ah, it seems I spoke too soon.”

“This particular species of bat has been the most impacted by white-nose syndrome and the resulting decline in their numbers is what—”

“Those really are the most vile creatures,” Grant interrupted. “Have you ever considered taking up the cause of a more appealing animal, say a manatee?”

“There aren’t any manatees in Lake Michigan.”

“Precisely.” He smirked. “Perhaps you could move? I’m sure you could find some poor, unsuspecting Floridians worthy of your attention.” He raised his left hand and for the first time Olivia realized he was holding a second cup. He thrust it in her direction and without thinking she took it, dropping the photograph as she did. “You seem like the type who would order your latte with a hundred and one specifications, but hopefully skinny vanilla will do.”

Olivia blinked. He bought her a coffee? What the actual fuck? Did he really think he could charm his way out of the hot seat? She had spent her entire adult life and most of her teens speaking on behalf of those who couldn’t. It was going to take a lot more than a few random acts of fabricated kindness to get her off his back.

She was about to tell him not only where he could stick his latte but how in her twenty-eight years on earth she’d never ordered a “skinny” anything, when he turned toward the door. She bent to scoop up the photo then hurried after him, fast talking her case all the way to the curb where his bodyguard stood waiting with the door already open. As usual, Grant didn’t say a word, much less defend his stance. Instead he simply flashed a grin that would have made her drop her latte, not to mention her panties, if she didn’t find him to be lacking in not only morals and ethics but quite possibly a soul.

He gave her a quick nod before ducking into the car. “Until tomorrow, Ms. Ramsey.”

With that, the door slammed shut and the SUV pulled into traffic to the sound of protesting horns.

“Asshole,” Olivia muttered under her breath. “Gorgeous asshole, but still.” She turned on her heel and started down the street with her head held high. Coleman Grant III might have been trying to make a mockery of her attempts to persuade him, but their standoff was far from over. A slow grin curved her lips as an idea began to take shape. She’d just pulled her smartphone out to send herself a reminder when it began to vibrate in her hand.

“Are you bringing your swimsuit?” her best friend asked before Olivia had even managed a hello.

“To the desert? You’re joking, right?”

“I wasn’t sure.”

“Cassie, I know you’ve had your head buried in cookbooks for the past few years but surely you can remember how a vacation works…lounge chairs, suntan oil, blended drinks with tiny umbrellas that make you say ridiculously inappropriate things to cabana boys.”

“I have never said anything inappropriate to a cabana boy. And that’s sexist by the way.”

“Cabana person?” Olivia laughed at her own joke. “I’m playing. But you’ve got to lighten up a bit. We’re headed to Vegas, Sin City, what happens there stays there and all that.”

“You sound like a tourism ad.”

“All I’m saying is you better be ready to party Hangover style.”

Cassie snorted. “Yeah, cause that worked out so well for them.”

“I promise I won’t leave you stranded on a hotel roof.”

“This is a bad idea. I should be staying here and looking for a job.”

“You’re the sister of the groom. You can’t very well ditch out on the bachelor/bachelorette festivities. Besides, if I can break my ‘Harass Coleman Grant’ streak for a few days, then you can certainly give the stand mixer a rest.”

“How’s that going by the way?”

Olivia groaned. “New day, same story. ”

“Maybe it’s time to—”

“Move on? No way.” While it was true that working freelance allowed Olivia a certain amount of latitude, she prided herself on never giving up. There was no way Coleman Grant was going to blemish her perfect record. “I’ll just have to double my efforts.”

Cassie laughed. “I’m actually starting to feel sorry for the guy.”

“Don’t be fooled by the looks. He might be hotter than Ryan Reynolds and Ian Somerhalder combined, but underneath that perfect exterior beats the heart of an ogre.”

“Sounds like someone has wet panties.”

“Why Cassandra Miller, is that smutty talk I hear coming out of your mouth? There may be hope for you yet.”

“Don’t change the subject. You’ve got the hots for this guy.”

“Hardly. He’s eye candy all right, but he’s also a spoiled, self-centered asshole who think it’s his way or the highway. Not this time though.” Olivia nodded to herself. One way or another he was going to give in to her demands. Coleman Grant III had finally met his match. He just didn’t know it yet.

My Review:

3.5 Stars!

You are cordially invited to this hilarious fake marriage romp!

Cole and Olivia are crazy fun. The fake marriage had so many hiccups and the fact that despite their mutual attraction, C & O didn’t really even like each other… well, it made for one super fun read. Cole is alpha. Olivia is a laid-back hippie.

Opposites attract is this sexy, hilarious romp!

Blog Tour: 3.75 stars for Holly Freakin’ Hughes by Kelsey Kingsley!

Today we have the blog tour for HOLLY FREAKIN’ HUGHES by Kelsey Kingsley! Check it out and grab your copy today!

About Holly Freakin’ Hughes:

31-year-old HOLLY HUGHES is happy with her life. She’s a moderately successful teen advice columnist living in a tiny studio apartment on the Upper East Side with her boyfriend STEPHEN and their cat CAMILLE. She has grand plans of marrying Stephen and having his babies, until Stephen announces that he is in fact gay and in love with someone else, his boss ANTHONY. This twist of fate is the beginning of a slew of life-changing events in poor Holly’s life. Her boss fires her from the magazine for being too old, leaving her unemployed and unable to keep her apartment.

With nowhere else to go, Holly moves back to Long Island to live with her younger sister LIZ and 3-year-old niece ANNA, and takes over as Anna’s babysitter until she can find the confidence to get herself back on her feet.

As a part of her babysitting routine, Holly takes Anna on bi-weekly trips to the local bookstore, where they attend Story Time. On one occasion, Anna just so happens to run face-first into 36-year-old BRANDON DAVIS, a tall, handsome man who just so happens to be an international best-selling author of a fantasy book series. Holly is unaware of this bit of information, and remains oblivious as their friendship and love for each other grows.

When Brandon faces his personal qualms toward his career and confesses who he is to her, Holly is left to face her own issues with inadequacy.

The story deals with acceptance for one’s position in life, forgiveness, and overcoming the feeling of simply not being good enough.

My Review:

3.75 stars!

I love discovering new to me authors and I am so glad to have found Kelsey Kingsley!

Holly Freakin’ Hughes was just plain fun to read. Poor Holly is a hot mess. Her life was near perfect until her boyfriend informs her he is gay and her life crumbles around her. She goes from living the life to living in her sister’s basement as a glorified nanny to her niece. Oh but the niece! Man, I wanted to scoop that kid up and hug her. Not just because she’s cute, but because she runs right into the perfect man for Holly! Holly and Brandon were quite perfect for each other and it was a joy to read their relationship develop.

Brandon and Holly are great characters, but could have used a bit more development and there were a few inconsistencies in the story (nothing overly distracting, just my overly pragmatic brain). Honestly, for a debut this was quite good. I believe Kelsey Kingsley has a bright future in writing. I look forward to reading more from her.

New NA/Contemporary Romance Release: 3.5 Stars for Heartless by Michelle Horst

I’m warned that Carter Hayes is heartless.

He’s part of the screw crew.
He’ll just use you and leave you.
He’s ruthless and always gets what he wants.

Just look for the trail of broken hearts and dreamy sighs and you’ll find him.

“Hot as sin, Carter.”

I don’t have time to fall head over heels for any guy. Besides, he’d never notice someone like me. I have a three step plan. Get through college. Get a job. Get my sister out of the hell hole I left her in. That’s all I have time for.

That’s until I hear of the betting pool the guys started. Whoever screws me first gets the money.  The moment Carter looks at me, I know it’s only because of the bet.

I tell myself our first kiss is only for show.
I hate my heart for falling for his irresistible charm.

For one foolish moment, I actually want him to be my first earth-shattering love. All it takes for me to give in is a little attention, a cocky smile, and a fake promise of a happily-ever-after.

When I’m surrounded by crumpled sheets and the smell of sex, I realize I let him have me for four hundred dollars.

To save what little pride I have left, I pretend it didn’t mean anything, that he’s just one last screw before we all leave college.

I’ve spent the last four years lying to myself. When I’m ready to take the final step of my plan, and save my sister, guess who walks through my front door?

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Heartless is the first book in Michelle Horst’s Enemies to Lovers series. It is an angsty roller coaster ride from start to finish.

Long story short – Della and Carter are both students at UNC, but they are from totally different worlds. Della is poor and has to work to cover expenses outside of school. Carter is from a wealthy background and his future is already set out for him. The two do not hit it off initially, but there is no denying the sparks between them.

Here’s the thing. I love the enemies to lover trope. It is one of my favorites. Unfortunately, this book just didn’t work for me. The writing is good, as I have come to expect from Michelle Horst, but the flow of the story was just too frenetic for my tastes. Della and Carter’s relationship had too much up and down and it felt like I had book whiplash. Seriously, one minute he’s saying really horrible things to her and the next he’s forcefully kissing her and telling her he wants more. The first 30% or so of the book is their back and forth that culminates in him finally deciding he likes her and has to be with her and she is throwing her virginal self at him. Now, I have to be really careful about how I proceed so that I don’t spoil anything.

So, if you read the blurb, you see that a $400 bet is the catalsyt for Della and Carter’s interactions. Well, it is and it isn’t. The bet is only mentioned in the first couple of chapters and then suddenly, Della is no longer butt hurt about five guys making a bet about sleeping with her and they are all friends. Say what? All of a sudden, the douche is a prince, the prince is a douche and the three stooges are just filler characters. Then, after the de-virginizing and a misunderstanding, Della runs away…again and Carter is all butt hurt. In my notes, I wrote the following: “Ok. Where is she going with this? He just said he was done trying to date? Just like that? He gets turned down once and boom that’s it, he’s off to sleep with half the campus to make himself feel better. Ummm…ok, sure.” So, what happens in the 1st third of the book could be an entire book, but nooo… now, we’re taken on a ride. The story jumps forward almost a year, then it jumps ahead 4 years. And we’re back to I love you but I hate you. But wait…we jump forward in time again. It was like a jolt to my book-reading soul each time the book jumped forward in time. Now, let’s talk about the word whisper. I get this is a popular word for romance authors to use during an intimate situation between two characters. I like the word when used in moderation. Unfortunately, Carter had only two volume levels when speaking – the whisper and the growl. Ok, there was a snap once. The overuse of the word whisper distracted me so much… so much!

Look. I have read almost everything Michelle Horst has written. I like her books and her writing styles, but this one just missed the mark. It was a good start to what is apparently going to be a series, about these five guys I’m thinking. There was decent set up for two of the additional characters for their future stories. The characters were easy to love and the base of the story was great. It will definitely appeal to angsty story lovers.

While it wasn’t my favorite, I would recommend it.

Blurb:

We’re heading back to Temperance Falls for a second chance at love…

She’s ready to move on

High school reunions are supposed to be fun. Unfortunately, mine starts with a storm that traps me in a house with my newly ex-boyfriend…and his hot-as-sin stepbrother. Luke kept in touch with me over the years, but not like this. Not with his hands, his fingers…his mouth. If my ex finds out, it’s more than just a friendship on the line. I could destroy a family.

He’s done holding back

Hannah’s been off-limits for twelve long years, ever since my stepbrother swooped in and claimed her before I could. As if coveting from afar isn’t bad enough, now I have to suffer through our ten-year reunion watching them together. But things aren’t as perfect in paradise as it would seem. One overheard conversation between them, and I’m ready to throw caution to the wind. If my stepbrother can’t make her scream, I’m more than happy to get the job done.

London Hale’s books can be read in any order or as standalones. Looking for something quick, filthy, and taboo with a guaranteed HEA and no cheating? The couples of Temperance Falls deliver.

My Review:

3.5 Stars!

You’re in for a sexy, sweet, smutty treat with Reunion!

Hannah is home for her high school reunion, but during a raging storm she gets trapped in a house with her ex and his stepbrother, Luke. She’s always been attracted to him, but was dating his stepbrother. Luke put Hannah in the off-limits category, but now things are different.

So, taboo? Not really. The chemistry is off the chart. The sex… five alarm hot! I enjoyed the short, slow burn that built as Hannah and Luke worked their way to each other. The story was good with the perfect mix of conflict and relationship. I love this duo’s writing style.

If you’re looking for a fast, sexy read, then Reunion will satisfy your needs.
