Title: Intrepid

Author: Keri Lake

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Intrepid:

In the corner house of an empty street, there is a boy inside a box. In that boy, there lives a secret, one so dark, it’s sealed with locks.

Nearly ten years have passed since the night I was captured. Tricked and betrayed, I suffered the hours of brutal torment with death’s cold whisper across my skin. And when the nameless faces that haunted my nightmares took everything and everyone I loved, I feared I’d never be free of the darkness.

But that’s the thing about fear. Over time, it breeds anger, and when anger fills the box, vengeance bleeds out.

It’s been almost a decade since I escaped their hell, staying in the shadows, hiding my demons, and God help them now that I’ve tasted retribution and crave more of it.

Blood is the price for pain, and I vow to take everything and everyone they love. I’m no longer a frightened boy, but the intrepid vigilante, a ruthless executioner, who will stop at nothing to punish the depraved few that stole my life and walked free.

The plan is perfect, except for her. The one woman I’m forbidden to have, whose soothing touch settles my fractured mind. My angel of mercy sent to silence the voices. Yet, not even she can save me from the black void wherein my skeletons lie buried beneath the truth. Because in order to feed my thirst for revenge, I have to destroy the very thing that gives me purpose.

Tooth for a tooth, heart for a heart.

My Review

4 Stars!

I just finished Intrepid and the only thing I can think of to say is… WOAH!

This book is a seriously intense ride. TJ is the anti-hero of all anti-heroes. He is not a good guy at all! He is a dangerous man out for revenge. Sera, tired of being pigeonholed by her lawyer father, unknowingly moves herself into the path of a dangerous game in Detroit. She is TJ’s pawn in his revenge game. I have to tell you, the chemistry between TJ and Sera is seriously hot! Scorching! The game just got more dangerous!

This is dark and twisty and did I mention dark? I loved it, but then I like a good dark romance/suspense. The only thing I didn’t enjoy about the book was the back and forth between past and present. I get that it was the right plot driver to tell the story, but it was a little more back and forth than I prefer. But, then, that is just me.

The is a really good, intense, dark read!

My Review

4.5 Stars!

A truly lovely book about family, love and finding your place in the world!

Mornings on Main is my first book by Jodi Thomas. I am generally not much for the Womens’ Fiction genre, but I will occasionally give one a try. I am so glad I gave Mornings On Main a read. This is a lovely story of family. Interesting characters that feel like old friends. A great story set in a small town in Texas with quirky townsfolk, busybodies, deeply-rooted family ties and the outsider who longs to become an insider but doesn’t quite know how.

I think what I appreciated most about Mornings On Main was the fact that Jodi Thomas took care with the characters. She gave me just enough to get me invested in each of the main characters without giving too much. Then, she slowly developed each one with care and I found myself flipping the pages faster and faster. I wanted to see if things would work out for Jillian and Connor. I wanted Sunnie to find happiness. I was sad about Gram, but enjoyed her positive outlook. Then, Thomas added another layer in the form of a little mystery. In the end, it was a wonderful read and a nice escape into the world of Laurel Springs.

A really great book that I highly recommend!

EXCERPT:

He held the truck door for her, then circled around and climbed in. “Where to?”

“Somewhere quiet. I’ve been surrounded by people all day.”

“I agree. The house has been full of friends since I got Gram home. I managed to run most of them off early last night so she could sleep and again this afternoon to let Gram rest a few hours before the quilters swarmed in.”

He drove through the Hamburger Hut, picked up malts and burgers, then crossed the bridge to the old part of town. The boards over the water were uneven, rattling her from side to side like a cheap, twirling carnival ride.

Jillian raised her eyebrows but didn’t say a word. Where they were going didn’t matter. She was with the one she wanted to be with. She needed to stop worrying about lingering memories and just relax.

He parked by a three-story building and climbed out.

She waited, not sure what to do. The malts and burgers were still on the seat beside her. Surely they weren’t stopping here. This place was scary even in daylight. She didn’t plan on staying around to see how it looked in less than an hour.

When he opened her door, he raised his arms to catch her. “Come with me.” He encouraged as if offering far more than a lift down from the high seat.

Her legs were plenty long enough to take the step out, but she slid into his embrace. He lowered her to the ground. For moment they were so close they touched as they breathed. She thought he might lean in slightly and kiss her, but he simply brushed his cheek against her hair. “Trust me, Jillian, you’re going to like this restaurant.”

He grabbed his raincoat from behind the seat, handed her the drinks and picked up their meal.

Following him into the building, she was surprised to see how sound the old factory seemed to be. The ceiling was tall, over twenty feet. Decaying ropes still hung from pulleys, and worktables stood dusty, silently waiting for craftsmen to arrive. The windows were high, ribboning the building with natural light.

Staying close, she whispered as though she might disturb ghosts, “What did they used to make in here?”

“I’m not sure. I think parts of oil rigs were shipped in and assembled here. I don’t know much about it, but there’s an old Christmas tree over there in the corner.” He pointed to a six-foot structure that was formed from a mixture of valves, spools and fittings welded together.

“They’re used at oil or gas well sites. I see them in the oil fields around. I’m not really sure why they call them Christmas trees. A roughneck would have to be drunk to mistake this jumble of metal for a tree.”

She turned in a complete circle. “Nice restaurant.”

“Oh, we’re not there yet.” He pointed to a staircase along one wall. “We’ve got rooftop seating.”

Suddenly excited, she climbed ahead of him, her shoes tapping a rhythm in double time. At the top, she waited impatiently with a malt in each hand.

He juggled the bag of burgers as he shoved the heavy door open. They stepped onto the rooftop with no one else around. She could see for miles in every direction. The trees, the fields. Oil rigs, scattered homes and barns, schools and churches.

“It’s beautiful!” The sun’s low glow gave everything a golden light.

He set the bag down and spread his raincoat out like a tablecloth on an air vent cover. “It’s not yet, but it will be.” He pulled up two empty five-gallon buckets to use as stools.

She sat the malts down. “You’ve been to this restaurant before.”

“Guilty. But I’ve never brought anyone here. Only you.”

While he unwrapped his burger, she looked around, pointing out everything as if he was also seeing it for the first time. “Look how winding the creek is.”

“I had no idea there were so many trees.”

“Oh, look at those horses running.” She loved the way the evening clouds moved over the land, darkening the hues of the earth in shadow as they drifted.

“It’s winter now, not near as pretty as it’ll be come spring.” He set his hamburger beside hers and came to join her near the roof’s edge. “I lease that flat land out to a farmer who plants cotton every spring. That brown dirt will look like a green carpet in a few months.”

“I won’t be here in spring.” She let the wind catch her words as she turned away from him and the view. The black tar roof beneath her feet was all she saw now, but she stared hard, willing not one tear to fall.

This time. This place she would miss. When she left, Jillian knew memories would be packed in her heart. A year from now, a decade, a lifetime, she’d still remember the beauty of this view in winter and wonder how it looked in spring.

My Review

4 Stars!

Maniac is an emotional read about trust, recovery and love.

Warning – Maniac does contain some trigger topics (Rape and suicide), so if those are triggers for you then this may not be for you.

I have read all the books in the Fallen Lords MC series and this one is my favorite so far. Wren suffered at the hands of the Hell Captains MC. She suffered so much she attempted to end her life. She is rescued by Maniac, a Fallen Lord, who watches over her as she recovers. Maniac is an alpha biker with a soft spot for Wren. He is so patient with and yet pushes her just enough to pull her out of her shell. Their relationship develops as the book goes on. It isn’t an easy road, but it is a sweet one.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I definitely liked more than the first two, not that there was anything in particular wrong with the first two books, but I can tell Travers has developed as a writer and the story just didn’t seem as forced. I loved Wren and Maniac. There is romance and danger and humor. There is one scene where all the women are drunk and it is hilarious. My only real complaint is near the end, Maniac “deals” with the Hell Captains. I get he’s a member of an MC, but this scene was so different from the rest of the book that I was just a little shocked. It isn’t that it doesn’t fit with the story, it was just shocking, that’s all.

A good MC romance!

MY REVIEW

4 Stars!

A fun twist on a tried and true trope, this roommates to lovers romance was a fun, sexy read!

Victoria Bright takes the roommates to lovers trope and gives it a shiny, new spin. She puts Ashton through the wringer more than once but rewards her well. Ashton was a fun character to read. The girl went through a lot and despite it all, she does what she has to and ends up winning in the end. Little secret? I wasn’t a fan of O’Shea in the beginning, but he grew on me quickly. The push and pull between Ashton and O’Shea was pretty great – a bit angsty, fun and steamy.

An enjoyable read for me.

Turning to the door, I smiled, ready to greet my late-evening customer, but faltered as the door closed behind him.

Cole Goodman was walking my way.

My belly dipped as I took him in. His aviator sunglasses were perched on top of his chocolate-brown hair. A black polo stretched across his broad shoulders and pulled tight across his muscled arms. His pale-blue jeans molded to his Herculean thighs before draping down to his black, square-toed boots. The leather belt on Cole’s trim waist held both a shining badge and a holstered gun.

Cole smiled and locked his light-green eyes on mine as he crossed the room.

His straight, white teeth made my breath hitch—something that had happened last night more times than I wanted to admit.

Molly, who had turned around from her seat to greet our customer, spun around so her back was to Cole. Her cheeks flushed as she whispered, “Wow.”

Wow was right.

Cole Goodman was—simply put—gorgeous.

He could give a woman a speeding ticket and get a thank-you in return. He inspired women to attempt push-ups in a karate class just for the chance to watch him sweat through his gi. Cole made grown women blush like teenagers and giggle in corners, like those girls at the dojo last night.

My Review

4.5 Stars!!

Holy wow! Are all books by J. D. Hollyfield like this? Geez, I hope so, because this book had me hooked from the very first page!

So, the blurb gives absolutely nothing away about the story itself, so I am going to take a page from that and keep the story details to a minimum.

I loved this story. It was a fast read filled with humor, romance and scorching hot sex. The story is along the enemies to lovers trope lines, which is one of my favorites. Trevor and Lucy don’t stay enemies for long, though, before they are hitting it between the sheets and many other places. There is a nice mix of comic relief courtesy of Lucy and her hilarious personality. Plus, lobsters!

I love Trevor and Lucy. Trevor Blackstone is extremely complicated, filthy rich and sexy as sin! He is alpha in the bedroom and the boardroom, but he has a big heart and trust me when I say, you will feel for him. Lucy is sassy, fun and I absolutely loved her. She fought for the things that were important to her and I loved her big heart of gold! The two of them have so much chemistry!

I read this in nearly one sitting (life, ugh!)! It was that good! I know you’re going to enjoy it!

Read an excerpt from BLACKSTONE

Being Sunday, I decide to take a break from memory lane. I snatch a worn historical romance paperback from Gran’s bookshelf and slide into my brand new white bikini. Grabbing my towel and a Mike’s Hard Lemonade from the fridge, I head out back.

The sun feels amazing on my skin. I inhale the breeze, tasting the salt of the ocean on my tongue. I drop my towel on the lawn chair and get comfortable. My shades are down, and my book is ready to be dominated.

“This is nice,” I hum to myself, lifting my lemonade and taking a nice sip.

And out it all repels as I spit and choke on it.

“Jeeeesus Christ.”

I knock my sunglasses halfway down my nose as my eyes threaten to fall out of their sockets. Where in holy heavens did he come from? The half-naked man leaning on his balcony across the way. My tongue about falls out of my mouth. Is that Numbers? And holy shit, when did he get so much muscle? I’d call him fit, but that’s not fit. That’s like, “Hi, I eat muscle for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and now I’m just all muscle.”

I wipe at my chin, unsure whether it’s lemonade splatter or I’m drooling. I’m probably drooling. I wasn’t paying attention to much of him yesterday when he was acting all crazy on my front step. I just wanted him gone. To be honest, while he was babbling, I was trying to dig in the back of my brain for my old high school karate moves in case he tried something on me. Looking at him now, I wish he had.

He lifts his hand, threading his large hand through his hair and dragging his fingers down his hard chest covered in a dusting of hair. “Oh boy, where’s that hand going?” I mumble, licking my lips. Oh yeah. I see where this is going. Yep, oh yeah… Did I just moan?

Oh, hell yeah I did, but it’s so worth it. His hand dips down into his board shorts and he adjusts himself. Feel free to pull them down. Show us the goods, I think, mentally visualizing just how big his junk is. He’s a pretty big guy. Big hands. Theory says, and all.

Watching him fondle himself in all his hot glory, my curiosity piques. How old is he really? He sure had a reason to take offense by my calling him old. He certainly doesn’t look old. He surely looks a zillion times hotter than Jimmy, and he was only twenty-eight. I’m not an age wizard, but if I had to guess, I’d say late thirties, early forties. Definitely a bit out of my age range. Why? No idea. No real reason screaming stay away. Well, besides the major one being he wants to evict me, tear down my Gran’s life of memories, and probably build a gym in its place.

Yeah, that’s a good enough reason.

It also reminds me it’s the guys who look appealing on the outside that usually turn out to be dicks on the inside.

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Roman by Heidi McLaughlin & Amy Briggs!

Title: Roman
Series: The Clutch Series: Book One
Authors: Heidi McLaughlin and Amy Briggs
Genre: Vampire Romance

Release Date: March 29, 2018

What a fabulous collaboration! Amy and Heidi rocked the paranormal romance world venturing into the unknown with their first go ahead. Roman was so much than I expected.” ~ Amazon Review

Amy Briggs and Heidi McLaughlin are a duo to watch! Roman was intense, romantic, sexy, and beautiful, but it was also so much more than a love story.” ~ Amazon Review

Everything about him tells her to stay away, yet she can’t seem to get the vampire out of her mind.

For Roman, humans are the bane of his existence always having to follow their rules. In all his years, he’s never needed one, until now.

For Fiona, vampires are off limits, evil members of society, until the one known as Roman crosses her path and shows her he’s no different than her.

My Review

3.5 Stars!

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this book, but the fact that Heidi McLaughlin wrote it was enough for me to want to read it. I was pleasantly surprised. But, I am picky about my PNRs and this one had less PNR than I would like, but the romance aspect was pretty spot on, so I’m good.

Roman is a vampire who has little use for humans, until he needs one to get approval from the gaming commission so that he can purchase and open a casino. He is alpha, has a temper and is sexy! Fiona is the human Roman needs to help him. Her father is the head of the gaming commission. Roman’s opinion of Fiona is rather low in the beginning, but she certainly grows on him. I liked Roman. Fiona, not so much.

The story flows nicely and is entertaining. It isn’t what you normally would think of as a vampire story. There really isn’t much danger. The book leans much more toward the romance side.

A good read that kept me entertained, but was a little lacking.

Katy Regnery never ceases to amaze me. Everytime I pick up one of her books I love it. There is no exception here. Smiling Irish was a near perfect read! A story of opposites attract, family, bravery and love, I was captivated from the very first page! Tierney blossomed because of Burr. Burr discovered what he was missing. There was danger and romance and love. I couldn’t read fast enough! Plus, we get to see Rory and Ian again, as well as, Brittany.

Smiling Irish is sexy, sweet perfection!

Ivy Hayes

Dating can be a rocky journey. Once the new shine wears off, you may end up with a case of buyer’s remorse.
That’s where I come in. I set the backdrop and coach you through the breakup.
Don’t want overblown drama, hard feelings, or a drink tossed in your face? Then I’m your fairy godmother, child.

Becket Jones

As an NFL quarterback, endorsement ads and the media pandering after me are all part of the game.
Ivy Hayes is the first woman who doesn’t care about my money and the notoriety that goes along with it.
But I’m a long-term guy, and she operates strictly in the now. Which means I need to bring my A-game.

Otherwise, I’ll end up getting ditched.

My Review

4.5 Stars!

Swoon! This was an amazing, beautiful sports romance featuring a swoony QB hero who wants his happily ever after and a reluctant heroine who doesn’t believe in love.

I have to tell you, this is my favorite of all of RC Boldt’s books! All her books are great, but Becket and Ivy just spoke to me. Their story is sweet and romantic and a little bit frustrating. Becket wants his HEA and he knows Ivy is it, but he also knows she needs to be handled carefully, he just doesn’t know why. So, he goes about wooing her and it is pretty, freaking fantastic! Plus, there is this little mystery about Ivy’s background, which is consistently hinted at but nothing gave it away. When the big reveal happened, I was honestly caught off guard. I LOVE that!

An amazing story that is a must read!

New Romantic Suspense ~ 4.5 Stars for The Secret Theif by Nina Lane

Behind his beautiful eyes
Lay a thousand secrets and lies.
But my own secrets are all laid bare
The twisted reality of a disgraceful affair.

I once deciphered the mysteries hidden in art
Then mistakes and desire tore me apart.

Now I’m shipwrecked at the end of the earth
Desperate again to prove my worth.

The lighthouse keeper is a stranger to me
Yet one night with him sets me free.

We find ourselves united by the stars above
Both of us needing the salvation of love.

Until our secrets and shame continue to build
And what was flourishing will soon be killed.

My Review

4.5 Stars!

Nina Lane has outdone herself with this sexy, suspenseful story full of twisty secrets and sexy romance!

I am a big fan of Nina Lane’s books, in general, but this one is by and far my favorite. It is different from anything else of hers that I have read. It still includes her brilliant and effortless writing style, but there are just so many more layers to this story. It isn’t just a romance. It is a maze of secrets and lies, heartfelt declarations of feelings and emotions, soul-wrenching and life-altering secrets, complicated backgrounds and romantic yet dangerous presents.

From the opening words of the prologue, I was drawn into this world of Castille, Maine. I tried my best to figure out the secrets, but let me tell you, Nina Lane kept those answers so close to the vest and only revealed them when the time was right. She didn’t spill them abundantly nor did she even hint at answers to some of them. Instead, she continued to weave this masterful story giving just enough to keep me reading knowing I would be rewarded when the time was right.

I am not going to go into even a little bit of detail about the story itself. You will appreciate it so much more without any hints of any kind. The blurb, which is normally something I don’t mention, is a twisty, little puzzle in and of itself. It gives it all away without giving anything away. Suffice it to say, you will want to set aside so uninterrupted time to read The Secret Thief, because I promise you that once you start it you won’t want to put it down.

The minute Flynn opens the workroom door, my whole body zings with excitement and anticipation. Even with his dark frown, the remoteness surrounding him like an aura, the clipped tone of his voice, I react to him as if he were stroking my hair and whispering sweet nothings in my ear.

Jeremy hadn’t come close to eliciting anything even close to this…which is exactly the reason I’ll go out with him again, if he asks me. Jeremy is solid, grounded, honest. Everything about Flynn is a mystery and a fantasy. I’d gotten caught up in a fantasy with David—whose “mystery” had been a lie—and I’d paid the price.

Never again.

“How was your weekend?” I set my satchel and lunch bag on the desk.

“Fine. Yours?”

“Great.” I give him a once-over, looking for evidence of an encounter with a chick, but while he looks edible in his worn jeans and T-shirt, like a warm, rumpled bed I could nestle right into, his demeanor is as impassive as ever.

Does he ever smile? Every now and then I’ve caught a glimpse of amusement, a twitch of his mouth, but I’ve yet to see him fully smile.

“Any special instructions for today?” I turn on the laptop computer and open my notebook.

“Stay away from Jeremy King.”

Shock bolts down my spine. I jerk my head up to stare at him. He’s watching me with a narrowed gaze, his mouth set in a stern line.

“Um…what?” I can’t get another word out.

“Stay away from him,” Flynn repeats. “He’s not good for you.”

Irritation breaks past my shock. “How would you know who is or isn’t good for me? You’ve barely said twenty words to me the whole week I’ve been working here.”

“I don’t need to say anything to know the facts.” His tone hardens. “I don’t want you around him.”

“Well, you have no right to tell me that,” I retort. “How did you know I went on a date with him anyway?”

His jaw tightens. “You think people around here don’t take notice when their favorite son is out having dinner with the new girl in town?”

Christ. I experience a sudden longing for the cold anonymity of a big city.

“I know people are talking about me,” I snap. “But I refuse to let gossip dictate what I can and can’t do. And for your information, Jeremy knows about what happened to me, and it didn’t seem to bother him.”

“That’s not the point. You can’t work for me and see him.”

My shoulders tense. I focus on the computer, hitting the key to bring up the database software.

“My date with Jeremy has nothing to do with my work here,” I reply stiffly. “I didn’t, and won’t, tell him anything about the job or the fact that you’re my employer. You don’t need to worry about breach of contract.”

“This isn’t about the damned contract.” His voice is suddenly sharp.

He steps closer to me, his soapy, warm scent filling my nose. I hold my ground, not wanting him to see me weaken even though I’m melting inside at his nearness. Impassive though he is on the exterior, I can almost feel the energy coursing through him, his heavy strong heartbeat, the rush of his blood.

“I don’t want you around King,” he repeats.

“Does your animosity have something to do with him wanting to sell the lighthouse?”

“I’m not answering questions.” His gray eyes turn the color of metal. “I’m telling you to stay away from him.”

My pulse races. “You don’t have that right.”

“I’m your boss.”
“That doesn’t mean you can make that demand.” The words snap out of my mouth without thought. “And if you think you can threaten to fire me over this, then step back, mister, because I’ve been through the worst wrongful termination I can imagine. And even though my employer fucking won that battle, I still have plenty of fight left in me. I’ll put on my gloves and go another round with you, if I have to.”

Wow. Go, Eve.

I’m breathing fast, and my knees are quaking with sudden fear that he’ll make me prove my bold statement. I dig my fingernails into my palms. The air between us sparks with electricity. I force myself to hold my ground, to look directly at him and—

Admiration flashes in his eyes, like a silver comet streaking across the sky. His stern expression doesn’t change, but that brief glimpse of warmth eases the tension knotting my shoulders.

“I’m not going to fire you.” His voice is measured and controlled. “But I will not have you seeing King.”

“You don’t like him, so that means I have to stay away from him?” I ask. “Sorry, no. He’s one of the few people in this town who has been nice to me, and I enjoyed our date. I refuse to discount the possibility of Jeremy being my first real friend here.”
Flynn’s jaw clenches. “He wants to be more than your friend.”

“I know.” I put my hands on my hips and look him in the eye. “He even kissed me.”

Anger crashes over his features, and a vein throbs in his forehead. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he was jealous.

But I do know better. He’s mad because I’m refusing to do something he wants me to do. Despite, or maybe because of, his isolated lifestyle, Flynn is clearly a man accustomed to getting what he wants.

“He kissed you.” The word grind out of his mouth like broken glass.

“Yes. And I kissed him back. Like our date, it was nice. Nice hasn’t been the norm in my life lately.”
“I could kiss you,” Flynn retorts, his hands fisting. “But it wouldn’t nice.”

“Oh yeah?” My heart kicks into gear, blood rushing through my veins. “What would it be, then?”

He pulls in a breath, his gaze settling on my mouth. “Hot.”

“Prove it.” Borne of my endless nighttime fantasies, the dare flies out of me without thought of the potential repercussions.

Before I can take another breath, he grabs my shoulders and pulls me against him. I freeze, stunned by the reality of a moment I’d imagined more times than I can count—the sensation of his body against mine. And God, he feels exactly the way I’d imagined, a solid wall of heat and muscle pulsing with life. Rock-hard arms that could wrap around me so tightly nothing would get past them.

He stares down at me, his steel-like gaze sparking with intent like iron striking stone. I can’t move, can’t breathe, can’t think.

Then his mouth crashes down on mine, an onslaught, a possession, a claiming. Hunger bursts through me, a desire so sharp and intense it destroys all my defenses in one fell swoop. I moan, everything inside me weakening and aching for more. He slides a hand to my lower back, fitting our bodies together. I yield everywhere, my curves softening against him, any thought of resistance dissolving in a haze of disbelief and craving.

I part my lips tentatively, let him inside. My head spins with the taste of him—something decadent and forbidden. Our tongues touch, breath mingling. Arousal floods me, swift and hard, as if all the fantasies in which I’ve indulged have primed me for this moment. I bring my hands up to his face, his stubble coarse against my palms, slide them down to the sides of his neck where his pulse throbs heavily. He’s like the sea—mysterious, unpredictable, powerful. I could get lost in him, drown, let him sweep me away to a distant land where no one knows who I am and what I’ve done.

He lifts his head, breaking our kiss and stepping away from me at the same time. Heavy breaths saw from his chest, and his eyes are darkened to black. I bring a shaking hand to my mouth, suddenly unsure if the kiss just happened or if I’m like Alice in Wonderland, spinning downward, lost in my intricate imagination.
