Gritty. Sexy. Taboo.
Melanie Cannon is troubled, desperate, and only eighteen. Taking the fall for a friend, she’s forced into a drug education class, which she expects to be boring as hell. Until Detective Jake Beck walks in as her instructor.
Jake knows it’s a mistake to get involved with a high school senior.
But their passion is undeniable.
Their bond is the kind that lasts forever.
Their connection is more than just lust.
Jake’s willing to risk it all—even when harsh betrayal and ugly secrets threaten everything.
I gotta tell you, I had my reservations about this one, but the blurb intrigued me, so I took a chance. I’m glad I did.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from a book about an 18 year old girl and an older man, who is a cop. I figured there would be a lot of guilt and mixed feelings on his part and there was. What I was most worried about was how Melanie, the 18 year old heroine, would be written. Would she be overly mature due to life circumstances or would she be overly immature, because, hello, she is 18 and still in high school. Turns out, Melanie was a pleasant surprise. Monroe wrote her with a nice mix of teenage girl immaturity and a girl forced to grow up too fast. I felt sympathetic toward Melanie’s situation in life. She definitely didn’t have it easy. I guess what I’m trying to say is that Melanie felt real and I, for one, appreciated that.
Jake is 25 years old and a cop. Seven years isn’t really that large of an age gap, but the gap is evident in their levels of maturity. Jake really did a stand up job of fighting his attraction to Melanie for longer than I thought. Jake really cared about Melanie as a person and not just an attractive female.
Even though their relationship was unconventional and some might say wrong, I rooted for them. I knew something was coming that would throw a wrench in their relationship and when it hit, let me tell you, it was a doozy, but they recovered quite nicely and the ending was sweet and perfect.
A well-written novella with a taboo romance that will both surprise and endear you.
