Review – Wicked Knight (Wicked Horse Vegas #5) by Sawyer Bennett

Wicked Knight (Wicked Horse Vegas, #5)Wicked Knight by Sawyer Bennett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

3.5 Stars

A broody billionaire and a down on her luck single mom strike an illicit deal that leads to more than either one could imagine.

I think I expected more from this book. Before you go and “boo” me, here’s the thing… Bennett’s Wicked Horse Vegas and it’s predecessor, the Wicked Horse series, are billed as erotic romance and they are, for the most part. They are super steamy, sexy books with good plots and characters. Wicked Knight definitely drops down the scorcher scale to more steamy and less en fuego. Don’t get me wrong, there is talk of threesomes and machines and sex that certainly doesn’t fall into vanilla, but that’s the thing, it is mostly talk or in this case implied. Save for a brief scene in the Wicked Horse early on in the book, the rest of the sex is essentially implied. Some of you may like that. I often do. However, in a series and it’s spin-off where I have come to expect that, it was a bit of a let down.

The story itself was good. Asher Knight is a brooding billionaire who spends his night at the sex club instead of forming real relationships. Hannah Madigan is a single mom who is working three jobs to save money to get custody of her child back from her skeevy ex-husband. Asher offers Hannah a deal she can’t refuse. (I’ll let you read it to find out, but I’m guessing it won’t be that hard for you to figure out.) Things begin as all business, but as in any good romance, things begin to change. I was left a bit unsatisfied. There was no real climax in the story. Sure, Asher made an assumption and screwed things up, but it wasn’t a heart-breaking, left me gasping climax. The ending was good and the epilogue was satisfying as it tied up loose ends and Asher and Hannah got their HEA.

Let’s just get down to brass tacks, shall we? My real issue with this series, this book in particular, is the clinical nature of Bennett’s writing. I get it. Sawyer Bennett was a lawyer. She is probably super smart and extremely well-spoken. That is all fine and dandy, but I need the character’s voice to match the character’s background. Asher was written as cold, bitter, rich and well-educated. It fit him; although, he too was almost too clinical. Hannah came from a poor family in South Carolina and yet she was written with a richer vocabulary than I have and I have three degrees. The clinical nature of the writing took away from the steaminess and emotion that was meant to be there. This kind of writing fits some of her other series, it just doesn’t fit here.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and the characters, but I was left wanting more where emotions and sex were concerned.

I love a good paranormal romance, so I was excited to read this one from Celia Aaron. Her books are usually so rich with backstory and her characters so well-developed, so I had high anticipation for this book. I was not disappointed! From the prologue, Aaron gives us a rich backstory steeped in mythology.

Paris is broody and fierce, but his emotions run deep. Elena is fierce herself, working as a handmaiden for a goddess, completely unaware of her storied past. When Paris and Elena meet fireworks explode and the story just grows! Lots of detail, lots of emotion. I could not put it down!

Celia Aaron is a USA Today bestselling author and recovering attorney who loves romance and erotic fiction. Dark to light, angsty to funny, real to fantasy–if it’s hot and strikes her fancy, she writes it. Thanks for reading.

New Release ~ 4.5 Stars for Dear Jane by Kendall Ryan

I broke her heart ten years ago and left town.

She hates me, and rightly so. It doesn’t matter that the rest of the country loves me, that I’m a starting quarterback with a multimillion-dollar contract. Because when I look in the mirror, all I see is a failure who was too young—and too afraid—to fight for what I wanted.

But I’m not that guy anymore, and all I need is one shot to convince her.

He has no idea what happened after he left. And now I’m supposed to work alongside him like we don’t have this huge, messy history?

But I’m older now, wiser, and I won’t let anything stand in my way of doing a good job for this league. Not even one overpaid, arrogant player who thinks we’re going to kiss and make up.

News flash, buddy: I am over you.

Quesarasera Book Blog Review

4.5 Stars!

One of Kendall Ryan’s recent best! This story of second chance love is pretty great!

Weston and Jane were high school sweethearts. But, you know how it goes… they go to separate colleges, football becomes more important to one of them, they end badly. That’s what happened with our Weston and Jane. Weston broke Jane’s heart in more ways than one. So now, we fast foward 10 years and they are suddenly reunited when he gets the starting QB job for the team Jane works for and who Jane’s father, Weston’s former mentor, coaches. Can you say awkward?!

I am a huge fan of Kendall Ryan and I enjoy all her books, some more than others, of course, but I enjoyed Dear Jane more than most. Ryan seemed to get back to her original writing roots with a simple story without a lot of fillers and fluff. A good old second chance romance with just enough angst and a good back story. I flew through the pages taking in every word, not wanting it to end and yet wanting that HEA so much. I loved the secondary characters, the story and the H and h!

A great story that has pretty much everything you want in a romance.

New Release ~ 4.5 Stars for Love Sincerely Yours by Sara Ney & Meghan Quinn!

Dear Mister…**strike out** no, too formal.

Hey there sweet cheeks *strike out* no, too forward.

To whom it may concern,

Full disclosure; before we move forward with this email, I would like it to be known that I have consumed an adequate amount of alcoholic beverages to intoxicate myself tonight. Three margaritas, two shots, and one beer—because it was free.

I think it’s important to be open and honest with your co-workers, don’t you?

So here I am, being honest. Drunk but honest. Or just drunk with lust? You decide.

I like you so much it’s clouding my judgment and making me do things I never would sober. Like write this letter.

I have a hopeless, foolish, schoolgirl crush on you when you are the last person on earth I should be falling for. Did you know people around the office call you a sadist? An egomaniac. An insensitive, arrogant prick. Your bark is worse then your bite, and you don’t scare me. The fact is, I’d love that bite of yours to nip at my bare skin while we’re both wearing nothing but sheets.

For once I want you to look at me as more than one of your employees.

And as long as we’re being honest, that navy blue suit you wear? With the crisp white shirt? It really makes me want to loosen your tie and show you who’s boss.

Quesarasera Book Blog Review

4.5 Stars!

Where to start? Gah! This book was so good!

I love a good boss-employee forbidden relationship. Add in the enemies to lovers and I’m sold! Rome and Peyton were pretty close to perfect.

I love this collaboration between Meghan Quinn and Sara Ney. Their writing styles compliment each others nicely. This book is fun, frustrating and romantic.

Rome is a stickler for the rules, because he makes them. He owns a successful company and he lives for work. He is rigid and regimented and his employees find him harsh and unapproachable, but Peyton sees his vulnerability and she wants him and wants him to notice her. So she tells him in an anonymous email.

So, my favorite part of this book was the emails between Rome and Peyton. They were real and open in those letters and it allowed each of them to see the other’s vulnerabilities.

Seriously, a good read! I was sucked in and could not put this book down!

Like a goddamn ray of sunshine, light streaming behind her from the window, a halo shining above her pretty head.

Her lying, beautiful head.

Dark hair, wavy and glossy, down around her shoulders, the rich color picking up red from the sun.

She’s holding a glass—it’s poised at her lips and she’s about to take a sip—when our eyes meet. She lowers it, her mouth parts, and her smile spreads.

Until I scowl. Then, her face morphs from happy to concerned in a second. Damn right she should be concerned.

I nod.

She nods.

My eyes trail down the front of her and I note her dress—it’s baby blue, wrapped and tied at the waist, and shows off her curves while highlighting her legs in those sexy-as-shit heels.

Stop thinking about her curves and legs. You’re not here to admire her.

The pile of gifts in the corner pisses me off, bringing me back into the present, back to my rage, and has me lifting my arm; crooking my finger.

Peyton’s brows go up at the same time her head cocks and she pokes a finger into her own chest. “Me?”

“Yeah. You.” I know she can’t hear me, but I say it anyway—and if she’s any good at reading lips, she’ll haul her ass over here right quick.

Her cup is passed. Skirt gets smoothed out. Chin tilts high.

She heads over.

Good girl.

“Follow me,” I order her when we’re on the outskirts of the room. When we’re clear across the office common area, I pivot to face her.

She’s shorter, even in heels, so I have to dip my head to glare at her. “Want to tell me exactly what the fuck is going on in there?”

She decided to go with the cheaper option and started writing… enter her first novel, Caught Looking.

New Release ~ 4.5 Stars for This Love by Kelly Elliott!

I was a self-appointed bachelor and happy to have the title. Everyone thought it was time for me to settle down and find a nice girl. Well, no thank you. This cowboy wanted to stay clear of relationships. I wanted the freedom that came with no strings.

But what did I know? Nothing apparently.

Everything changed when I looked into her green eyes; my world tilted when she smiled at me.

What was this feeling?

Whatever was happening had me losing my damn mind. I fumbled with my words. My body wasn’t my own. I wanted her … desperately.

Was I ready to give up my bachelor days, or was this Irish girl simply an itch I needed scratched?

I know you’ve all been waiting for Maebh and Cord’s story and you will not be disappointed!

Cord is and always has been a playboy. He has no desire to settle down and loves his life the way it is. He works hard at his bar and plays hard at well… his bar. These are my favorite heroes to see fall. They think they are above it all and then BOOM along comes that one person to make them change their mind.

Maebh is a sassy Irish woman who is opening a restaurant and bar right down the road from Cord’s Place. From the moment he sees her, she catches Cord’s eye and he is a goner, even if he fights it tooth and nail.

The book moves fast in the beginning, which worried me a little. When I say fast, I mean Maebh and Cord are saying those three little words by like 40%. But, don’t you worry your pretty little heads. There is plenty of story to fill the remaining 60%. There’s a little of everything – family interference, outside interference, insecurities. All of these little pieces fall together to make a picture-perfect ending!

Oh, how I love this family and their stories! Cord and Maebh were pure book goodness!

About When You Became Mine:

I was twelve years old when I fell in love with Piper Kelley. Even at the age of eight, she was everything I wasn’t: brave, bold, and beautiful.

The night of my college graduation party, I finally made my move, but Piper only had eyes for one man—my younger brother.

With a battered heart, I left for Vegas, determined to put her behind me. But eight years later, fate proved once again that it had never cared about my plans.

Now, I’m back home, and determined not to fall into the same trap I spent the majority of my adolescence trying to escape.

But when Piper finds herself at the risk of losing her medical license, I realize just how far I’m willing to go to protect her.

I was twelve when Piper Kelley became mine.

It’s time I let her know.

When You Became Mine takes the reader on a journey that spans 20 years. Two friends, as close as siblings. Piper loved Hampton her entire life, until a tragedy brought secrets to light. Lawson loved Piper, but could never compete with his brother Hampton. Lawson left town and now eight years later, he is back and Piper is his roommate.

This was a good read. I am not usually a fan of time progression books, but I liked how the author did it here. She progressed through important times in the characters’ lives without over doing it. Then brought it all home when Lawson returned to his hometown. I loved how we, the readers, could see Lawson’s feelings for Piper, but Piper never realized it. I think it allowed their relationship to progress organically. Nothing was rushed. There was even a little mystery in the book that was a nice addition.

A good read— romantic, fun, emotional.

New Release – 4 Stars for Crave by Adriana Locke!

Title: Crave
Series: The Gibson Boys #3
Author: Adriana Locke
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Hadley Jacobs is over Machlan Gibson.

Sure, she’ll always be a little weak to the dimple in his right cheek and the way his five o’clock shadow makes him ruggedly handsome. But that’s not enough to cover every other thing about him because they all drive her nuts. Like how he’s won’t admit he’s wrong even when he knows it and how he drives his stupid car a million miles an hour on wet asphalt. As she rolls back into town and takes a seat at Crave, she won’t take the bait. She’s over him. Mostly.

Machlan isn’t over her.

It’s not because he hasn’t tried. He reminds himself over and over that she’s not the girl for him. After all, she drives him insane with her sassy attitude and the way she calls him out on everything. She beats him at poker, even though she doesn’t know the difference between a straight and a flush, and when she looks at him with her bright, blue eyes, it’s unnerving. When she climbs onto that bar stool and orders a drink, he puts it in front of her and ignores the sparkle in her eyes. He’s not over her, but she won’t know that.

But she does know that. And he knows she’s not as over him as she’s pretending to be. When life forces their hand this time, there’s more on the line than a pile of poker chips. It’s their forever.

Crave is a standalone romance in a new small town, blue-collar series from USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke. Join readers everywhere as they fall in love with the delicious Gibson Boys.

Quesarasera Book Blog Review

4 Stars!!

While not my favorite of the Gibson Boys series, Crave was an emotional ride with a satisfying ending. This is a story of more than enough chances romance. Finally, they got it right!

Machlan Gibson is one frustrating hero. Like bang you head against a brick wall frustrating. He’s got issues stemming from his childhood and a pretty hue secret he and Hadley have been hiding. Hadley is good girl who is a glutton for punishment. Over the years she gave Machlan so many chances. She’s returned to Linton to finally decide what to do about Machlan, the boy she’s loved forever.

The dichotomy between Hadley and Machlan is complex and filed with a storied past. Locke doesn’t dwell too much on what happened in the past, but gives us just enough backstory to fill in the gaps and move the book along without those pesky flashbacks. (A big thank you for that, by the way)

All the Gibson Boys make an appearance along with the feisty Nana.

Lots of emotional angst in this one that will keep you turning page after page.

New Release ~ 4 Stars for Test by Cora Brent

Title: Test

Series: A Gentry Generations Story

Author: Cora Brent

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Release Date: September 27, 2018

He seems like nothing but arrogance with a beer in one hand and some clueless girl in the other. I can read Derek Gentry like he’s a neon sign that says ‘I AM A TERRIBLE IDEA.’

And I’m not tempted, no matter how hot he is.

I’ve heard the rumors. I know his story.

But I’ve got my own scars. I don’t need his.

Despite his muscled, blue-eyed Adonis kind of staggering good looks, he’s heartbreak wrapped in a seductive package.

However I never planned on falling into his arms on the worst night of my life.

I never planned on initiating a chain reaction of events that neither of us saw coming.

And I never planned on needing him so much I can hardly stand it.

Everyone has a history.

Mine’s a little worse than most.

I’ve hurt my family. I’ve hurt people I never knew. I’ve hurt myself.

And I’ve been hiding at the bottom of a bottle for so long I’m not sure how to do things differently.

Paige always struck me as the sort of uptight girl who would never give anyone a break. Little did I know what kind of mysteries she’s been keeping inside. Now I can’t get her out of my head.

We could help each other.

Or we could destroy each other.

Right now it’s anyone’s guess…

Quesarasera Book Blog Review

4 Stars!

The next member of the Gentry family, Derek, gets his HEA!

I really enjoyed this book. While this is a NA romance, it deals with some pretty heavy topics. However, Cora Brent does an amazing job with those topics. She does not sugar coat or romanticize addiction and self-harm, but she does not overpower the romantic nature of the book either. The underlying romance is really sweet. These two, slighty broken people share a traumatic experience and find comfort in each other after.

I appreciate that while Derek and Paige find comfort in each other that slowly becomes more, the book didn’t ignore or magically fix their issues. Derek’s issues with alcoholism provided conflict more than once and the reactions of his family were realistic and loving. I liked that Brent approached these topics without being preachy. However, Paige has her own issues and while they were discussed, there was less focus on her issue, which, in my opinion, is just as major as Derek’s and equally as important.

The best part of this book is the sweet romance between Derek and Paige that starts off as a slow simmer and builds until the very end. It progresses organically, for the most part. There is a slight bit of outside interference from Derek’s younger brother, Kellan. It was sweet and I was rooting so hard for these two.

A great addition to the Gentry family! Derek and Paige will steal your heart.

I flushed and tried to choke out a laugh. “It’s funny how I can’t seem to stop embarrassing myself in front of you.”

Derek shook his head like he thought I was being ridiculous. “Stop being embarrassed.”

He started moving the piles of cassettes over to the desk and then switched off the power button on the stereo. I had no idea why. Maybe he was just trying to help clean up. Then he got on the bed beside me, stretched out and extended his arm.

“Come here,” he whispered.

I obeyed. Slowly, because I wasn’t sure what he had in mind.

But Derek wasn’t after sex. He didn’t touch me while I got comfortable. Settling against his strong body seemed like the most natural act in the world. It didn’t feel dirty or even erotic. He switched off the bedside lamp, wrapped his arms around me and let me fall asleep with my cheek next to his beating heart.

And there I slept all night, more soundly than I thought possible…

Cora Brent was born in a cold climate and escaped as soon as it was legally possible. Now, she lives in the desert with her husband, two kids and a prickly pear cactus she has affectionately named ‘Spot’. Cora’s closet is filled with boxes of unfinished stories that date back her 1980’s childhood and all her life she has dreamed of being an author. Amazingly, she is now a New York Times and USA Today bestselling writer of contemporary romance and begs not to be awakened from this dream.

Blog Tour ~ 3.5 Stars for Dating the Enemy by Nicole Williams

AP new - synopsis.jpg

Ms. Romance, Hannah Arden, writes one of the top read relationship advice columns in the nation. Mr. Reality, Brooks North, writes the top read relationship advice column.

Ms. Romance believes in true love and soul mates. Mr. Reality believes love is a term humanity has assigned to the primal instinct to procreate. She believes in fate—he in chance. She knows there’s one right person for everyone—he knows there are multiple ones. The two writers couldn’t be more polarized on relationships. They’re professional rivals, and philosophical antagonists.

For eight years, their battles have been fought with words and ink. That changes when they apply for the same position at the World Times and find themselves face-to-face for the first time. Brooks isn’t the sour-faced, antiquity of a man Hannah pictured. And Hannah isn’t exactly the middle-aged shrew with cat hair on her housedress that Brooks imagined either.

In lieu of competing for the promotion traditional ways, the two writers are presented with playing the leading roles in a social experiment unlike any before. Can a person be tricked into falling in love? Can a relationship be crafted under the right string of circumstances? Hannah knows the answer. So does Brooks.

Agreeing to the terms, the two set out on a three-month dating experiment, live-streamed for the world to watch. All Hannah has to do to win is not fall in love with the narcissistic brute. All Brooks has to do is get the starry-eyed dreamer to fall in love with him. Both are so confident in their philosophies, they expect the challenge to be easy.

With the world watching, Brooks and Hannah will be forced to confront their beliefs and conclude, once and for all, who’s right. The answer is one neither of them saw coming.

Quesarasera Book Blog Review

3.5 Stars!

I enjoyed this book. Nicole Williams’s writing is always fun and she has a great knack for creating the perfect H and h. I enjoyed the enemies to lovers trope and the twisty little way Williams went about it was clever and fun. The acerbic banter between Brooks and Hannah was fun with a decidedly sexy undertone. The chemistry is steamy and the denial was a nice side dish. My complaint was that it took me a while to really get into the book. It picks up steam a little beyond half way but prior to that I often skimmed.

Overall a good read.

“Where do you think you’re going?”
I jolted. Brooks had an annoying talent of being able to appear out of thin air. “As far away from this dance floor as I can get.”
“But we haven’t danced yet.” Brooks crept in front of my path, forcing me to stop or crash into him.
Braking to a stop, I shot him a look. “I’ll be sure to shed some tears for that later. When I’m asleep.”
“Someone’s notably grumpier now than they were earlier.” His eyes narrowed in an investigative kind of way. “Methinks you weren’t totally forthcoming about you minding if I danced with other women.”
The cameraman was leaning in, our ever-present third wheel, but I didn’t feel the need to lower my voice. “Methinks you were onto something when you expressed trepidation over your manhood’s functioning properties after tonight.”
Brooks let out a low whistle. “Under the right circumstances, those words, from that mouth, would be such a turn-on.”
“The right circumstances being what? Your standing appointment with a dungeon and a dominatrix?”
One dark brow lifted. “Bad kitty.”
“No. Grumpy cat.” I circled my face before going around him.
His arm whipped out, cinching around my waist to draw me back to him. “Let’s see if I can help with that.” His hand found mine, lifting it, while his other secured at my back, bringing me closer. And closer.
And . . .
“Brooks,” I hissed, remembering the camera before I put into words what I’d just felt.
He didn’t appear the slightest bit fazed. “What was that about my functioning manhood?”
“I don’t want to feel it digging into my stomach when I’m trying to focus on tangoing.”
“Then you shouldn’t have worn that dress.”
“And we’ll lump that in the category known as victim-blaming,” I muttered, trying to ignore the hard swell rubbing against my midsection.
“It’s not your fault my dick has a thing for your dress.” Brooks didn’t lower his voice at all. “It’s his fault, one hundred and ten percent. Total case of dick-blaming right here.”

I wrote a note when I started reading this book that reads, “This starts off with a bang… literally. lol!” I am not kidding. I really does. I thought it was one of the best opening chapters I have read in a book. You’ll see what I mean.

After the first chapter, things slow down a bit as we are introduced to Delaney Kate and Reed. Honestly, Reed is a bit hard to love at first, but he will quickly grow on you once he gets over himself. Delaney Kate is a spitfire and so much fun to read. The secondary characters were perfect and the town is a character in and of itself. The story is endearing, two life long friends who had a falling out and are now reunited. Not a second chance romance, but more an eye-opening, come to Jesus realization of long-simmering feelings. Well, for one of them, at least.

This is a fun, entertaining read with laugh out loud moments and moments that bring out all the feels!

About the Author:

My name is Toni Aleo and I’m a total dork.
I am a wife, mother of two and a bulldog, and also a hopeless romantic.
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughter’s dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and reading the latest romance novel.
I have a slight Disney and Harry Potter obsession, I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, I might have been a Disney Princess in a past life… probably Belle.
… and did I mention I love hockey?
