THE DARKEST TORMENT Synopsis:

Can Beauty tame her Beast?

Driven to his death by the demon of Distrust, Baden spent centuries in purgatory. Now he’s back, but at what cost? Bound to the king of the underworld, an even darker force, he’s unable to withstand the touch of another…and he’s quickly devolving into a heartless assassin with an uncontrollable temper. Things only get worse when a mission goes awry and he finds himself saddled with a bride—just not his own.

Famed dog trainer Katarina Joelle is forced to marry a monster to protect her loved ones. When she’s taken hostage by the ruthless, beautiful Baden immediately after the ceremony, she’s plunged into a war between two evils—with a protector more dangerous than the monsters he hunts. They are meant to be enemies, but neither can resist the passion burning between them…and all too soon the biggest threat is to her heart.

But as Baden slips deeper into the abyss, she’ll have to teach him to love…or lose him forever.

EXCERPT:

Baden reached the keeper of Defeat’s door and knocked hard enough to crack the wood.

Note to self: Buy a new door.

“Coming, coming.” A patter of footsteps rang out and the door swung open, revealing Strider’s mate, Kaia. She greeted him with a dagger in hand, her mass of red hair anchored in pigtails, her eyes bright with fury.

She’s armed…a true threat. Kill her!

Baden did his best to ignore the beast, staring over Kaia’s shoulder. He scanned the room, checking for hidden threats out of habit. Well. Her decorating style could probably be classified as a hoarder died here. “Did you reach your sister?”

“Yep. She’ll meet you at Downfall in an hour.”

“Thank you.”

“Save your thanks and do me a favor.” She gave the hilt of her dagger a kiss. “Next time you’re with Hades, demand to know each of William’s hideouts.”

The urge to protect suddenly overwhelmed him. Protect William? Or Hades?

Both. Destruction snarled inside his head. They are mine, and I will annihilate anyone who even thinks to harm them.

His mouth watered. Her blood, I’ll taste it. His hands itched. Her bones, I’ll break them.

As a predator, Kaia sensed his intentions and reacted accordingly, crouching, readying for attack.

Rational thought intruded: No, no. Not her.

But Destruction had already pulled back his fist to strike. At the last second, Baden regained a semblance of control, raining the fury upon the wall with punches and kicks.

The beast roared as more and more of Baden’s friends sprinted from their rooms, grabbing hold of him to try to stop him.

They dare try to restrain me?

Again, the beast was able to overtake him, flinging one warrior after another across the hall.

He laughed.

“How do we corral him?” someone shouted.

“Keeley.” Torin’s voice poured over the intercom. “You’re needed in Strider’s room. ASAP.”

“No time. We need Katarina,” a female called. “She calms him, I think.”

A handful of warriors rushed him at once, tackling him to the floor, but again, flinging them away wasn’t difficult. Power expanded his limbs, reinforced his bones. He was able to work his way to his feet.

I might fall, but I’ll never stay down.

A grinning blond stepped into his path. The male named Strider. Killing him would be a pleasure.

Baden screamed at Destruction. He’s my friend. They all are!

“Hey! Over here.” One of the women said, “I’m going to rip you a new asshole—in your face.”

Not my friends, Destruction told Badenas he grabbed her by the neck and lifted her off her feet. Anya. Destruction had made of point of learning the identities of the residents. Know your enemy

“No!” Lucien shouted, tackling him from behind.

The goddess of Anarchy twined her legs around Destruction’s neck and, as he stumbled, squeezed with surprising strength.

From the corner of his eye, he spotted Katarina and the one named Ashlyn rounding the far corner. Both females stopped to gap at him. He paused, he wasn’t sure why, giving Baden the opportunity to regain a bit of control. Not enough to claim ownership of the body, but enough to slow him down as their wills clashed. He bellowed to the rafters.

“Run, Ash and take the girl with you,” Maddox demanded. “She’s only making him worse.”

Katarina…leave?

Baden and Destruction worked together to pull Anya off their shoulders and drop her. They sidestepped Lucien and stalked to the woman who’d haunted them. The woman who belonged to them. If only for a little while.

“Go!” multiple voices screamed at once. The warriors were giving chase, trying to beat him to the object of his fascination.

Ashlyn attempted to tug Katarina away, but Katarina shook off her hold and stepped forward. Toward him.

The moment she reached him, she framed his face with her delicate hands. He had to crouch to allow the action, which wasn’t exactly a prime position to mount a proper defense—butworth it.

“What’s wrong with you?” she asked.

He drew in a breath, his usually useless lungs suddenly infused by the sweetness of her scent…as if he were coming back to life. “They are threats.”

“Wrong. There are no threats here.”

“They are threats,” he insisted.

She brushed her thumbs over the rise of his cheeks, gentle, so gentle, and yet still the action stung. But he didn’t pull away. The air between them thickened and crackled with awareness. He liked it.

The others stopped their pursuit and maintained a proper distance, whispering with incredulity.

“Is this really happening or am I hallucinating?” someone asked.

“Does the human have a magic hoo-ha?”

“You have a job to do,” Katarina reminded him, ignoring the others. “Why don’t you go do it, and I’ll take care of the threats here?”

He snorted. “You’re not strong enough.”

That earned a raised brow. “So you’ve told me.”

“Dude. Isn’t she married?” Kaia asked.

He snarled at the Harpy, though his gaze remained on Katarina. She’d lost weight and looked more fragile than ever, and yet her beauty took his breath away.

Breath he now needed to survive?

“Baden,” she said.

“Destruction,” he corrected.

“Since he’s affected by you, I’m willing to bet you’re affected by him. Why don’t I call you Baduction?” She smiled at him, inviting him to play with her. “And a hat tip to you. If your newest job is to stare at me, you’ve got it nailed.”

He didn’t know how to play, but he liked seeing her like this. Happy rather than despondent.

He shouldn’t care what she felt. Caring left him vulnerable.

He scowled at her. “Stay out of trouble today.”

“I will, but not because you ordered it. Because I’m a girl and girls are made of—”

“Sugar and spice,” he interjected, remembering the rhyme. Boys were made of snakes and snails.

“Wrong. Girls are made of vodka and ice. The two combined increase our tolerance for masculine nonsense.”

Genres: Fantasy, New Adult, Romance

Athena Harrow is about to turn twenty-one, but there will be no celebration. What is there to celebrate when the world is ruled by demons?

She hates the darkness the demons brought with them and longs for the light to return to the world—a world she only vaguely remembers. The people in her forest village blindly accept the life the demons forced upon them, even tolerating the yearly ascension ceremony where all the girls who have turned twenty-one are either sent away to serve the Master Demon or left in the village and forced to procreate.

But Paymon, the assigned village demon, selects a different role for Athena, a role that pits her against the village. While she adapts to her new life, Erebus, a younger, more powerful demon, arrives, and Athena must play a dangerous game with his emotions in return for information about the demon’s reign of darkness.

As Athena’s dreams of restoring the light begin to fade, her life with Erebus takes an unexpected turn, and this time it’s her life being put to the test.

Set in the forest around Buttercrambe in North Yorkshire, England, INIQUITY explores the frightening, darker side of romance and the uncontrolled emotions it can unleash.

EXCERPT

“Erebus?” Livia’s voice was sweet and soft, nothing like the tone she’d directed at me.

“I believe that’s my name,” he said, sharp and concise.

“To what do I owe this pleasure of your visit?” Livia sounded as if she were singing. “You have no need to be in this disgusting village with all these peasants.”

The man sniggered. “I have every right to be here. But you? You have no right to be anywhere near this village. Not unless I send for you.”

“You’ve been given this village? Since when?”

“I was summoned several hours ago when Paymon died. I’ve been travelling constantly. Seems I got here just in time.”

A breeze brushed against my skin and a raven cawed overhead.

“Call that filthy beast off that woman,” the man said. “If you have no need to be here, it certainly doesn’t.”

“Lanim,” Livia snapped. “Back to the carriage without the girl. It seems Erebus wants to save her.”

There was a creak of movement, and the sickly aroma surrounding me lost intensity.

When moans and wails filled the air, I knew the miscreant was returning to the carriage, but the frightening blindness didn’t leave me. My hands and feet tingled as some feeling began to return to them, but the little strength I had in my legs wasn’t enough to prevent me from falling to the ground. I landed on my side and was unable to find the strength to sit. Footsteps approached. After a rustle of clothing, I was pulled against warmth.

“Athena, can you hear me?” It was Thomas, his voice strained, breaking.

I nodded. As the oppressive cold snaked away from my limbs, every muscle hurt, throbbing with a dull numbness. But it felt good to be in Thomas’s arms. He was warm and familiar.

The darkness that had surrounded me clouded and then dispersed, and I focused on the man who had arrived. He was seated on a large black stallion, but his facial features were hidden by the hood of his cloak. When he dismounted his horse, his cloak swirled behind him in an elegant flourish.

He prowled toward Livia. “So, you didn’t explain. Why are you here with the carriage? Has this woman done something to upset you?”

I drew in a sharp intake of breath and placed my hand over my chest as he pulled the hood of his cloak way from his face. He was young, much younger than Paymon. He had stubble, and where the beginnings of a beard ended, streaks of dirt were smudged across his face. The dark shadows beneath his eyes hinted at his tiredness and possible frustration. A deep scowl pulled across his forehead, and Livia backed away from him.

“Such a pity I can’t feed from your emotions, Livia. I’d be having my own private party if that were the case. But I can sense your fear—it’s quite disturbing, but also deeply satisfying. Something worrying you?” His brow lifted, and he shot a sideways glance at me. “And you. Paymon’s wife, I suspect? About to be claimed by the miscreant.”

“She killed Paymon.” Livia pointed at me, her hand movement wide and exaggerated.

“I didn’t!” I stood on shaking legs as Thomas held my arm, supporting my dizzy body. “He died in my arms. I never wanted him dead.”

“You killed him!” she roared.

Erebus spun to face Livia, and she immediately froze in place, like the statues that the girls had been when the carriage last came. He walked to where I stood, his steps slow and predatory.

Thomas backed away, leaving me alone. I glanced quickly at him, shooting him a disgusted frown.

Erebus scanned my bloodied and ripped dress. “So you didn’t kill him?”

I shook my head.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded.

Now he was next to me I could see his eyes. They were black, no doubt feeding from my racing emotions. His dark hair was tied away from his face, and he stood a head taller than me. He was also dressed similarly to Paymon, old-world clothes, but his were worn with the simple adornment of belts.

“You can speak, you know. Livia will stay where she is. I’ve compelled her.” He leaned toward me and whispered, “I hate vampires.”

Staggering down the hallway, she didn’t even look up when she heard her name.

“Hmm?” she asked.

“Cyrene, there you are!”

Someone grabbed her shoulders, and she tipped her head to look up into the most beautiful face. She smiled and felt a renewed burst of energy flow through her.

“Hey,” she whispered.

“Hey,” he said, threading his fingers through hers. A shiver ran up her back. He glanced around the empty hallway and then tugged her away from the main corridors. She turned a corner, and he pressed her back into a darkened alcove. His mouth was only inches from hers.

Her exhaustion was wearing off from the excitement of being with him.

“I was really worried about you,” he breathed.

“You don’t have to worry about me,” she said, trapped in his gaze. She teetered on her tiptoes and nearly brushed their lips together. Her heart was racing ahead of her. This felt almost better than reaching for her magic. Definitely better than moving one drop of water at a time all day.

“You’re wrong.” Then, he softly dropped his mouth down on hers. His lips were tender and slow as they caressed hers. “I will always worry for your safety.”

Cyrene’s cheeks heated, and she sighed, leaning back against the hard stone of the alcove. “I didn’t mean to worry you.”

His hands pushed up through her hair and tilted her head back up to look at him. She closed her eyes and sighed. She was so tired, and just the feel of his fingers was lulling her to sleep.

“That feels good.”

His mouth found hers, and despite her exhaustion, she pushed back against his lips with more force. She refused to let the fact that she was tired get in the way of her time with him.

“Whoa,” he said, pulling back from her. He rested his forehead against hers, and she could tell he was breathing heavily. “As much as I want this, and I do, I want to make sure you’re okay. This didn’t scare you away?”

She shook her head. “This, most certainly, does not scare me.” Then, she kissed him again for good measure.

He laughed. “Good. Because I’ve been wanting to kiss you since I first met you.”

“You have not!” she insisted.

“Are you kidding? A gorgeous, feisty woman who wasn’t afraid to put me in my place the first time she met me? I mostly certainly have.”

New Release!  Decisions of the Heart by Jessica Florence is now available!

Title: Decisions of the Heart
Series: Of the Heart #2
Author: Jessica Florence
Release Date: Oct 19, 2016

Tristan is on the hunt to save his love, and he will destroy all of existence to find her.

Thalia was taken from him, and forced to remember everything from their past life.

Now on a race against time, he has to find her before the pain from her memories flooding her at an unnatural pace will cause damage.

He has waited over two millennia to be reunited with her, and he isn’t going to let anything stop him.

Not even her own mind.

Their path has been filled with love, tears, and death.

But the journey is far from over.

I rested in the water while my mind turned towards Anubis. I wondered how he was doing. It was only early morning when I last saw him, but I missed his smile. I hoped I would see him tonight. I knew he was an important person and I couldn’t be selfish. But when he wasn’t with me it felt like my soul was incomplete. When we were together it was a strong pull to be with each other; we were one soul.

“Miss me?” His voice scared me, making me jump in the water. He was standing in the corner with that mysterious smile I loved so much.

“Yes,” I answered without hesitation. I was happy he came. He must have felt my desire to see him.

“What were you longing for earlier?” I looked at him, confusion written on my face.

“Your soul longed to be somewhere.” It took me some time, but I figured out what he was asking me.

“I miss my home. I wanted to lie in the wheat fields and watch the clouds.” His smile faltered, had I upset him in some way? I wanted to comfort him.

“It’s nothing you did, Thalia. I want to give you the world. I’m not allowed to do that, but if I could, we would be there now, and I would lie with you.”  What did he mean he wasn’t allowed? He was a god.

“What do you mean?” I asked softly.

“Our religions don’t mix. Your gods would not take it too kindly if a god from another was in their land. And the same from our side. Your Alexander is creating quite a stir between the two trying to blend Egyptian and Greek.” My mind was trying to understand what he was telling me. Sides? It dawned on me and I was shocked I hadn’t realized it sooner.

“I should have realized it. If you’re real, of course ours are real. Oh no, how can we be together? You will have problems forced on you because of being with me, a Greek mortal.” My head lowered in sadness. I didn’t think I could ever love anyone but him, but he was not to love a Greek. The touch of his fingers under my chin lifted my gaze to his.

“I would take every punishment as long as I could be with you, and I will fight anyone who would try to take you from me. No Greek, nor Egyptian will keep me away.” His vow was stern. I wouldn’t cross him. He radiated immense power. My fingers lifted to touch him, to feel him. His eyes softened; he leaned down, getting rid of the space between us. When our lips met, my whole body felt his power, and the feeling of my love for him flowed through me. In the short time we had known each other he had become my world. I would do anything for him. Our kiss was strong, but brief. I wanted to explore his body more. I wanted more of the pleasure he could give me. My body craved his like the sweetest morsel. He growled as his lips lightly brushed against mine.

“Insatiable,” he whispered.

EXCERPT:

There was no moving in this moment. Her body afforded her no such luxury, as swirling white mist covered the soft green grass, giving the world an ethereal appearance. Crimson danced against the golden sky as the evening moved in quickly, hoping to make way for its dark lover.

Sam gazed around her, trying to make sense of the familiarity she felt with her setting, but she failed to hold onto the fleeting memory. The soft crunch of grass moving changed everything as realization dawned—she was no longer alone.

Her dark sapphire eyes narrowed, brow creasing as a figure cut through the dense, chalky air. He towered over her by a head or two, and judging by the large expanse of his shoulders, he often left the gym stained in his scent. As his shape continued to gain clarity, from color and size to the defined lines of a life well lived, the swell of anticipation grew within her at the story his facial features might tell.

As he drew close enough for focus, her jaw slackened and her eyes widened with wonder. He was for all intents and purposes a teenager, and yet by his exotic appearance, she guessed him to be a foreigner. Wherever he was from, he was simply beautiful.

He stopped just before her, his gaze locked on hers, and try though she may words escaped her cry for assistance. His piercing jade eyes bore into her, dark orange rays stretching lazily from the iris, his skin seeming to glitter as if kissed by the sun.

“I’ve been waiting for you.”

“For me?” Sam blinked in surprise, taking a hesitant step back.

“Ah, Samantha,” he breathed out, his brow creasing ever so slightly. “Same questions every time, my love. Shall I give you the same answers?”

“W-what a-answers?” She shook her head, attempting to draw in a breath that wasn’t filled with the smell of pure male.

There would be no relaxing in front of him for something was so very familiar and yet alarming to all of her protective senses. Brick by brick, her heart constructed a thick wall that would promise protection. He took a step forward and reached for her hand, but was a bit too late to infiltrate her senses as the wall was up and impenetrable.

She exhaled softly as their skin connected and instinctively let her fingers wrap around his as a sign of friendship. The warmth of his touch sent tingles racing along the corridors of her body and yet still the cold loneliness remained because she demanded it so. No one would ever penetrate her defenses again. Self-preservation had become her lifelong companion simply because life required such company.

3.75 stars for Fierce Player (Sierra Pride #4) by Liza Street

fierce-player

Title:  Fierce Player

Series:  Sierra Pride Book #4

Author:  Liza Street

Genre:  Fantasy, Romance

Publication Date:  August 3, 2016

Synopsis:  Kate Ahrens has a problem—she keeps imagining creepy men following her while she walks to and from her college campus. It’s the result of too much time spent developing games, and not enough time talking to actual people. But when she meets the hot librarian with amazing eyes, she starts to think maybe she just hadn’t found the right person to talk to.

As the fourth brother in the shapeshifting Sierra Pride, Maverick Fournier isn’t intimidated by much. Kate, though, with her hot pink hair and sexy piercings, makes him completely lose his cool. He wants to protect her, smell her, and mate her—maybe not in that order. Unfortunately, there are some other men interested in Kate, and their interest isn’t at all romantic. Even though protecting her means revealing his animal side, Maverick is determined to keep her safe and win her love.

Content warning: This sexy shapeshifter novelette includes a happily-ever-after, as well as explicit love scenes and naughty language. It is intended for adults. The ending leads into the next book (Fierce Dancer, out in September 2016), but the main story line is resolved and this can be read as a stand-alone.

14,500 words, 60 pages.

My Review:

3.75/5 Stars!

Fierce Player is a short read, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Kate is a fiercely independent woman who drives shapeshifter Man crazy.  He wants everything with her and when she is stalked by some bad guys, he jumps in to protect her despite having to show her his secret.

Despite the short length, this novelette is packed full of story.  It is naughty, sexy and sweet with a little bit of danger and an awesome HEA!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

The fate of humanity hangs in the balance as Aidan faces a crushing choice: give in to the demands of the forces of Darkness in order to save his sister, Ava, or fight on the side of good and risk losing her forever. With so much at stake and so little time, Aidan embarks on a mission to finish assembling a team of “Lights,” other teens whose special abilities are linked to his own.

Meanwhile, Rebecca discovers that she’s more than just a normal teen, and that the power awakening inside her may be stronger than she ever could have imagined. As the city plunges into chaos and Aidan doubts his plan of attack, Rebecca’s newfound gift may tip the balance in the wrong direction.

In this thrilling final installment of The Dark Cycle trilogy, will Aidan find the help he needs to release the world from Darkness’s grip? Or will he lose everything he’s been desperately trying to save, including his soul?  Goodreads / Amazon
