3.5 Star Review of Wicked Need by Sawyer Bennett

Wicked Need (The Wicked Horse Series # 3)
Author: Sawyer Bennett
Publication Date: April 19, 2016
Genre: Adult Contemporary Romance, Erotica

Rand Bishop’s dreams of Olympic gold were shattered years ago but he’s left that all behind, settling into a new career and lifestyle that would make any man jealous. While he may not be competitively racing down the ski slopes anymore, he’s just as happy getting his rocks off as a Fantasy Maker for The Silo.

He’s good at what he does.
Damn good.

But while life couldn’t be better for Rand, it seems to be falling apart for Catherine Lyons Vaughn, the dark haired, brown-eyed beauty that has captivated an entire sex club.

Having spent years degrading herself on her husband’s whim and now left destitute after his death, Catherine has hit rock bottom. With nothing but her body to peddle, Catherine is merely trying to figure out how to survive in a harsh, cruel world. Lucky for her, Rand has taken her under his tattooed wing, and he’s determined to give her a safe life where she can be the woman she was always meant to be.

Now all Catherine has to do is believe she deserves the chance.
My Review:

Rating: 3.5 stars

Wicked Need is book 3 in The Wicked Horse Series and I want to say I liked it as much as the first two, but, unfortunately, I didn’t. It isn’t that the book isn’t good. It’s what I have come to expect from Sawyer Bennett, who ranks up there on my list of favorite authors. The problem was it was a bit bland compares to the previous two books.

Wicked Need is Rand’s story. Well, his and Catherine’s. Both characters have appeared in the previous two books. I liked that we got to know Catherine, or now Cat, better. She’s actually a pretty great character. Unfortunately, Rand didn’t do it for me. I get that he is different from the guys in the other books, but I never felt like I got enough of him to really connect with his character. Honestly, this should have been subtitled Catherine’s Story, not Rand’s Story.

Anyway, the writing is good, not Bennet’s best, but still good. The plot was interesting, the story was predictable but good. I guess I was just wishing for a little more.

Still worth a read, though.

5 Stars for Weightless by Kandi Stein (Releasing June 16, 2016)

Author:  Kandi Steiner

Publication Date:  June 16, 2016

Genre:  Coming of Age

I remember the lights.

I remember I wanted to photograph them, the way the red and blue splashed across his cold, emotionless face. But I knew even if my feet could move from the place where they had cemented themselves to the ground and I could run for my camera, I wouldn’t be able to capture that moment.

I had trusted him, I had loved him, and even though my body had changed that summer, he’d made sure to help me hold on to who I was inside, regardless of how the exterior altered.

But then everything changed.

He stole my innocence. He scarred my heart. He took everything I thought I knew about my life and fast-pitched it out the window, shattering the glass that held my world together in the process.

I remember the lights.

The passionate, desperate, hot strikes of red. The harsh, cruel, icy bolts of blue.

They symbolized everything I endured that summer.

And everything I would never face again.

My Review:

Rating:  five stars

I received the ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I don’t even know where to start, that is how good this book is.  It is in my top 3 of 2016!

I am going to be careful not to give anything away because I don’t want to ruin any of the beauty that is this book or take away from your experience of reading Weightless.  It was that good.  Seriously.

I read the synopsis and was immediately intrigued.  I thought for sure I knew what was going on.  I like to think I have this special power that lets me figure out all the twists and turns before they happen.  It’s a blessing and a curse.  I thought right away I knew how this was going to end, which caused me all kinds of anxiety and stress, but I was wrong.  I was so wrong.  I was so wrong, that I couldn’t put the book down until I figured it all out.

Natalie is like all of my insecurities wrapped up in a sweet, well-versed character who portrays those insecurities on the pages of this book in such a perfect way.  The character of Natalie is beyond likeable.  She is every one of us.  Reading her journey of self-discovery was beautiful and satisfying.

Rhodes, the hero, is rough around the edges, gruff, misunderstood and, of course, hot.  But, his rawness is what makes him such a powerful character.

I literally couldn’t put this book down.  I picked it up, started reading and the next thing I knew it was the middle of the night.  I had to keep reading until I found just the right stopping point so I could get some sleep before picking it up the next morning.  You’ve been warned.   😉

Weightless has all the feels, sweet romance, a little steaminess and a dash of mystery and danger that come together to make a perfect recipe of delicious book goodness.

Weightless releases on June 16, 2016 , but you can preorder now for just $0.99 on Amazon .  It will also be available on Kindle Unlimited.

A small crowd of men wearing gun holsters ran past Josie and Alex, followed by three uniformed TSA agents.

“I wonder what that’s about?” Alex marveled, his eyes tracking the fracas. He and Josie had come to the Portland, Maine airport to pick up her mother, Marlene, and Aunt Cathy, Uncle Mike and her new Uncle Calvin. All the Ohio relatives were here for her and Alex’s wedding.

A cold wave of dread washed over her. They were running toward the baggage claim for the airline her entire family was on.

“I’ll bet it’s my mother,” she groaned, leaning against him for support. His strong arm wrapped around her shoulders and gave her the comfort she needed. Too bad he couldn’t give her a second backbone made of steel.

If he could, she knew, he would. The thought made her smile.

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” he said, giving her a squeeze. She looked up at him. Way up, given the enormous height difference between the two of them. His warm, brown eyes met hers and for an instant, she wondered if he might be right. That eternally positive outlook he had was a bit infectious.

Maybe she needed to stop assuming the worst of every situation.

A rotund security guard huffed and puffed, running past them, holding what looked like a spare uniform. He was talking into a walkie-talkie.

“Naked?” Huff huff. “She’s naked? What size?” Huff huff.

Alex’s kind eyes filled with alarm. It was both charming and horrifying. Josie couldn’t quite decide which impression she enjoyed more. There was a kind of schadenfreude in realizing she was right. His idealism was sweet, but sometimes she needed him to be more of a realist.

And Marlene served up an entire buffet of realism.

“Mile High Club again?” the guard asked, pausing to catch his breath. Josie watched him with a morbid fascination.

“You don’t really think it’s your mom in there, Josie,” Alex said. He caressed her shoulder absent-mindedly, watching the guard. “I mean—”

“Two men in one bathroom with a naked woman?” the guard barked into his walkie-talkie, eyebrows hitting the brim of his hat.

Josie snorted, the sense of dread spreading.

“How could it be anyone else?”

“That sounds more like something Darla would do,” Alex said. “You sure she’s still in Boston and not on this flight?”

Just as Josie was about to reply, the commotion got louder.

“MARLENE!” Josie heard the sense of outrage in her Aunt Cathy’s voice. The airport was small, but not that small. Cathy’s voice could carry. “WHAT IN THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR CLOTHES?”

Jessica Frances
Publication date: January 26th 2016
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult

I was raised in a world where humans no longer rule.

In the past, we made a terrible mistake by creating a new species we thought would serve us as our army, which led to our downfall.

There was a war, we lost, and many lives were massacred. It was the end of life as we knew it and the beginning of a hell we were now trapped in. We became enslaved to what we now called Superiors, becoming pets to them, simply there to entertain.

In a world so miserable, I managed to do the unthinkable: I fell in love. But even that was doomed, because to love a Superior was forbidden.

What the rest of the Superiors didn’t know was how deeply a human could love or how resilient we became when we were hurt.

The Superiors never could have imagined an uprising, which was why they never saw it coming.

Humans deserved to be free, and I would stop at nothing to deliver that promise.

My name is Tilly, and I am still alive with one sole purpose: to begin a revolution.

I had been raised to believe humans were worthless. We owned them and controlled them, and when we were done with them, we threw them away. Therefore, I never thought I would ever feel more for Tilly than disinterest. I never expected to want to save her.

It was forbidden for a Superior to love a human. No one had ever crossed that line, but I did. I fell madly in love with her, so it was no surprise how we ended up.

I was raised to be a soldier, and that was what I was always going to be. However, I was not a soldier for the Superiors, not anymore.

I became a soldier for humans, and I would stop at nothing to help them. They deserved to be free, and I would die protecting them.

My name is Johnny, and I am here with one sole purpose: to finish a revolution.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble

“How can you do that to these humans? This is beyond cruel!” I demand of her, not as afraid of her as I am of Jax.

She saunters over to me, her expression one of someone feeling carefree. “Many reasons, one being I make a lot of money doing this. Another is it is great entertainment.” She shrugs. “You humans are beneath us. I think it is disgusting that you are allowed into Superiors’ homes. You deserve to be in cages and in gutters. You are genetic mistakes that I would love to completely wipe out.”

“You wouldn’t even exist without us!” I yell, angry at her words.

“You humans stupidly created a species superior to you in every way, and then you tried to exterminate us when you realized you were no longer at the top of the food chain. You failed, and now you are forever destined be our slaves, our pets, our playthings. You are weak, disgusting, disease-ridden beings who deserve every ounce of pain I give you.”

Without warning, she shoves one of the sticks at me, zapping me with an electric shock powerful enough to send pain coursing through my entire body, forcing me against the back of the cage.

I scream, shocked and scared at how painful the experience is.

She doesn’t stop, and I swear my heart gives out. But then she pulls back, her laughter slowly filtering through my ears as I begin to calm down.

“Pathetic,” she mutters to me, turning around and moving past the cages, randomly choosing humans to zap.

Synopsis: A new adult romance from Entangled’s Embrace imprint…
There are some debts you can’t repay…
Josh Walker is loyal, reckless, and every girl’s dream. But he only has eyes for December Howard, the girl he has yearned for since his high school hockey days. Together they have survived grief, the military, distance, and time as they’ve fought for stolen weekends between his post at Ft. Rucker and her schooling at Vanderbilt. Now that Josh is a medevac pilot and Ember is headed toward graduation, they’re moving on—and in—together.
Ember never wanted the Army life, but loving Josh means accepting whatever the army dictates—even when that means saying goodbye as Josh heads to Afghanistan, a country that nearly killed him once before and that took her father. But filling their last days together with love, passion, and plans for their future doesn’t temper Ember’s fear, and if there’s one thing she’s learned from her father’s death, it’s that there are some obstacles even love can’t conquer.
Flight school is over.
This is war.

Review: Hallowed Ground is a beautiful, romantic and perfect end to the Flight & Glory series.

I loved this book from start to finish. Ember and Josh were first introduced in book one and it was a beautiful story, as well. You don’t have to read the other books in the series, because Hallowed Ground does give you enough of the back story though, so you don’t go into the book completely lost. However, this is such a great series and each book is intertwined, I would highly recommend reading all of them.

Ember and Josh have been through a lot and Ember is not thrilled about being a part of the military life anymore, but she loves Josh and accepts him for him and that life goes along with him. When Josh gets his orders, Ember hides her fears that he won’t return and Josh encourages Ember to follow her dreams, because he fears not returning either. The time before he leaves had me blubbering. Their relationship is threatened in more ways than one and there were times I was just sure they weren’t going to make it.
There are so many emotional ups and downs. Make sure you have your tissues handy. You’re going to need them.
Rebecca Yarros wrote a fantastic ending to one of my favorite series. I highly recommend reading the entire series, but this one is by far my favorite.

Jason Marshall needs a maid. His cabin and his eating habits have been declining recently, though, to be fair, they have always been in a slippery slope. Being out o the public’s eye for the past five years has given him time to remember why he started rapping in the first place and work on his fourth studio album. If he can get one person to give him a chance, he knows others will, too.

In this modern retelling of a classic fairytale, Emmy will learn that beasts can be beautiful, love can be dark, and attraction can be deadly.

Read Chapter 1:

The first thought Emmy Atler had upon seeing him was how someone so beautiful could kill his wife and her lover. Because Jason Marshall was beautiful; any woman (and even some men) who could see (and anyone who could not see most certainly could feel) his beauty. While he was relatively short for a male, standing at five foot ten, he had incredibly angular features. His face was heart-shaped, with high cheekbones. His eyes were dark, deep, and soulful, hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses. Emmy made sure to note not to stare into those eyes in fear that she might lose a piece of her in them. His lips looked soft and shapely, his top lip only slightly smaller than his bottom lip. Oddly enough, it was Mr. Marshall’s nose that Emmy was fascinated with the most; it was pointed and defined, the nostrils flaring out almost like the wings of a bird. His hair was dark and shaggy, constantly falling into his face on its own accord. It was longer than normal, coming down to about his chin. His shoulders were broad, hidden by an old, tattered robe. Emmy noticed that for a man of thirty-eight, his body was still in good shape as evidenced by his clinging muscle shirt and loose pajama pants.

“I’m here to answer the ad,” she said, mentally scolding herself for how small her voice sounded. Emmy was usually more forthcoming; she wasn’t used to being intimidated by anybody.

However, Emmy was beginning to expect that Jason Marshall was a different man entirely. He had begun to develop a well-known reputation as an esteemed author after he published his first book. The man was talented, and because of that, he started making money. As always, however, night did accompany day. Jason began holing up in his home office, plagued with deadlines, appearances, and writer’s block. The papers interpreted his isolation as a strain on his marriage and even managed to uncover his wife’s secret, seven-month affair. Jason had to discover it in the papers. Next thing he knew, his wife and her lover ended up dead in a Motel 6 and he was being accused of committing the act. Two years later and after clearing his name, he took residence in his old cabin in Lake Tahoe. He was also a rapper, something Emmy was much less familiar with, publishing three platinum albums on top of his writing career. He did not tour, and performed only rarely. From what she knew of his music career – which wasn’t much to begin with – he was an amazing rapper.

He smiled at her, causing Emmy to look away. The sun seemed to shine differently when he smiled.

“You seem to be the only one to do so,” he told her in a soft-spoken voice. Emmy had seen Jason being interviewed on television a few months back, and she found it rather baffling that the man had a voice that sounded articulate and mumbled at the same time. It was a low tenor and gave her chills; she hoped it was because she was intimidated by him.

“I guess that means that you’re hired,” he continued, opening the door wider – a silent invitation to come in.

She hesitated, and glanced at her two suitcases idly on the cement porch on either side of her. It had been rather presumptuous of her to assume that she would get this job, but she highly doubted that anyone else would be applying, and upon seeing his surprised look when he first saw her, she assumed that he felt the same way.

As Emmy stepped over the threshold that would mark the beginning of the end for her, she began to reflect on why she had decided to take the cleared murderer up on his job offer. Her grandfather was a wounded war veteran who barely managed to make ends meet with merely his disability check. He was the only thing Emmy had in the world and she loved him more than anything. She was currently a senior in college, about to graduate, but instead of finishing at the moment, she saw this opportunity to help him out and decided to take it. This, of course, was against her grandfather’s strictest wishes. It broke her heart that she had to leave him, but the pay was good, and they needed it.

“Well, I assume you want the tour then,” he said, glancing at the ground as he scratched the back of his neck.

“Actually, could you just show me to my room?” she asked. Even Emmy could admit that she sounded rather forceful and she quickly looked away to avoid that penetrating stare of his.

Jason paused for a beat as he stared at her intensely, before he nodded once. This caused his hair to fall in his face and his hand reached up, his long fingers pushing the locks out of his face; a chain of events that Emmy expected to happen quite often.

“Uh… yeah,” he said, and then began to lead her through the unkempt living room up to the base of the stairs.

Emmy watched his movements with interested curiosity. They were swift and fluid, however somewhat ungraceful as well. She noticed a rather large hole in the train of his robe, which was flittering behind the man in hopes to keep up with him. To be honest, Emmy was somewhat surprised that she was carrying both of her suitcases. She had been raised by a man who had lived in the time where chivalry was an unwritten rule, and expected the men of today to have some form of familiarity with etiquette, despite it being practically extinct.

As though Jason Marshall could read her mind, he stopped abruptly and spun around, causing his hair to curtain his face once again. Emmy had to strain her muscles to stop so that she would not run into him.

“I apologize,” he said, after brushing his hair back. “I seem to have forgotten my manners.” He looked at her bags before meeting her eyes. “May I?” he asked, raising his firm brow.

Emmy’s face betrayed her thoughts by turning an unattractive shade of red. Deciding not to trust her voice, she nodded and handed him her bags. Emmy made it a point to avoid accidentally touching him, and once the two bags were in his hands, she mumbled a meek word of thanks. The corner of his lips curled up in response and again, he nodded, before turning and finally ascending the narrow staircase.

Without further ado…Blaire Edens!!

Blaire Edens author photo

Welcome, Blaire. Tell us three interesting facts about yourself that you want readers to know.

Thanks for having me. I’m thrilled to be here!

Fair warning:  I’m a little quirky. J

-I’m a voracious knitter. Not only do I knit up a storm, but I occasionally teach knitting classes, usually ones on how to make socks or complicated lace shawls. The more complicated the pattern is, the more excited I am about giving it a try. While I’m writing, I keep my knitting on the desk beside me. When I get to a difficult scene or I can’t seem to get something to work out, I pick up my knitting, crank out a few rows and it usually solves the problem for me.

-I’m a college football FANATIC. I have season tickets to my alma mater, Clemson University. Go Tigers! During the football season, I watch several games a week. Maybe more than several. I love the strategy that’s involved and the football pants aren’t bad either.

-I have an issue with mixed foods. Yep. You read that right. I like chocolate sans mint or peanut butter and apples without cinnamon. My coffee must be black and please, please, don’t ask me to mix ketchup and mustard. Blech. The simpler, the better. I have no idea why I’m like this. Everyone else in my family is fine with mixed foods.

I loved Coach Maddie & the Marine.  Please tell us a little bit about your book?

Thanks! I loved writing it. Being from a military family, writing it was a little like going home and it was fun to be back inside the culture of a large base like Fort Wilson.

I love the theme of working outside of your comfort zone in order to build self-confidence and a sense of competence. In this book, Maddie is looking after her nephew while her sister is deployed. Not only does she have to learn how to be a surrogate mom, she has to learn to be a football coach. In her determination, she evolves and learns to see herself in a new light.

David, my Marine hero, is deeply scarred by the loss of Maddie’s late husband, Frank. He was with him when he died and David can’t stop believing he is responsible.  He must learn to get over his guilt and himself in order to build a new life.
Coach Maddie and the Marine is about second chances and learning to rebuild lives after they’ve been impacted by grief. I hope it’s a universal story that readers can relate to.

The book deals with some tough topics.  Was there any particular inspiration behind this book?

Grief is something most of us can relate to in one way or another. While I had the idea of Maddie and the football element for a long time, when I heard about the death of one of my college classmates, who was a Marine, the story came together for me and I was able to better access the emotions associated with a combat death. My friend, Andy, who was killed in Al Anbar Province, could have become an officer in the USMC but instead he chose to enlist. His death really hit home for me and in many ways, he was in the inspiration for the plot. Another one of my dear friends, a career marine, who witnessed more than his share of combat in the war on terror, inspired David in many ways. Being the man left behind has its own set of challenges and it was wonderful to have real-life sources.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?  If you weren’t a writer, what other profession would you like to be in?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. While I’ve done lots of other jobs in my quest to make it as a full-time writer, creating new stories drives me and I can’t imagine giving it up. For me, writing is a way of understanding everything that’s going on around me. By filtering things through characters, I can get a better handle on what drives us as humans.

If I had to pick another profession, I’d probably teach Latin. Told you I was quirky.

Coach Maddie and the Marine by Blaire Edens

Release Date: January 11, 2016

About the Book:

After the combat death of her Marine husband, grief counselor Maddie Westerfield has thrown herself into helping other families—leaving no time for dating. Which is just fine with Maddie since falling in love again, especially with another man in uniform, is out of the question. No matter how gorgeous he is. Plus, she’s busy looking after her eight-year-old nephew for her deployed sister.

For the last eight years, Lieutenant David Sterling has lived with the guilt of losing one of his soldiers in an ambush in Afghanistan. So when the opportunity presents itself, he jumps at the chance to help the beautiful widow coach her nephew’s football team. But keeping things strictly professional between them is harder than he expected. And even though he knows a relationship with Maddie will only lead to heartbreak, he can’t help falling for her.

First of all, let me start out by saying this book is filled with all kinds of feels.  David is absolutely swoonworthy and Maddie is kind of an inspiration.  I mean really.  She herself is dealing with so much loss and grief and instead of letting all that takeover, she lets it become a part of her that she uses her experience to help other.  David has also lost someone.  Now only does he feel grief over the loss, he is also dealing with some major guilt.

When David and Maddie meet sparks fly, but she doesn’t think she can survive another romance with a man in uniform.  David can’t deny his attraction, but he knows things have to remain professional.  They try to deny it, but their connection is inevitable.

Blair Edens has quite a way with words.  I got lost in this book and fell into David and Maddie’s world.  I laughed, I cried and I rooted for them.

This is a 5 star read that needs to find a way to your bookshelf or e-reader list ASAP!

Author Bio

B.B., also known as Bebe, found her passion for romance when she read her first romance novel by Susan Johnson at a young age. She would sneak into her mother’s closet for books and even sometimes the attic. It soon became a hobby, and later an addiction, influencing her life in a positive way.

Bebe has always wondered about the existence of her talent. When she finally decided to pick up a metaphorical pen and start writing, she found a new way to embrace her passion.

She favors a romance that isn’t always easy on the eyes or heart, and loves to see characters grow–characters who are seemingly doomed from the start but find love anyway.
